Season 6 was great. Season 5 was the weakest of the series.

I started watching this except I just realized I started with season with season 4, I don't like the prime layout on my TCL! I should be starting season 6. Not sure if I should go back to the beginning, or just finish season 6 and be done.
Yes. You should go back. And rewatch it several times.
I started in season 3 (as they aired), and went back and watched the first 2 seasons a couple of years later. You really need to start from the beginning to truly understand who the characters are and how they got to where the are in S3 and after.
I've decided to go forward then back to the beginning. Too much time invested. I just hate the prime layout. Netflix is so much better for so many reasons.
Edit to add: the pregnant wife confused me as did Dewey. I'm sure if I started from the beginning they'd make more sense.

Cliff notes: Wynona is annoying and fickle. Dewey Crowe is hilarious and a little light on the brain power to be the criminal mastermind he wishes he was.
But always remember, where there's a Wynn Duffy, there's a way in, through, and out of any problem.
That's my go to anytime it is appropriate to work into conversation. Very few people pick up on it, which only makes it better.

Episodes 2 through 4 or 5 have Raylan basically chasing down a 'bad guy of the week' while Boyd is recovering from his gun shot. When Boyd comes back into the spotlight, the show gets into it's groove and the rest of the season starts to get more focused. Except for anything Crowder-related in these episodes, they are pretty forgettable.
Not a troll. I've invested time in 2 seasons in the middle of the series, finally realizing I'm just halfway thru the series. I have extremely poor internet. I'm not going back to S1 to catch up with S6. I'll finish S6 then go back.
And I'm also disturbed by Sam Elliot without facial hair.

So if I go back and watch, will I have a let down because I already know the outcome of the story...or, are they so good that it doesn't matter?

It sort of sits in the middle of old school TV where the seasons/episodes dont need to be watched in order and newer premium type shows that build each episode towards a finale.
If you loved season 3-6 I dont know why you wouldn't watch the first two seasons. I haven't watched the show since it aired but I cant imagine how watching older seasons would reduce the enjoyment you've had from the remaining seasons. But seriously though, do you really need this thread to tell you whether or not to watch it? Fire it up and if you like it, keep going, if you dont, shut it off. Season 1 aired nearly a decade ago, so you wont be missing water cooler convos if you skip it.

Season 2 was the best of the series, so yeah you are missing out.
As far as other character development -- while much of the first season is a "story of the week" type thing, you get to see characters develop relationships with one another that make the latter seasons much more significant. I mean, the overall arch of the entire series is Raylan/Boyd, and the first time we see them "work together" in present day is the S1 finale, so it's fairly significant in understanding why Raylan wants to put Boyd away but doesn't want to kill him.

Yeah, Season 1 took a bit to get going. But once it did, it never looked back. Season 2 and beyond were great. I agree about Mags. She was a GREAT character. So was the BBQ dude in the holler (cant remember his name).
One of the main writers listens to The Ticket regularly(radio station in Dallas). Many of the characters names (or names they'd mention in passing) came from Ticket on-air radio guys. TC fleming, Ty Walker, Sea Bass, Jake, Rhyner the Plumber, Bob Sturm, etc...all guys from the radio station.
Several lines came from them too.
Dewey's line, 'The Anus is on you' came from one of the radio hosts using that phrase wrong on air.
Pretty funny to find all those easter eggs in Justified if you listen to that station.
