Fantastic trailer. Really slick new take on the visuals. I expected to find this thread full of hatred and instead seems mostly positive. Daniel craig is a brilliant choice for the uncle. Maybe Streep won't actually ruin it

It definitely felt like the subliminal message was - if you loved the 05 movie as a little kid, get high cuz you're an adult and come see this!

I just watched the trailer. It gave me Ant-Man Quantumania vibes with all that colorful CGI. The England sequences look right for the time frame. While I like the song they play, I do not like it for this movie. The ghost lion was fine with an actual lion's roar, but I note they didn't have the lion say anything.

I really don't like the timeline change either what that means for any future movies aligning to the novels.

Yeah, I can see that ... even though I never saw that particular movie.

Yeah, I don't think I'll ever watch Part 2 again. I've watched Part 1 5-6 times. I've probably listened to "Defying Gravity" 500 times.

You guys know more about this than me but is she as a director (and Barbie as a movie) at the point where they need or deserve to be plastered on the trailer for this movie. Maybe that helps but to me the trailer was setting a feel and a style and then giant white Greta and Barbie on the screen kinda ruined it. .

Barbie made $1.44 billion at the box office won an Oscar for best original song and received nominations in 7 other categories including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress. So, yeah, seemed like a good marketing tool.

All three of her movies have been best picture nominees as well as multiple other categories, always including acting and writing. That's pretty rare air.

Gerwig was an "indie" actress who starred in some great movies in the late '00s/early '10s... Greenberg, Frances Ha, Mistress America, etc. She was also a writer during that time and co-wrote Frances Ha with director Noah Baumbach, who was/is kind of like the "indie" king. That movie garnered all kinds of critical acclaim (it's one of my personal favorites of the century), then Gerwig and Baumbach started dating, basically becaming prom king and queen of the "indie" world.

Dating a director, Gerwig then got the directing bug herself, and that's when she wrote/directed Lady Bird in 2017, which went on to become an awards darling and basically one of the most beloved "indie" movies of the past 15 years or so. After that she wrote/directed a Little Women remake with an incredibly stacked cast, which was also nominated for multiple awards, cementing her as the new "it" female director.

As a producer, Margot Robbie then convinced Gerwig and Baumbach to write Barbie, which was a huge shock to the industry, considering, again, they were "indie" people not big blockbuster/commercial people. But Warner Bros ended up loving the script, and Gerwig ultimately wanted a new challenge, thus she decided to direct it herself and the rest is history.

So, yeah, everything Charley Kerfeld mentioned above, combined with her earlier "indie"/awards pedigree, and she's basically the most popular female director on the planet right now, who's name carries a ton of weight both inside and outside of the industry. She's also well known for being incredibly kind, approachable, and down to earth, which earns her a lot of cache around town too.

Great point as well. Going three-for-three on Best Picture nominations, with your first three movies, is pretty much unheard of.

My first thought when the description was posted was honestly ragnarok-esque. That is still kind of the vibe I got from the trailer too.

Ragnarok is one of my favorites just not sure it works with Narnia but I enjoyed the trailer so we shall see.

I doubt she directs another one of these. Right now it's looking like she'll do Barbie 2 next for a 2029/2030 release, so the earliest she could return to this franchise is 2030 or so for a release a year or two or three later, and I doubt Netflix wants to wait that long. Plus, I'd be surprised if a filmmaker like her wants to spend her time going back and forth between two mega franchises. She's almost assuredly going to want to do smaller stuff again too.

Are they really making a Barbie 2? Not sure where they go with that. The first one wrapped everything up and didn't leave any open questions.

Skydance/Paramount just bought Warner Bros and Skydance wants hits. As long as the same team returns, Barbie 2 is damn near guaranteed to be just that. Gerwig/Baumbach apparently have an idea for the sequel, negotiations are currently taking place, and Gerwig/Baumbach/Robbie/Gosling all stand to make a fortune, considering the leverage they have, which, for better or worse, is probably their primary motivating factor.

Good look from Empire at Jadis, played by Emma Mackey

Watching the trailer again reminded me of the great little illustrations in the original novels, including these

What this really tells me if the Odyssey just would have had better trailers after their awkward casting decisions, we wouldn't have had a 900 page thread before the movie came out.

Trailer looks awesome. Love the time shift and the updated visuals.

The books are some of my favorite and I'm fine with seeing a new take on them from an established director. The first Narnia films are fine, not spectacular.

Watched the trailer several more times.

I do have to say that small clip we have of the creation of Narnia is extremely well done. That may be one of the best artistic illustrations of creation. I'm still very skeptical, but have to admit that whoever put this trailer together knows what they're doing.

I made the mistake of trying to read this book 1st to my kids because it was #1 in the boxed set. Pretty boring so we just jumped to LWW, this movie actually looks fun from the trailer.

Again, I attended church weekly for damn near 30 years. I was also intimately involved with Young Life for a number of those years. I've read the Bible multiple times and many of the most popular books on Christianity during those three decades. I absolutely have a fundamental understanding of Christianity and faith. In fact, it's that fundamental understanding that ultimately led me to deconstruct, as I eventually came across too many contradictions, inconsistencies, and hypocrisies to believe that a truly fair and loving God could possibly be the God of the Bible.

Regardless, I'm not telling anyone how to watch a movie. I haven't done that once. I'm simply saying that A) I find it hilarious/ridiculous when grown ass men angrily ***** and moan in virtue signaling fashion on a message board about a movie before even seeing a trailer, much less the movie itself, and B) Gerwig is at least trying to find her way into/through Christianity, in her own way, instead of dismissing it outright, while a bunch of Christian keyboard warriors judge her for not worshipping in what they believe is the exact the right way.

okay but to be fair one of the most popular books during that time period was the Left Behind series which is rotgut stupid fictional trash that led a lot of young people to believe really dumb theology.

I feel like maybe I'm in the minority on the trailer. As soon as I heard Greta's name was attached, I knew I wasn't going to get the big beautiful LOTR style/Redwall fantasy feeling we are used to having. When I read her Bowie/Rock Opera inspiration, I knew this wasn't going to (for me) feel like a Narnia film at all. However, I am a BIG fan of Rock Operas, so I was looking forward to it as a loosely inspired by but not remotely accurate to artistic rock opera. Something that I think Gerwig is capable of (tbh the only things I really liked about Barbie were the set design and Costumes though)

After watching the trailer,

This didn't look like a Narnia adaption that will sing to my childhood soul.

Nor did it look like a particularly good rock opera. Psychadelic sure.. feels inspired by Barbarella and the Labyrinth without the heart.

It didn't feel particularly cohesive.. but its an initial trailer. maybe it will get better.

I had the thought yesterday that maybe she wants Streep's gravitas, but the voice will be more of a neutral thing, altered to make it sound more ethereal. As much as I loved LIam Neeson in the 05 movie, it still made me think, "Why am I listening to Qui-Gon Jinn talk to the Penseive kids?"

I understand the critique of the CGI.

BUT the trailer doesn't show any of Narnia proper, except for when Aslan is roaring it into existence. The Magician's Nephew is all other worlds and worlds between worlds and doesn't feature Narnia really at all, save for its creation. So the look of it isn't surprising to me at all. It should look otherworldly. I imagine Narnia itself will feel much more grounded in way that most imagine it to be.

Also, again, women voice male characters all the time in animation and we still don't know if that is or isn't what Streep will be doing here. Either way, I doubt Aslan will be straight up female-sounding. My guess is it's going to be more of an ethereal/sex-neutral voice, which Streep would be perfect for, if not masculine leaning.
