It was honestly meant as both.

It will be real interesting to see how well black panther plays this weekend given that the Olympics are going on. While Marvel movies do well overseas, many of the markets that are opening this weekend will be in countries that also have a high interest in the Olympics, which is likely to depress opening weekend grosses overseas.

In the US it should have a pretty good turnout especially among African-Americans since there's a lot of hype for it. But it is not a coincidence that three of the larger markets - Russia, China, Japan - are delaying the opening until after the Olympics unlike 70% of the rest of the marketplace. The reason for that is because this is a predominantly black movie and those don't play well in those three countries, so Disney is looking to maximize revenues by releasing it when there are less distractions.

When I first saw Black Panther in Civil War, I was excited for this movie. I feel like I've been waiting forever. Not because he's black, but because I think the character is cool and the world of the comic book is unique.

I am not black, but I'd have to think that it's probably a really cool thing for a young black kid to go see a MCU movie and see a legit leading superhero (and majority of the cast) on screen that are black, confident, and kicking ass. Just like it would be cool for any white kid to see the same thing for any other MCU movie. And on top of that everything that I've seen about this movie indicates that it's going to be quite good.

So ultimately who cares? I will watch the hell out of this movie, and I hope that other people do as well. It's just a comic book movie.

I think to some it's just a comic book movie and to others it has a lot of meaning, and if that's the case more power to them. There's never been anything wrong with a film being personally meaningful to someone before.

Totally agree. I am seeing the movie opening weekend. I'm very excited. If someone gets more out of it than I do, good for them! I could not care less. I just wanna see a good movie.

What I like about this movie is that someone actually finally took my advice.

I can't stand the whining. Not enough blacks in this movie. Not enough browns in that movie. No blacks nominated for an Oscar. This movie is too white. Blah, blah, blah. STFU already and go make a movie that fits whatever mold or message you want to see and convey.

Well, they did.

A lot of people are coordinating outfits and will be uploading pics to Twitter and Instagram. If you choose to be an Ally, once again the best places for coordination are #blacktwitter and #blackpantherchallenge. At the latter, you will also find information to donate tickets for schools.

Not sure why you are sighing. I clearly stated I'm looking forward to this movie.
No one will be allowed to even think anything negative about this movie.

As I stated earlier, I also really enjoyed Black Panther's introduction in Civil War and am really looking forward to this movie. But not because of some off-screen statement this movie might be making. I don't give a crap about any of that. I happen to think the character is awesome and just expect a good movie centered on BP. The "give it a rest" and "sigh" comments are going to come with this movie, as are the statements that are far more racially offensive and hateful. I'm going to ignore that crap as much as I can but if that stuff is in the movie, then it will be impossible to ignore. And I'll likely hate the movie for that. Just tell us a good story that lives up to Marvel's standards, and let all that other garbage alone.

The disturbing nature of the discourse on the Politics board came up on a R&P thread today (since deleted)

I'll say what I said there: the politics board has always been right wing culture wars and conspiracy theories, but up until the spring of 2016 it was more or less mainstream conservative kinds of arguments. Since then it's been taken over by alt right trolls. Texags gets at lot of pub as being the de facto internet home of Texas A&M. The politics board is a really bad look for all of us.
Meh. There are trolls on both sides. If I had a dollar for every Trump/Hitler comparison or Russian conspiracy post I've seen over there. It's gotten ridiculous. And there was plenty of leftist gloating on there when Obama won.

It's a message board...there are going to be loud opinions from both sides claiming to never be wrong.

Still quite tame compared to what I've seen on Tiger Droppings or reddit.

The New York Times posted a story questioning whether white kids wearing Black Panther masks I cultural appropriation..

It is not just the "right" making this political.

That is a non-sensical question that should never have been asked.

There is a difference between Black Panther and those other characters though. One is a character where being black is central to the character's storyline while the others are just superheroes that happen to be black. You could change Blade, War Machine and Falcon to white characters and it wouldn't really change the character much. Not to mention, Blade came before the rise of the superhero movie and the other two are basically just sidekicks to Captain America and Iron Man. I can see why this is a much bigger deal to black people and why they would latch on to it more.
