I don't want to get too detailed - it's hard to know how much to share / not share at this point because this is a public forum - but I'll try to break it down in vague/simple terms...
- We partnered with another production company to acquire the rights to the book. That partner had already been trying to acquire the rights for a couple years when we came in and were able to provide the funding to do so.
- Our two companies then went out and found a third production company who could really help with the packaging of talent (writer, director, etc.) and then pay for the development of a pilot script. That process in and of itself took another year and a half or so.
- Now we write the script and then shop it to networks/studios, who will then acquire the rights from us. In exchange, we get a fee + credits.
- As for my role, I'm an executive producer. From here, I'll read a drafts of the pilot and can weigh in creatively with a note here or there if I feel so inclined, but my job now is to basically step back and just let the true visionaries/storytellers do their thing, then make a couple appearances on set once we're filming, but that's about it. Overall, there are FAR more experienced producers already on board who will handle the day-to-day of tried-and-true producing.
