Bruce Dickinson and it isn't even close. He has it all. Longevity, energy, vocals, writing. The guy was an olympic fencer, flies the 747 for the band, writes books & movies, then gets throat cancer-- beats throat cancer and still rocking like a maniac on stage.

I have seen Iron Maiden many times and every show is friggin nails. Just amazing performer and Bruce is the quintessential front man.

Except he got fired by the band and u cant be the best frontman if someone else fronted your own band
They literally run concerts like a play same show every night and they are spectacular and a top 10 rock band of all time

Love the Maiden and my other brother you prob wanna meet to get backstage on the next tour

When was he fired?
In the 1990's they split and they got some other singer that I never got into. It was the typical creative differences thing because Bruce wanted to do his solo work (Tattooed Millionaire great CD). They got back together just after 2000 with Brave New World and they have been great ever since. I didn't care for their latest release, Book of Souls, but the rest of the post 2000 releases are fantastic.

Dave Grohl is fun on the Internet and a cool guy but he isn't even close to Cobain Staley or Cornel

Vedder is the best of the grunge front men and it really isn't close

You could also throw Paul Rodgers into the mix depending on what criteria you are using. Fantastic voice and in several touring groups over the years.

For harder rock/metal, I would throw in Ronnie James Dio and Rob Halford.

For rock/stage show theatrics, I would throw in Alice Cooper.

I'm as big a Springsteen fan as they come and I wouldn't even put him in my Top 5 in regards to front men.

He works his ass off and always puts on a great show, but much of that weight is carried by the 6-7 other incredibly talented people in the E-Street Band.

Little Richard? I did not see him live in his prime but it sure looked like he put on a helluva show.

Dio I can see. Rob has a great voice but I find his live act a bit boring he just stands there and glowers for the most part.

Huge difference between great singer and great frontman. Vintage David Lee Roth is one of the greats as far as frontmen go but he was always a horrible singer. In the end I'd probably have to go with Freddie Mercury over everyone else. Dude just owned the stage like no other.

Roth stole quite a bit from Jim Dandy - a magnetic frontman in the 70s especially for Black Oak Arkansas.
It's fine to steal in this context, and Roth was charismatic.

I really miss Bon Scott, especially when I crank the masterpiece Powerage. With many Miller Lite.

If Jay Buchanan keeps this up, he will be in the conversation.

Iron Maiden has never released a bad album - ever - which is pretty impressive. I think it's mostly because they were able navigate record companies somewhat decently.

I always am frustrated that Cheap Trick - most underrated band in rock history - released some bad albums because the stupid record companies forced them to do nonsense.

If you have a genius like Nielsen, or John Fogerty, or Mark Knopfler, then you SHUT UP, and let them release what they want.

Currently watching the Queen concert from '81 in Montreal that Disney+ recently added.

Freddie makes a really strong case.

Gotta be Robert Plant. That was the first name that came to mind.

It's Mick Jagger. Without any doubt it's Jagger. Look at what he's doing right now at 80 freaking years old in Las Vegas. 80. Years. Old. 81 years old in two months!

That's a good point.

I'm not sure what Alex and Geddy playing with other Canucks to honor Gordon Lightfoot has to do with it though.

Edit: I see you fixed your link

No I didn't. You must be hallucinating...

But, yes, in your fever dream Geddy and Alex did play some Gordon Lightfoot recently...

I may or may not be a little tall, as the old jazz cats would say. When I clicked on the thread and started reading the last page of posts I found myself really agreeing with one post. I went to star it and then realized it was my own post. When I stopped laughing I thought it would be funny to quote myself.

Billy Corgan is among the best. Definitely not a great traditional vocalist, but the dude is a force. Great on guitar, great lyricist, great and prolific songwriter. Listening to his interview and Jimmy's on Rick Beato helped me realize just how deep his knowledge of music and the industry are.

Almost impossible to argue against Mick Jagger taking the mantle here. I will say Freddy Mercury was a god.

The obvious ones have already been mentioned. For me the real answer is probably Robert Plant. I mentioned Billy because I don't think he gets enough recognition.

Really not even debatable to me personally lol.

Like it's weird to me people don't see that or agree.

It's debatable because fronting a rock band has a lot of elements to it. Mercury is probably one of the strongest purely in terms of vocals. His voice is strong and he sounds as if he had a background in choral music. He came up with awesome melodies. Lyrics? Instrument mastery? Songwriting consistency? Not the greatest. There are definitely a half dozen guys that could all be arguably considered the greatest for different reasons.

Dude wrote Bohemian Rhapsody and you're questioning his songwriting skills? Lol. And this is about a front man. Who cares about instrument mastery?
Cliff.Booth
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Do people like that song unironically? It's a crazy song but...also annoying AF. It's like the perfect drunk karaoke song. And yeah being a frontman whose instrumental parts add to the mix is one of many elements worth considering. It's weird that anyone would think an answer to this question is obvious. It's subjective and involves a lot of variables.

Watch the concert I referenced above.

Freddie plays piano and guitar and kills it as a lead singer and frontman playing both of those or just holding a mic.

I'll check it out. I'm not dogging on him, obviously insanely talented, just not sure he's definitely the GOAT. I'm not the biggest fan of Queen's sound in general, though.

It's fine not to be a fan of their sound, but watch and see Freddie work.

His appearance at Live Aid at Wembley stadium is legendary.
