Previews have gotten out of hand

I went to the 7:30 showing of Star Wars last night, and the movie started at about 8:10.

Now, I love trailers as much as the next next guy, but 40 minutes of previews with 1-2 commercials mixed in (there was a weird Google commercial that was made to look like a movie trailer) is getting crazy. Is this only happening for huge "blockbuster" movies like SW, or are all theater movies getting paired with about 8 trailers now?

Side note: the trailer for "Barb and Star go to Vista Del Mar" was one of the worst concepts I've ever seen. Whatever they were trying to do there did not work

That movie looked like hot dog crap, but I'll give it credit for the comment they said about loving to go to the movies to watch 45 minutes of trailers.

as a point of reference, i couldn't get the seats I wanted for SW so hit ford vs. ferrari and there were only about 20 mins of commercials and trailers.

the last several movies I've been to have had nearly 30 minutes of commercials (that's what they actually are).

my wife saw bombshell and it had 30 minutes worth.

I wonder if theaters aren't getting as many butts in the seats ahead of the show anymore since everyone has a reserved seat so they have just shifted the ad content to after the movie was supposed to start.

And they wonder why fewer people are coming to the theater.

Aren't they reducing the number of seats to put in the nice recliners? At least they did at the AMC near me.

Less paying customers but had to increase commercials to offset.

that's another good point. yeah, they definitely reduced the amount of people that could fit in a theater at one time with those recliners.

Inththink ee has about a half hour for Star Wars which was insane, but for once, and I truly mean once, they were movies I might actually see in a theater.
Bond
Top gun
1917
Tenet
Maybe I would see Free Guy

Among others.

At the beginning of that trailer I thought we were getting a live-action version of Paperboy, then it went to ****

I had the exact same thought about paperboy... I was expecting him to go off road, jumping awesome **** and throwing his paper at targets like a boss. instead it started singing and didn't know if it was a boy or a girl.

Best preview of the night for my Star Wars viewing! Star Wars music combined with Mariachi Band!

Hope it shows I have my YouTube profile on private

Don't let TC catch you talking bad about trailers or he'll smite you down with great vengeance and furious anger.

30 minutes of trailers at the Regal Marqee in Houston Friday night for TROS (10 trailers and a commercial)
12 minutes of trailers at the Cypress Star Cinema Grill the next night for the same movie (4 trailers)

Kept looking at the time when we got out Saturday night trying to figure out why the movie was so much shorter.

Ours was about 30 minutes with the Tenet trailer/opening scene/whatever being 20 minutes of it. I don't really mind for SW, but I took my two daughters to see Frozen 2 and there were 40 minutes of trailers and commercials.

Look people, I have only so long I can keep two little girls calm. We don't have time to watch previews for every movie coming out of the next two years. Let's move this along before they burn the place down.

Went to see Knives Out the other day, walked in 10 minutes late thinking I missed most trailers...nah 23 more minutes of them, + a few commercials sprinkled in. I almost fell asleep before the movie started.

It begins to hurt the experience of the actual movie at that point.

I'll just start an entirely new thread where no negative posts about trailers are allowed, while whining about people who can't just turn their brains off and enjoy trailers...
DannyDuberstein

Yep. There is definitely a ripple effect of going from 15ish to 35-40. Beyond it just being a lot to sit thru, a long time to be there, and uncertainty about when you'll be done, there's other issues. At some point, you aren't doing the feature film many favors when Barb and Star Visit Del Mar is the 8th trailer you showing along with a cadillac commerical and UTI flavored Sprite. As mentioned above, it can be an issue with little kids. Or that piss I used to be fine holding until the movie was over? Now it's more likely I'm just going to have to pick my spot to go take it mid-movie or the last act is just going to suck.

They need to start communicating when the actual movie will start

Saw Star Wars at a museum IMAX.

Zero commercials. Zero trailers.

I kind of like trailers, but I did appreciate saving 40 minutes of my life.

I do think it's bizarre that they just run the trailers with the lights on now, or at least the last few movies I have seen did.

I used to love trailers when I was like 15. Now I can't stand them. Especially when I take my kids given the painful trailers that usually come attached to kid movies.

And yet I still have a hard time showing up even a little after the start time...even with reserved seats. I get anxiety thinking I'll miss the movie or something although logically I know that won't happen.

I think they ought to have a note when you buy tickets: trailers start at this time, movie starts at this time.

I know they must have research that indicates having this many trailers in front of the movie is fine, but I feel like 3-4 is the sweet spot. After that I fee more likely to think negatively about the trailer that is keeping me from watching the movie.

I like watching trailers, some of them are really good, but eventually there are too many and it's sorta cutting into my day.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
If they cut trailers to 3-4 I'd be sorta screwed the first time I go to a movie. I sorta assume there will be 20+minutes of trailers, and drag ass with that in mind. With reserved seats, why not get there 20 minutes late?
Bunk Moreland
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Until about a year ago 15 minutes was the default. Reserved seats in most theaters even made it better. You could show up 'late' to your seat by 15 minutes and be walking in at the end of the last trailer or right as opening credits roll..

Now it's not only longer but varies based on theater.

I always enjoyed 10-15 minutes of trailers but they have to be kidding with this 30 minutes crap.

Wow, I thought the OP was exaggerating, but from the sounds of the other posts it really does appear you guys are getting **** ton of trailers. Here at my Xscape theater we only saw four....WW84, Black Widow, Onward, and Mulan.

I almost started this exact same thread yesterday afternoon with the exact same title. Went to a noon showing of Star Wars yesterday and the film didn't start till 12: 35.

I come from a family where if you're not 20 minutes early for a movie you're late, so had to sit there for 50 minutes before the dang thing even started. I guess we started that tradition when I was younger to get a good seat, and you only had one or two previews before the movie started so if you were late you might actually miss the first part of the movie.

Yet they still cut off ticket sales 15 minutes after the stated showtime.

The only time I really get irritated is at kids' movies. The trailers and commercials are just god awful. If I'm taking my 6 year old to a movie, we usually get to our seats 20 minutes after showtime. We haven't missed the beginning of a movie yet.

Nah, I've been noticing this trend the last year or so. I see so many movies I'm not sure if I've ever put together if its only blockbusters or what, but I can't tell you how many times I've looked down at my watch recently and its 30 minutes past the said start time. I know I've had at least 8 trailers multiple times. That's absolutely ridiculous

I've always enjoyed trailers a lot, but its gotten way out of hand. Like others have said, time is our most valuable commodity, and 30-40 minutes of trailers when you're already committed to a 2.5-hour movie is crap. And I can only imagine how annoying and difficult it is for those with kids.

I'm still the old man pissed that I have to watch commercials at the ****ing movies. I'm paying for this ***** It's one thing to be subjected to them watching ' free' TV, but at the movies? Go **** yourself!

How long before they start throwing trailers throughout the middle of the movie??
No more reserving a seat and showing up 20 minutes late to bypass them.

It is a problem. I told myself, my daughter will be fine for TROS. She fought it the whole third act but lost the battle. A damn hour of commercials & trailers was the reason she missed the end of the movie. Stupid.
