Not real sure what to think of it. I enjoyed it, but the VIPs were so freaking cheesy. I mean just outright terrible and distracting.

The old guy twist at the end was kinda dumb too. One of the only endearing characters and you did that.

Season 2 could be interesting with a deeper dive into the workers.
One thing to remember about the VIPs, as awful as they were, was that this was filmed during the pandemic and unless there was someone at our army base in Seoul that also moonlighted as a voice actor, the pickin's for American/Western voice actors in South Korea at the time had to have been pretty slim.

I get that… but then why do they have to be Americans? I mean, I get that it's a commentary on western capitalism, but they could have been wealthy Koreans as well. And would have had the same impact, I think.

Having Western English speakers is just part of the formula for many of the K-Dramas/Shows. A part of me wishes they would up the quality of the actors. But a part of me kind of likes the charm of how bad it is and finds it entertaining.

Agreed, I think the comparison to Saw comes from the bloody nature of some of the deaths. I did not find it the least bit "scary" in the traditional horror sense.

Don't think any of the Saw films were particularly scary, they were just violence as porn films. The only one that I thought was any good was the first one, because it didn't lean that heavily into it, the second film went all-in on it. I stopped watching midway through the third.

Saw 100% turned into torture porn once the studio execs saw the returns on the original. Squid Game, like a lot of modern South Korean television and film, uses violence to hammer home broader social themes. It's usually sudden, shocking, and swift. More of an exclamation point than the whole paragraph (unlike the Saw franchise).

Very skeptical this is actually any good.

It's really not. But I couldn't stop clicking "next episode". Can't explain it.

Holy ***** The dubs are so bad. I watched with subs so I didn't know.

Thought this was a parody at first, until I looked it up (37:20 in ep2)

I thought it was an enjoyable watch overall. They definitely tried to do too much with the ending, should have wrapped it up a bit more neatly without the extra twists.

Just finished it tonight. I really enjoyed it. Kooky and suspenseful. Makes me want to go down an Asian television and film rabbit hole. I'll have to give Alice in Borderland a shot next.

2 episodes into Alice in Borderland and liking it so far. Seems like better acting. Why didn't that blow up like Squid Game?

For Korean films, check out Oldboy, I Saw the Devil, and The Man from Nowhere. The Koreans have made a lot of phenomenal revenge films.

Ive watched a ton of South Korean shows on Netflix. You see the same actors over and over.

Did Lee Byung-hun voice over the main character? It really sound liked him talking. I know he is dubbed over in his actual scenes with his mask off, but I'm curious.

I still can't process what I watched, but I liked it. I'm not sure I'd recommend it to anybody, but I guess I love the style.

The elitist rich dudes were absolutely awful, but otherwise I really enjoyed it. Alice in borderland is also very good. I probably enjoyed it a little more bc I'm very sentimental about my few years in Japan, and I love that country, but I'd recommend both to anyone that enjoys these types of shows.

The game scenes were tense and the show wasn't terrible but the old man sequence at the end was just weird. So he missed childhood and the purity of kid's games so he created this giant program for the last 15+ years that kills several hundred people via competition and murder (the weed out night in the bunk room) so that he can feel like life is fun again?

Or did I miss something?

And his people save him during the marble game but if their team had died during tug of war or if some one with a pipe kills him during the bunk room fight he just dies?

Ookk….

Theres a lot of posts and articles about how the old man was protected in the games. The green light / red light robot didn't scan him, he didn't have a lock on his shackles, etc.

For green light red light that's easy enough to figure out and work with. The tug of war bit seems weirder. So the other 9 players take a tumble and he just steps/falls to the side and blames it on triangle face errors?

They were all connected to the rope. If they go, he goes, unless maybe his was some secret fake velcro connection. But then he still has to move far enough to not get bulldozed anyway

The old main didn't care if he lived, he had a terminal sentence to death. Just because he was willing to be saved in one game doesn't mean he was protecting himself in all games. In the one he was saved he actually won the game but let the guy he liked live.

On the tug of war game, he knew what games were being played, so he gave expert advice on how to win and they did.

There's pics of the restraints around his wrists not having the lock everyone else does. It could also be his wrist is turned so others didn't see it. As others said I don't know how it work if everyone else fell and he didn't. I honestly don't think they cared about that sort of continuity.

I was more inclined to believe he didn't care if he lived or died.

If he didn't care then why not take a bullet after the marbles game when he let the other guy win? Clearly trickery and slight of hand was on the board with Ali and the investment guy.

I'm not a continuity nazi and it didn't take away from my appreciation of the series. I was just trying to figure out if there was something else I had missed along the way that might have explained it. If the thug guy ends up killing the old man during the Purge scene was there some oversight from the managers or front man that I missed?

How did the Front man know to look down at the secret tunnel to see the cop escaping? After seeing the VIP passed out, he wouldn't have had any other knowledge of where the waiter had gone.

And the more I think about it, if I've got a beef about the show, it's the cop and not the old man and his games. They spend tons of time on the cop breaking in, posing as workers/soldiers/managers/waiter, scanning the files, searching for the brother, escaping......then.....he's dead. Nothing gets uploaded from the phone, no further law enforcement involvement, his own brother kills him for some reason that's never hashed out or discussed. Just...zero from that entire story line (unless there's a sequel of course). Weird.

Forgot, but did they ever show the cop dead or just shot with water below him? May still be alive.

I'm usually not one to try to guess a twist or major plot point during the show/movie (or maybe I'm just not good at guessing it), but I actually did guess this one.

As soon as the camera panned around the wall before the gunshot that killed the old man, I thought to myself "hm, odd that they don't have a problem showing a billion other violent deaths in this show but they want to spare us some old man death. I bet this dude is the mastermind and he's been pulling a "Saw".

Nailed it!
