I will say I really dug the subtle motion of everything during the trips. Most psychedelic effects in movies and tv are just completely awful

The flowers on her in the final scenes opening and closing I had to give a second look thinking it was wind or something else and was really impressed

I saw it on Thursday. I had also seen heredity.

I didn't think it was scary, a bit ****ing bizarre and weird but it didn't scare me. It was interesting. Pretty messed up in a lot of ways. I think heredity was a little weirder though.

I just saw fighting with my family a few weeks ago and it was the same girl and she was so different in both of them.
Currently a happy listless vessel and deplorable. #FDEMS TRUMP 2024.

Pretty accurate. It wasn't outright scary but it was extremely uncomfortable the entire time.

It's not what I would call a favorite movie of mine, but what an entertaining movie experience. I can't wait to see what he does next, especially in the horror genre, though in the AMA he's doing on reddit today, it sounds like a comedy is his next likely offering.

https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/cbxc8v/hi_im_ari_aster_writerdirector_of_midsommar_ama/

what is kind of funny to me is that it's basically a story of a girl that experiences a personal tragedy and ultimately finds a new loving family that welcomes her in. it's a feel good movie!

I love how people on Twitter are using this as an example of a woman in a toxic relationship, blatantly ignoring the fact that her boyfriend emotionally held her up for years, forgoing physical intimacy, eventually getting drugged, raped, and burned to death.

Saw this tonight. Aster is going on my must watch list. 2 for 2. **** was weird, but in a really interesting way. I lost my **** when the "helpful" push happened. I think most of the theater did too.

Also lol, do you guys really think Christian was "holding her up"? Cause that's an awful misread, IMO. He was afraid to move on and was kind of a coward and did more harm than good, IMO. Once he had an option to move on, he did. And then he got roasted, lol.

Just got out. Agree with poster above me. I'm a fan. This was a pure acid trip.

He likes to slowly make you uncomfortable right? Holy ***** It's not really horror. He's tapped into something else. I don't know what I would call this. Not really deep in it's message. But pretty deep in it's delivery yeah? ****ing Sweden man.

I'm gonna have to stew on this. This movie disturbs you. And almost comically so. Would love to go through that soundtrack again. Someone mentioned the opening with the couch to title screen transition. That violin almost suffocates with you with those staccato notes. Great, great stuff

I kinda want to see this movie but I keep hearing "if you thought hereditary was crazy..." I don't really know if that's good or bad.

It's a situation where both of them are to blame, which is the key theme of co-dependence (to go along with desire for familial support and dependence.

She didn't want to lose him, but she wasn't doing a lot of the things that he wanted in the relationship. He didn't want to lose her (I think he had a line early in the film about what if he wants her back later but can't get her), but wasn't committed to making it work.

I don't think it's fair to say "once he had an option to move on, he did"... The drugs they kept feeding them had a lot to do with the decisions the two main characters made... They showed quite a bit of "resistance" by Christian before he finally broke and went into the barn.

In the end, Dani actually got the familial cradle she had been lacking since her tragedy... Christian certainly didn't benefit from the trip.

Aster certainly knows how to pick his young leads -- both Pugh and Wolff (Hereditary) absolutely nailed scenes of despair and discomfort in a way that you rarely see.

"Option to move on"?

You mean when he was drugged, disoriented, crying, and raped?

I'll agree he was a coward. He should've left that relationship long before the film started.

The director has already admitted he wrote this based on a breakup in his personal life. It was his way of getting closure.

Talk about some ****ed up closure.

Definitely really enjoyed this one.

Question, what happened to the girl that was from London, who's bf we were told left but we see him dead at the end. Did she end up getting away? Also to someone aboves point of what would've happened had Dani not come well I assume that other chick would've been scoped to be the May queen.

London girl was definitely in a wheel barrow at the end.

Is it possible to explain what was so uncomfortable about it without spoilers? We always watch a scary movie on Halloween and I'm trying to decide if this would be a good one to watch!

Mainly, because he said he was looking for a scary movie to watch together on Halloween. If he had asked for a daughter/MIL rape orgy type movie, I would have said go for it...although the thought of my MIL in my bedroom is quite terrifying

Watched it! Question: Would you have been WAY more freaked out than the Americans were (PRIOR to the cliff scene), or did it just seem really creepy and weird to us because we knew we were watching a horror movie?
jschroeder

I wouldn't be freaked out so much as I'd be like "wow, this is just like the first episode of Norsemen"
