At the very first Academy Awards in 1929 there was a category for Best Picture, Unique and Artistic Production. The winner was SUNRISE, a silent film. The next year they had just Best Picture.

All of this goes to point out how irrelevant these awards are (although I'll admit to watching it every year. IMHO either DUNKIRK or THE DARKEST HOUR should have won, but what is the common denominator between, say, LADY BIRD and THE SHAPE OF WATER to have them in competition with each other? It's like an Olympic event between one weight lifter, one high jumper, one swimmer, and one man who juggles chainsaws.

What if the Oscars were like the March Madness Selection show. They (hosts) just move from category to category, maybe spending a few minutes discussing the nominations, and then give the winner with some "analysis", before moving on to the next category. No one comes up to give a speech, and it's done in about 90 minutes.

Pretty much along the same lines as what's already been said: So instead of addressing the problem of not rewarding very good movies that people actually like and go see in the Best Picture category, they come up with this. Dumb.

-Best Picture Sold to Netflix to Recoup Costs Before It Bombx at the Box Office

This thread just made me realize how mind numbing the debate it going to be, year after year. Oscar pundits debating who made it in and who was left out is one thing. But Lord help us when when it's hard core Star Wars Fans, Marvel fans, and DC fans not only arguing amongst themselves, but raising a stink in the broader conversations, creating petitions, etc.

Ultimately what if a really popular film is truly the best film of the year. Are they less willing to give it Best Picture because it is already taking home Best Popular Film? This is a pretty stupid move.

I feel like this is almost a way to head off giving Best Picture to Black Panther or avoid any type of backlash if they don't.
