Based on what I've read about the film, I won't be watching.

The TexAgs Way: Before laying eyes on a single second of footage, going out of one's way to proudly let everyone know they won't be seeing said movie.

Look, it may very well end up not being everyone's cup of tea, but this bizarre need to pre-pick sides, virtue signal, etc, will never not be so weird to me. I'm already exhausted by the discourse around this movie and it hasn't even started yet. Can we just skip it this time?

Nah lets start a thread and take it to over 100 pages.

OR we could all learn from the past and just ignore people who have different philosophies on whether to be open minded to movies or not.

Don't want to see it based on whatever buzz/rumors/interviews/tweets you've read. Cool man. You do you.

Excited or intrigued to see how this director takes on this material, even if it may be different from what you love about the property? Great! Hope that works out for you!

Ignoring the horde is way easier said than done, but on everything else I agree. That said, I am going to start a thread just to keep the inevitable discourse out of this one.

I love how you ascribe "virtue signaling" to me. It's really nothing more than the way that Hollywood must always alter well-known stories to fit some political agenda and to update something for a "modern" audience, whatever that is. Aslan is not a female character. That's a hard stop for me, particularly given the Christian undertones of the entire Narnia story. Plus whatever they are trying to say with the lion's eyes being a different color based on the story that was posted somewhere on TA about a month ago - wtf is that? You want to call that virtue signaling, you're free to do so, just as I am free to take your opinion for what it's worth.

Before laying eyes on a single frame, you, a conservative, felt compelled to let everyone know that you're not going to see the movie directed by a Hollywood liberal. In the process claiming, without any proof whatsoever, that the movie has a "political agenda" (deviations from the source material do not automatically count as "political" just because you claim them to be). That is the very definition of virtue signaling, and the kind of endless, premature, eye-rolling soap boxing this board is known for.

Dedicated thread created, which is apparently going be The Odyssey all over again...

If the publicity is anywhere near true, then I don't need to see it to recognize the political crap they have inserted into it. Meryl Streep voicing Aslan? You mean they could not locate one single male voice actor to do that? Liam Neeson wasn't available? And going from that casting choice, I then have to wonder what else they might change.

Now it's not like this particular story is one of the most recognized stories of the Narnia series. It was technically the first story in the series (ala The Phantom Menace) but was not published first. It's a story that I would very much like to see, as it was written at least to the point of established characters matching how they are described in the book. But nope, Hollywood can't have that. Gotta get that "modern" audience while taking a giant crap on the actual fans of the material.

Thanks! Now I have somewhere else to "virtue signal".

"The talking lion who's an allegory for Jesus shouldn't sound like Meryl Streep!" is the new "The Little Mermaid can't be black!" Good Lord, the thought of getting worked up over such a thing is just so incredibly dumb.

I haven't really delved into what y'all are bantering about, but is Streep really voicing a male lion?

No, Streep is voicing Aslan, who in this *******ization of the story of Christ is female.

ETA; Leaving my original comment but it appears I'm wrong. Evidently Aslan is still male, just voiced by Streep. Apologies for the misinformation; I guess I assumed and well you know the rest.

I thought they came out and said that Aslan is still male in the movie despite Streep voicing him. If that's the case, then that's not anything even remotely new when it comes to voice acting.

I don't want to get all up in this, BUT...its not meant to be an allegory. Aslan is supposed to BE the representation of Christ in the world of Narnia. That is why fans of the books, specifically Christian fans who know what Lewis was intending with his stories, feel offended by making the voice of Aslan female.

That said, I've heard Meryl read an audiobook (very well I might ad) and I think she has the chops to make the voice male and work. But I'm not sure if that is where they are going with it or not. If Bowie is also an inspiration, they may be going for that glam rock look that was considered cool in the 70s/80s, and a feminized voice may not be as offensive as it seems at first blush in 2026.

So I think fans have every reason to be nervous or not interested, but I also think one can have an open mind and be pleasantly surprised as well. WE ARE ALL COOL YOU GUYS!

I totally get not liking the idea of it. Rather, it's the performative anger from grown men on a message board, before seeing a frame of the movie itself, that I find dumb/hilarious.

The ironic part is that Jesus wouldn't have given a damn if Aslan was male/female or who voiced him. Christ wouldn't have cared if he was female himself.

I get excited for some new trailers and it's just one new trailer and this drivel. Take it to the specific thread please.

TC, I generally like you and you bring lots to this board but this is an example of your condescension

Why does it have to be performative anger that people point out some questionable casting choices and creative decisions?

So far all we have are articles; nothing has been seen. However, people have opinions and given the obvious political leanings of the director and the original source material, perhaps what you perceive as performative outrage are legitimate concerns for a very well known and well loved story.

My opinion based solely on what has been discussed so far…at some point being transgressive just for the sake of being transgressive is incredibly tiresome

So now I am performing?

Goodness. No, I am conveying a response to a change to a set of stories that I have treasured for damn near my entire life. And veryfuller is correct about what Aslan represents in the books. So I do have a disliking for making such a change to the character. I am not performing a damn thing here. I am conveying my opinion, same as you with all your not-so-subtle insults directed at those who come to different positions on movies.

Again, expressing concern and questioning casting choices are totally valid, but completely different than proudly claiming, before seeing even a frame of the movie, that you're not going to see it. The latter of which is an objectively performative act. Simply expressing concern is not. Express concern all you want, share your opinions, etc. That's not what I'm taking issue with.
