Knowing I'll get crucified for this, but I thought season 6 was the weakest (other than the last episode, the ending was awesome). I didn't like Sam Elliott in the role he had, and I never could stand Mary Steenburgen, so that may have clouded my judgement.

I thought one of the most interesting side characters in the show was Wynn Duffy. A great combination of smarmy and psychotic.

I felt like Sam Elliot could have been AWESOME on that show. And they gave him such a bland role. Wasted opportunity IMO.

I don't hate the last season, but I did hate the character, Boon.

Season 6 was ok. Wasnt the best, wasnt the worst. Seemed more like they were trying to tie off loose ends, and the Sam Elliott story was also happening in the background.

Wynn Duffy was great.

Watch Deadwood

Not to derail but I just started Deadwood this week. Three episodes in and I'm already a big fan.

Carry on

Awesome! I've never personally encountered someone that started Deadwood and didn't immediately like it.

I have. I can understand the opinion for folks who dont take as much time to appreciate set, writing, character development etc. For some that's well down the totem pole of needs to get hooked.

I initially thought I hated Boone, but by the final showdown with Raylan I realized that he was great as a very cool and calm psychopath. The duel was incredibly tense.

That Raylan ended up keeping and wearing his hat in the epilogue was a nice touch.

Justified was a great show. Watched it "live" back in the day and had to wait each week for new episode and each year for a new season. May have to go back and binge watch since it's been a long time.

Absolutely. There are so many great characters and scenes in that series.

One of my favorite scenes is after Nicky Augustine kidnaps Winona and then later Raylan sets him up for Sammy Tonin's guys to gun him down in his limo at the airport. A couple of guys with silenced MP5s or some such. Raylon walks away as mayhem happens behind him...brrrp,...brrrrp. brrrrp...brrrrp. Excellent.

One of many great scenes.

Dear Lord, before we eat this meal we ask forgiveness for our sins, especially Boyd who blew up a black church with a rocket launcher and afterwards he shot his associate Jared Hale in the back of the head out on Tate's Creek Bridge. Let the image of Jared's brain matter on that windshield not dampen our appetites, but may the knowledge of Boyd's past sins help guide these men. May this food provide them with all the nourishment they need. But, if it does not, may they find comfort in knowing that the United States Marshal Service is offering $50,000 dollars to any individual providing information that will put Boyd back in prison. Cash or check, we can make it out to them. Or to Jesus. Whoever they want. In your name, we pray. Amen.

Deputy, are you accusing me of being a fake blond? Because if you need me to prove it to you, I might be inclined to break you over that step ladder, ride you down like a teaser pony, and paint this room an entirely different color.

Not a troll. I've invested time in 2 seasons in the middle of the series, finally realizing I'm just halfway thru the series. I have extremely poor internet. I'm not going back to S1 to catch up with S6. I'll finish S6 then go back.

True, it's got a 97% on RT.

Although...I just don't remember hearing many friends talking about it so it was never really on my radar. Might be somewhat underrated by the public.

Justified is my favorite show of at least the last 10 years. Probably more.

I think it was a show where star power was actually a detriment. Whether the 2 you reference, Rappaport, or the guy that played Champ in anchorman. The show was at its best when you didn't have any preconceived notions about any of the cast.

This thread needs more love for Alro and Art.

They're like good dad bad dad for Raylan and both keep his head straight in rather different ways.

Also always thought more or less needed to be done with Loretta, they just sorta insert her randomly after she's given to a foster home and don't flesh out that story as much as they should've imo

I have thought that would have a better option to explore for a father-daughter relationship with Raylan. Natalie Zea/Winona's departure from the show hurt the dynamic that Raylan had for a family story even though it provided some small contributions to the character. Sure him having a baby changed things slightly, but it felt like most of that was hollow in development because of Winona leaving.

So, I'd have been in favor of Loretta eventually choosing to stick to Raylan and having an interesting almost legacy style story of Raylan since Mags was kind of her Arlo in some ways and Raylan could have been her Art, where she decided to legitimize her efforts and fulfill Mags' void. Just hopefully with less violence and corruption.

The show, at its core, was about Raylan and Boyd. Every scene with dialogue between them is what made it so great for me.

110% would've been better if becoming somewhat of a father figure for Loretta was Raylans family redemption arc instead of the mess we get about the baby.

Let him and Winona have their little attempt at rekindling, it go south and then Raylan looks out for Loretta to show that he's not just his dad/can't get his head off work.

just finished the series a couple of weeks ago, the dialogue was just outstanding, never a dull moment. Boyd, Dickie, Raylan are such good characters.

I loved the show. dewey crowe was one of my favorite characters on the series. My only complaint was Rapaports terrible attempt at a southern accent. Made me cringe.

It turned into that, but it wasn't planned.

Quote:

  • Boyd was originally supposed to die in the series premiere episode, "Fire in the Hole", after being shot by Raylan, just as he did in the short story the pilot was adapted from. Actor Walton Goggins had originally agreed to appear on Justified as a favor to his friend, Timothy Olyphant. However, Boyd had positive reception from the test audience, so he ended up surviving the shooting in the next episode of the first season, "Riverbrook", and became a recurring character during the first season before becoming one of the lead roles for Season 2 onwards.

Seems the fandom is incredibly strong in this thread, so I assume this question/opinion will get skewered, but are the first three or four episodes good representations of the show? I found them terribly cliche, trite, and on the nose.

No. It took a half season to find its footing and really started rolling season 2 and beyond.

Re-watching the show with the significant other and I was trying to kind of prepare her for the letdown after the magnificent Bennett-clan season, but I had forgotten just how solid the next season was. Just great dialogue from all different walks of life (Limehouse, Quarles... Duffy shifting from a guy near the top of the totem pole to a guy just trying to cut out his own piece of the pie)... and probably the best season finale of the series -- even better than the Bennett finale IMO.

But alas... now comes the Rappaport season. I'm trying to remember if there's anything redeeming about this season at all outside of Dewey Crowe.
