Correct, which is why buy-oh-pic makes no sense.
You don't don't say buy-oh-graf-ee. You say buy-ah-grah-fee.
I didn't say there was - it was an example of how acronyms are different than a portmanteau. that's all.double aught said:This. Why would there be any confusion or disagreement about how to pronounce letters?Brian Earl Spilner said:

I thought it was 'biographical picture'. 'Biography picture' isn't proper english.TCTTS said:
Exactly. It's "biography picture" abbreviated. Or, if you want to get technical, "biography motion picture." But when "bio" is on its own, you don't say "bi-ah" you say "bi-o." Thus, "bio-pic."
correct - it's biographic picture. not biography picture.62strat said:I thought it was 'biographical picture'. 'Biography picture' isn't proper english.TCTTS said:

Look up the definition of biopic, and it says biographical movie.
I'm in the long O camp.

Biopic is its own word, there is no hyphen. Despite its origin being a combination of two wither words, the pronunciation is not dictated by the individual pronunciation of those two.

biography is a noun
you don't use noun to describe another noun.
it's an adjective (biography) that describes the noun (picture) or an attribute to describe that noun.
good lord.

What the hell? Did some of you grow up in foreign households watching European tv or something?
I grew up in the middle of Texas and never once heard someone say "bi-AH-pic" (in person or on tv) or think to pronounce it that way.
