I hear you, but the whole point was to have Liz invite Peter to HER party. I guess she could have invited him to Flash's party, but it wouldn't have had quite the same effect.

Maybe some of the "appeal" to this Flash is that he is a DJ? I don't get the whole DJ culture (because I'm an old), but kids eat that crap up.

Also, get off my lawn.

I guess it might help...but still, i think it was an egregious miscasting.

That's a super easy fix.

"Hey Flash, you're having that party right? Why don't you have Peter come and maybe he can invite Spiderman"

or

"I was hoping to see you at Flash's party" and then instead of Ned squealing the Spidey thing at her, he says that to Flash to get the invitation to the party.

If you're not going to make Flash physically imposing, I think he should at least be mentally. Make him the captain of the decathlon team and play up the conflict with him and peter as it relates to the team (Peter flaking out on the competition etc.). But you can't make him a short, fat, AND dumb.

I agree with that. It kinda ruins his whole "bully" thing when not only is Peter clearly better at him than Ac-Dec, the kid with the bell also makes fun of Flash for it. Being a bully only works if the other kids take your side too.

i dunno, what if flash posts on 4chan, and in the next installment, he threatens to dox peter? he can be the cyber bully.

I don't know if that's really true, most people don't actually like bullies but they get away with it because they're the bully. Giving in to peer pressure is one thing, but you never seen anyone sad that a bully got what they had coming.

Agreed. I thought the opening sequence with the home-made video was a lil clunky/cringey and lasted a bit too long. The high school dilemmas were fine but it felt like we were being bludgeoned over the head with inclusion ideals. Like, I could see the casting director checking off an ethnicity box with every character. That's not to say that's a bad thing, but it was certainly distracting.
I've read that they wanted to make it look like a school in Brooklyn would really look, and I think it's totally believable in that case. It is different from the comics, but outside of Flash (who I thought was a bit miscast but I can kinda get where they were going) I thought it worked really well.

And the opening sequence was exactly what a kid like Peter would do in that situation, I thought it was pitch perfect. It was kinda awkward and that was the point.

Quick points from reading articles, interviews, etc:

1) The diversity is something they wanted, but for realism's sake. I've never been to Queens but there's probably not a public school in NYC that is 90% white, and that's how the previous iterations were. (I'm assuming it's public)

Likewise, the poor ol' house that previous Aunt Maes had would have been million dollar homes in NYC today. A more modern, realistic representation of a single parent situation in NYC is this cruddy apartment.

2) I was never bullied by a 6'3 jock, but I knew plenty of preppy d-bags in AP classes that would try and make people look bad, even those who were smarter than them. That's this version of Flash Thompson. He looks like an actual rich kid, not 30 year old bully Joe Mangionello.

3) forgot my third point

Oh yeah:

3) supposedly they knew they wanted to do the Vulture dad twist and built the movie from there. Whether that's true or not, or whether it felt natural enough or not, is certainly up to each viewer. But allegedly that was a twist they always wanted.

That's fine, but it was just something that I couldn't help but feel distracted by. I admit it's a smaller point (and probably a 'me-thing') that didn't really matter in terms of the movie's quality. Again, don't care that he's not white...but in what world (fictional or otherwise) could anyone take that guy seriously enough to feel intimidated or bullied? As someone else said, a bullies power isn't necessarily in his strength but in his popularity with other students. It didn't seem like anyone sided with this Flash. In fact they just made fun of him. The portrayal of this Flash was like HE was the loser outcast and Peter was the one everyone liked.

what i thought was odd was that tony sold Avengers tower. I can understand him moving all the Avengers gear upstate, but that was Stark Tower, I'm sure there's all kinds of proprietary tech running that building (they even mention in the 1st avengers, that the building would be self-sustaining, it's why Loki built the portal over it).

They still could've had moving day, without actually selling off the tower.

******

Also, i thought they should've added another mid credit scene at the prison, with Vulture, Hammer, and possibly Trevor Slattery (The Mandarin). With Hammer's resources, and Vulture's experience and willingness to get his hands dirty, they could be a formidable force if they teamed up.

So what racial makeup would you have for an academic decathalon team at a STEM school in Brooklyn?
Quote:

According to the 2010 Census, 35.7% of the population was non-Hispanic White, 31.9% non-Hispanic Black or African American, 10.4% non-Hispanic Asian, 0.4% from some other race (non-Hispanic) and 1.6% of two or more races (non-Hispanic). 19.8% of Brooklyn's population was of Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin (they may be of any race).

lol alright, white flag. You win. I won't mention it again as it really doesn't matter one way or the other.

Still think the Flash casting sucked.

I watched the cartoon after school everyday as a kid. This was by far my favorite Spider-Man movie yet, and they opened up the door to more villains without overpopulating it the way previous SM movies did.

I just think it was pretty spot on if they're trying to show what a school like that really looked like.

I didn't like Flash's casting either, as I mentioned, I get what they were trying to do but don't think it quite worked.

Why do people get so upset when there are minorities cast in these roles? A great movie and this is what bothers you?

That's fine, but when it looks like the characters are a teen version of the United Nations, it's a bit heavy handed. I'm not saying everyone should have been white, but they didn't need to cover the rainbow. Go 75% all black or Asian for all I care, it was just something that I couldn't help but feel distracted by. I admit it's a smaller point (and probably a 'me-thing') that didn't really matter in terms of the movie's quality...until Flash showed up. Right! And regarding 100% fictional characters. It's not as if these are real historical figures.

It's really, really weird. And super transparent. I can't imagine letting the racial make-up of a superhero movie bother me to any degree. Who ******* cares if "MJ" is black, white, Hispanic or Asain? And there can't be "too many" different races in a school in freaking Queens, New York. Have some of you ever even been to New York?

I've been to NYC several times. Specifically Queens, as well.

There can't be a more diverse place on Earth. If you want to be realistic (at all) you have to reflect that. Or would people rather it be like Friends or Seinfeld where they live in NYC and you see 3 black or Latino people in over a decade on the air? LOL crazy.

lol im assuming this is directed at me. I'm not upset at all and have stated as such numerous times. I really don't care what race any of the characters are and probably shouldn't have even mentioned it because it seems to have incinerated anything else I've said about the film. I was simply trying to draw a parallel to the diverse cast to the portrayal of Flash, which I can objectively say was not a good choice imo. I had wondered if in a their effort to be as inclusive as possible, they missed the mark on a character that is supposed to be a bully to Peter. Not some DJ Khaled wannabe dweeb. That's all I'm trying to say.

No, I actually haven't. Again, I wasn't upset or bothered at all by the cast...it wasn't until Flash showed up that made me go 'hmmm really?' That was distracting. Again, not bothersome or offensive. It was distracting. The guy they hired to portray Peter's high school tormenter was a guy that couldn't be any further from intimidating. Feel free to comment on anything else I've said about the movie.

I think we've given Flash Thompson more time in this thread alone than he's gotten in 3 entire films.

I didn't mind that Flash was Pakistani. I was bothered that Flash was a geek.

Flash is supposed to be a physical bully that beat up Peter Parker before he was Spiderman, so Peter has pretend to be physically intimidated by Flash in order to not reveal his identity.

But just go ahead and call everyone racist

It's because he was casted wrong and was the complete opposite of his comic book character which has nothing to do with his skin color

If the guy who created the characters is OK with the casting, maybe y 'all should reevaluate what makes the character right or wrong. If you want the same damn thing that was done before, just pick up the dvd for the first movie, read a comic, or watch the one of the several animated series.

Heaven forbid someone give a new take on the characters more in line with 2017.

Geez folks, I don't think anyone is calling anyone else racist because they didn't like the direction they went with Flash.
