The UK one is bio-pic.

The UK one is bi-op-ic. US is bi-oh-pic. I"m saying Hollywood pronounces it bi-oh-pic.

You're right. I misremembered. Weird. Either way, bi-oh-pic is the one Hollywood uses, and thus the one I'm going with, since they invented the word.

Sure as hell seems weird that they'd have bio-pic as the UK one.

and both are easily comprehended as to why they are pronounced that way.

gif = graphical interchange format

The g is a "guh" sound as in gun (not gin) from the word the acronym stands for "Graphical". Thats common for the pronunciation of acronyms first letters - not so much for the other letters.

For example FBI = federal bureau of investigation but its "efff beeee eye" not "efff beee (soft) iiiiii"

And I don't care what the originator gif says.




biopic = biographical picture

it's not an acronym but a portmanteau - a blend of linguistic "phones" (sounds) or morphemes.

you sound it how you would sound each part then blend it - so bio-pic.

like smog = smoke + fog

If you simply think of what the acronym or portmanteux you are saying stands for it's quite easy.
