From Greta Gerwig, writer/director of Lady Bird, Little Women, and Barbie, Narnia: The Magician's Nephew is based on the 1955 novel The Magician's Nephew, the sixth published and first chronological novel in The Chronicles of Narnia book series by C.S. Lewis.

It will also be Netflix's first ever movie to receive a wide/global theatrical release in both IMAX and traditional theaters - on February 10th and 12th next year, respectively - before arriving on Netflix April 2, 2027, making for Netflix's longest theatrical window as well, by far.

That said, while a traditional theatrical release, for better or worse, don't expect a traditional Narnia movie…

Time Period Shift: The story moves from its original early-1900s setting in C.S. Lewis's book to post-war 1950s Britain, turning young characters Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer into members of the generation that would later inspire rock music.

Musical Inspiration: While it is not a literal musical with characters breaking into song, Gerwig describes the film as a "rock opera" influenced by 1960s and 1970s British rock, glam-rock aesthetics, and artists like David Bowie, The Who, Paul McCartney, David Gilmour, Jimmy Page, and Robert Plant.

Aslan's Portrayal: The cosmic lion Aslan - who sings Narnia into existence - is voiced by Meryl Streep and features a visual design inspired by David Bowie, including heterochromatic eyes and bold red stripes.

Anachronistic Soundtrack: Reports indicate the movie uses rock tracks throughout an otherwise period-authentic setting, drawing a stylistic comparison to Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette.

Personally, I think this sounds awesome, though I know purists are potentially thinking the opposite. We'll find out more tomorrow when the first trailer finally releases…

My favorite writer ever, and my favorite book series as a kid.

Zero intent to see this.

I'm betting this bombs at the box office simply because the largest percentage of the core audience for this series of books is Christians, and they simply aren't going to show up for a Bowie-inspired rock opera version where Aslan is voiced by a female.

This is different than taking liberties with The Odyssey because of the clearly Christian intent of the source material, and Greta Gerwig is not the box office draw that Nolan is. Barbie was a super hit but it didn't propel her into that stratosphere.

I asked my 10 year old daughter nonchalantly how she would feel if Aslan was voiced by a woman and she just cut eyes at me as if I was crazy.

I definitely feel nervous about this for all the reasons.

Gerwig hasn't proven she is the drawl yet. She has gradually made more money on her movies and Barbie was a huge hit. But this will put it to the test for sure.

On the other hand, I'm a big fan of all her movies. Barbie is my least favorite of the three she has directed, and I still think it's solid. She always comes up with interesting ways to frame a story and she isn't preachy like her contemporaries can be. There is a pretty good chance that despite all the risks that the movie turns out to be good if not even truly special. If that's the case, then I think it could do really well.

It's a big risk for sure so it could bomb really bad as well. Especially because the changes/risks are alienating the core fans and I am not sure there is a new audience that is ready to dive into this world.

Let's start with Meryl Streep as the Jesus allegory.

I liked Lady Bird, Little Women, and Barbie. But right now for me she's still at "Will check out on streaming" not "Will check out in theaters".

And I just don't envision the new audience you're talking about being large enough to make up for the Christians who won't be seeing it.

I also have an issue with Gerwig's statement on why she chose Streep....

"I wanted someone who was profound but not pretentious, who had gravitas but not morose self-seriousness," she explained to Empire of casting Aslan. "Someone who could communicate depth and pathos as well as joy and delight."

Gerwig added, "I wanted someone who was older than 70, so there was a wisdom of experience, but who also had the capacity of fresh wonder, like a child. And also to be one of the greatest actors to ever do it. That list is not a long one."

Off the top of my head, Anthony Hopkins, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Jeff Bridges are all males who could have filled that requirement nicely.

So, she's being disingenuous with her statement. If she simply wanted to work with Meryl Streep then just say that. If she wanted Aslan to be female or perhaps simply androgenous (like Bowie), then just say that.

But her statement alone does not explain why Meryl Streep was the perfect fit for what she was looking for.

I'm not an f16 guy and… this sounds terrible at first look to me. This better have some amazing trailers or I agree it is going to bomb hard.

I'm not sure if Narnia has the drawing power like other IPs and after watching the other lion/witch/wardrobe movie 1000 times I am very skeptical of a new iteration. Also Narnia movie had one of the best scores …. Ever…. And you are going to make some weird rock rendition in a fantasy setting. Awful.

I don't think you can call her disingenuous for this. You can say that male is another prerequisite for you for this that she does not share, but of the things she listed, she is right that there are not a lot of actors who can pull that off. I think Bridges is the only one your list that I would agree with. But also, I haven't seen what she is going for so maybe he would have been wrong for it too.

I'd add Kevin Kline too.

I think picking a female to voice Aslan will more than likely end up being a mistake, and seems to already be a huge unforced error in marketing this adaptation, but we don't have to assume bad motives or dishonesty in how she is speaking about her decisions just because we disagree with the choice.

I think the implication is that she is being disingenuous not because of equating Streep to her criteria, but that she created the criteria specifically because it fit with Streep.

I'll go see it, because the Magician's Nephew is a severely underrated book, and the Narnia books for me are what Harry Potter was for later generations - the books I met in the school library that I practically memorized and wanted to intently to be real. I was convinced as a kid there had to be a way to Narnia.

But yeah, Meryl Streep as Aslan just seems like such a dumb thing to do. Almost like you were going to find the most esteemed actress out there so that when people complained, you could say "well, yes, but it's Meryl Streep!"

Aslan is a male lion. That's what the mane is for. Instituting pronoun switches is something I would have expected from Shift the Ape.

Ok, that's a valid point...that perhaps there were additional qualities in the character which required a female to be able to portray that in their voice. But if that's the case then she should have added that to her statement. You're telling me she listed a lot of qualities she looked for, but left out a specific reason why the actor had to be female?

By not providing a reason why an actress rather than an actor was chosen she's forcing people to assume why based on their own beliefs. And most people, IMO, are going to assume its for subversive reasons.

I don't really want to defend the choice. I think it is courting controversy from the very target demographic you need to show up. I just don't believe she did it to be subversive or controversial. She is probably going for something….whether she able to achieve that is yet to be seen.

I am skeptical but I want to see what her vision is before I pass final judgement on whether she has bad intentions or not.

Lame.

My oldest three (8, 6, 4) just finished listening to the entire Narnia series on audiobook (with Sir Patrick Stewart reading The Last Battle). They are budding young Christians who pickup on the symbolism and allegory. It would've been great timing to let them watch, but I think we are going to pass on this version.

I don't understand the choice of Netflix to go with Narnia, but then Greta as director and Streep as Aslan. Maybe Streep could've been cast as Jadis, though even that may be a stretch considering her age.

Your god might be non-binary but Yahweh is male. His being male is actually foundational to much of Christianity. Christ marries the church (His bride).

What would be the point of yet another traditional adaptation that looks/feels exactly like the other three? Christians got three faithful, massively popular adaptations across five years, all of which still hold up, provide the perfect Aslan casting, etc. So why would anyone do basically the same thing again theatrically? Maybe if they went the Harry-Potter-on-HBO route and turned into a series, I could understand that decision.

Creatively/Theatrically, though, it makes sense to try something new and different. Also, Gerwig brought the idea to Netflix, not the other way around. She's effusively described the Narnia series as "the literature of her childhood," stating that she grew up reading, loving, and imagining herself inside Narnia. Not to mention, C.S. Lewis' family has publicly vouched for her, noting that her lifelong passion and love for the source material are genuine. To that end, the idea that she's going to turn this into some subversive liberal fantasy that Christian families should avoid is pretty far-fetched.

I'm not saying people have to like this iteration. Not at all. It just seems so TexAgs/cliched to dismiss it outright before seeing a single frame of the movie itself. Who knows, after tomorrow's trailer I may even pass. But the core idea isn't all that crazy, considering Aslan literally sings Narnia into existence. So I get the inspiration to take that kernel and run with it, re: the 1950s rock opera idea, which could be really fun, while hopefully still honoring the books' original themes.

Don't be obtuse, you know what you're doing. Kicking the hornets nest. There's a perfectly good r&p forum to discuss biblical theology.

To bring up and discuss whether or not GOD has reproductive organs is way out of bounds.

Aslan parallels Jesus, not the Father so your argument is pointless.

I think you enjoy the antagonism for some reason. This forum could be cool. Yes other posters don't back down either. It's just tiresome.

If someone is going to assert god is male then it only follows to ask if he possesses the traits that define "male".

The thing i have dreaded since it was announced she was doing the Chronicles of Narnia. A series I grew up reading and loving before Harry Potter came out. A story created by one of the most influential Christian authors of all time, written as Christian allegory, and they're doing this.

To me, it's beyond disgusting.

Normally, I'm happy to debate Hollywood's bull****, but ultimately I'm never THAT invested in it. But screwing with this series in this way is something I do take personally.

As others have mentioned, the rejection of the core audience and the fact the IP isn't as huge of a draw as it has been in the past will most likely lead to a failure. This is a time when I actually hope and pray it does.

Fortunately, we are not far off from being able to simply prompt an AI model to create a live action version of each book and it will probably be better and more respectful of the artists vision, than this abomination will be.

At least we'll always have the 2005 version of the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Literally one of the greatest adaptations of any book, imo.
