Sorry for the random question, but I feel like people here would know better, and I can't find anything definitive anywhere.

I keep hearing both "buy-oh-pic" and "biahp-ic" from different interviews on youtube.

Thanks and gig 'em.

Almost started this thread myself.

When I read the word, my mind always says ""biahp-ic." But recently, I keep noticing celebrities and interviewers say "bio-pic."

For me, it's always been "buy-oh-pic", so it always takes me aback when people say it the other way.

Uhhhh, seems pretty straightforward....it's "BIO" and "PIC" put together. Nowhere in there does "ah" or "uh" make an appearance.

How do you pronounce biology?

Exactly. It's "biography picture" abbreviated. Or, if you want to get technical, "biography motion picture." But when "bio" is on its own, you don't say "bi-ah" you say "bi-o." Thus, "bio-pic."

According to this, American English and British English have different pronunciations.

Clearly it is three syllables
Bi as in buy
Op as in op-ham Gangnam Style
Ic as in icky

This. How is this even a debate?

This seems to be a jif/gif debate. Both sides are convinced they're correct. (It's "jif", btw.)

the same people that say "buy-oh-pik" probably also say "kill-oh-meter" or "foh-toh-graf-er"

This. I've never in my life heard someone refer to a biographic movie and a Bi-AH-pic. I would look at them like they were crazy if someone said that to my face.

I swear that's how I first heard it spoken on tv. Just noticed the bio-pic pronunciation being more prevalent recently. But I probably don't listen to as much podcast or entertainment industry news as some of the diehards around here.

FWIW, I asked the english teacher that works across from me (who happened to study at Oxford for a year), and he said both are correct in America. The English pronunciation is bi-o-pic, but its also correct in American english to say bi-ah-pic.

I've never heard it pronounced bio-pic. Always bi-op-ic.

Not to pull out the "I work in the industry" card, but... I work in the industry and the common pronunciation is absolutely bio-pic.

Well your industry has always pronounced it bi-op-ic on television every time I've heard it. And I'm in the television watching industry.

It's not buy-oh-lodge-ee so why would you say buy-oh-pic?

Huh? It wasn't. I was leaning bio-pic and you confirmed it for me.

A bunch of dumb Americans not wanting to sound like dumb Americans!
TCTTS

Because "logy" is a suffix, not a word. Again, "biopic" is an abbreviation and a combination of two separate words. It's not a prefix/suffix situation.
