This. Why would there be any confusion or disagreement about how to pronounce letters?

Correct, which is why buy-oh-pic makes no sense.

You don't don't say buy-oh-graf-ee. You say buy-ah-grah-fee.

But the word is not biography it is biographic which you do say buy-oh-graf-ic

hence it is bio-pic

I didn't say there was - it was an example of how acronyms are different than a portmanteau. that's all.

Exactly. It's "biography picture" abbreviated. Or, if you want to get technical, "biography motion picture." But when "bio" is on its own, you don't say "bi-ah" you say "bi-o." Thus, "bio-pic."
I thought it was 'biographical picture'. 'Biography picture' isn't proper english.
Look up the definition of biopic, and it says biographical movie.

correct - it's biographic picture. not biography picture.

biography is a noun
you don't use noun to describe another noun.

it's an adjective (biography) that describes the noun (picture) or an attribute to describe that noun.

good lord.

bio-pic.

period.

Biopic is its own word, there is no hyphen. Despite its origin being a combination of two wither words, the pronunciation is not dictated by the individual pronunciation of those two.

I was stunned the other day when I learned some people stand up when they wipe. That [inferior] option had never even crossed my mind. There is always someone out there.

What in the actual ****?

Wait this has turned to ass wiping now?
Was it SNL back in the day that had a character named Ass wipe, pronounced AZ-wee-pay.

You're both right. I knew something was off about my usage, but the point is still exactly the same. We're all on the same page here.

I say bi-AH-pic, rhymes with myopic, mainly because thats how I tended to hear it pronounced on TV when I was younger (my inclination when seeing it written would have been to say "bio" plus "pic" but I mentally corrected myself because of how I had heard it said). I'm assuming by movie critics maybe? How did Siskel, Ebert, and Roeper etc pronounce the word? I have only recently heard it pronounced the other way a few times and wondered about it.

What the hell? Did some of you grow up in foreign households watching European tv or something?
I grew up in the middle of Texas and never once heard someone say "bi-AH-pic" (in person or on tv) or think to pronounce it that way.

(BTW, my outrage isn't real, so relax. I do thinks its strange to say bi-ah-pic, but to think that there's an actual 3 page thread on it is even stranger, in a hilarious way).

Haha. I grew up in Texas, too and I can confirm what 2 or 3 others have said. That was how you heard it on TV in the 80s/90s. As a kid in Texas during that time I had no other exposure to that word. It wasn't a word my parents used in normal conversation, and the internet wasn't a thing yet.
