I like Peaky Blinders but it would not be top 10 or me - love the characters, the period/genre and the production but the story does not grab me as much as others. I want to like it more than I do - but definitely worth watching. Very good TV.

I'm probably a bit biased since it's what I'm re-watching right now... but the character progression is just unmatched. Watching Kema turn into a female McNulty is just tough.
Kema going undercover is one of the most tense moments I've witnessed on a scripted show. Edge of my seat.

Awesome!

"This is $800?!?"

"So what...you earned that bump like a mo**** f*****"

Love that scene every time I see it.

I also love the fact that Snoop was basically just a street kid from Baltimore that they put into that role.

If you've never seen the Wire and you see that scene, you have zero clue how great that scene is. If you've seen the Wire, and you see that scene, it sucks you right back into the moment and reminds you what a fun burn it was.

Sooo does The Wire pick up the pace at some point? I'm 11 episodes into season 1 and it seems pretty slow. It's taken me 3 separate attempts at watching the show to even get this far.
I've had several friends ask this same question but my common response was "just fight through the first three episodes and you'll love it".

And then they did. I've never heard someone say it took them the full season 1. Each to their own but if you don't like it after one you'll be super bored by season 2, which is flat out amazing. :-)

Just curious as to what people's favorite season is?

For me, season 4 is the greatest thing in television history.

4 is my sentimental favorite but 2 has grown on me through the years to the point that it's almost a tie between those two (but not quite).

I just finished rewatching the entire series of The Shield & I still love it. Still In my top favorites of all time.
I think I'll rewatch The Wire next. It's been a little while.

Have you made to episode 12? "Cleaning up" is when the roller coaster takes off after the slow ascension. I dont know anyone who didnt keep going after that.

The Wire was/is incredible and is still underrated to this day.

Sopranos is my favorite of all time
BB, Mad Men, The Shield are fantastic
Narcos.

I need to clear the calendar and go back to the Shield for a third time. It pained me in my own mind and heart to put BB ahead of it one day as strange as that may sound.

The opening scene of every episode of the Shield would make me involuntarily Tiger fist pump as soon as the theme hit.

The ending of season 4 was the most dramatic and most depressing ending I have ever seen. I had to take a break for a couple of weeks to process everything before starting season 5. The story arc of those kids was amazing.

Started watching The Wire about a month ago for the very first time (after several prior attempts). Finally, pushed through S1 and man, this show is simply amazing.

I'm half way through S4, do I need to stop at the end of this season or finish out the entire series?

FInish.
The 5th season gets a bit off. But the way he writes about newspapers and the media is still very relevant. The series ending credits are worth the price of finishing season 5.

Billions was fantastic. Great dialogue twisty plots memorable characters

If you decide to try it, beware the scene in episode 1 that is not appropriate for work

I started S1E1 at least three times. Stuck with it and The Cost got me hooked. It's a slow burn at first but pays off.

I loved The Wire.

And everyone is certainly entitled to their own opinions but it doesnt even come close to the greatness of Breaking Bad imho.

Of the 3 shows mentioned Id rank em..

Breaking Bad
Sopranos
The Wire

But I think BB is almost untouchable in its its greatness .

Still like my list as far as those mentioned before my post. But Ill go ahead and have the unpopular opinion that Southland and The Shield are better cop shows than The Wire.

I really, really liked Southland and The Shield. I haven't seen The Wire or Sopranos. Maybe soon.

My other two favorite recent"ish" cop shows are Justified and Longmire.

The Wire had maybe THE best series finale OAT. Tied everything together perfectly and it was a show that wove a few story lines.

I enjoyed it more than BB, which I think is overrated. Flame away.

Finished the series. I was certainly rooting for certain things to happen but at the end of the day, that's not what the series was all about. Hated seeing Dukie end up a junkie on the street…

One of my favorite scenes was the FBI BAU guy describing the homeless killer as Jimmy to a T, with Jimmy just sitting there

The way she talks is nails on a chalkboard to me.

I lived in MD for 7 years, been to Baltimore many times. The Wire, is not fiction, especially the first season.

I have seen all the big shows and still think the Sopranos the best show written in terms of dialogue and characters but I think The Wire is the best show written in terms of plot. Three huge (eventually four with the media) aspects all woven together; politics, drugs, and police. It's just incredible. I've rewatched it 3-4 times and I've watched The Sopranos 3-4 times. Both are a notch above Breaking Bad and The Shield, just a notch.

Sopranos or Mad Men is the best Americana drama of all time.

The Wire is the best social commentary drama of all time

Breaking Bad is the best fictionalized American drama of all time.

This.

Trying to get through it now. The first 5 seasons were incredible. The 6th season is/was trying way too hard on their social commentary which has aged poorly.

Also, Second season of The Wire, was done because of the push back of showing Baltimore like Baltimore really is.

The Baltimore Sun writers being adamant about "telling the truth" and all of that, was pure non-sense.
