The best part of the Hobbit was the dwarves singing the Misty Mountains song. The trilogy went down here from there.

But it wasnt nearly as a good as "wheres there's a whip, theres a way" from the animated version

The guy who voices Gandalf in that movie is my definitive Gandalf.

Horns! Great horns of the north wildly blowing!
Theoden and the rescuing armies of Rohan had come at last!

Looking at 5 female actors. If we're clinging to the books I'd bet on Galadriel, Celebrian and Miriel, with the others new characters made for the show.

The obvious plot to put in is the Fall of Numenor and the Last Alliance. But I still wonder how far back they'll go. And I doubt they'd skip showing Celebrimbor and the destruction of Hollin.

Do they have rights to use all the elves? Even so, you run into a bit of a prequel problem if you have a bunch of characters that everyone knows are still around a 1000 years later

Right. We know the elves live forever(ish)

The point is that any character we know from later movies can't die in this show. And has to act a certain way in this show that matches their later story. Tolkien make a huge world which is great because there are connections in theme over the ages, but not always connected stories. So we really don't need any characters that we've seen before.

But some of the characters are very different in the Second Age. In LOTR, Galadriel has had millennia to reflect on her own hubris and her desire to become a great queen, allowing her to reject the Ruling Ring when it was offered to her. Galadriel in the Second Age should be different: She should be someone who is eager for power and ambitious, who is still under the Ban of the Valar for her role in the rebellion of the Noldor. Thematically, she should be an enthusiastic proponent of the Ring project or at the least the goals behind the Ring project, but not of Annatar.

If I was writing the script, I'd work in some measure of a political rivalry between her and Gil-Galad: She is an elder member of the House of Finarfin and could make a claim to be the Queen of the Noldor in exile rather than Gil-Galad.

Likewise, During the second age Elrond is not a loremaster and a sage, but a warrior and general among the elves. LOTR said he was counted as mighty among elves and men, so let's see it. He, along with Isildur, was right there when Sauron was slain.

Thranduil is the son of Oropher, who hated the Noldor. His hatred of them led to most of his people being slaughtered at the Battle of Dagorlad during the War of the Last Alliance. Those feelings should have an effect on Thranduil.

We can take these characters who we know will survive yet make them interesting. The good news is that there are a **** ton of important elves who die: Gil Galad, Celebrimbor, the aforementioned Oropher.

I really hope they stick to LOTR canon with regards to who is from where. What was done to the Witcher is a travesty.

LOTR is very very specific about what people each group looks like and there is zero crossover. They better have explanations ready to go because I have already begun to see people assuming it's just going to be another diversity *******ization of a franchise.

Hopefully the Tolkien Estate maintains it's iron grip on the story and does not let them deviate at all.

No idea.

They've announced the cast, but not who they're playing.

As a matter of fact, we don't even know what period of the second age this series is covering. The Rings were forged about 1/3 of the way through the age, and a lot happens over the next 2,000 years.

Not exactly new news, but this thread hasn't been bumped in awhile. Can't wait for some Numenor orgies when Sauron takes over.
