Loving the episode today. I hope June slits Serena's throat while she's sleeping.

I watched it, and it is actually good if you like dystopian futuristic stuff.

However, I can see how the libtards coopting it for their own purposes would be a turnoff.

Okay, here's the deal.

The book is a good book.

It is a dystopian novel written in the 80s. 30+ years later, Hulu came out with a series, DT got the republican nomination, and suddenly a bunch of alarmist limp-wristed effeminates decided it was a "prefect metaphor" for whatever slippery slope dumb-assery they thought DT would lead to. They thought they were super original by dressing up like the show and showing up to disrupt political rallies or procedures. They were so hip, so educated, so edgy, so politically astute.

Idiots.

I read the book before it gained popular-political attention. I thought it was captivating and well written and imaginative. I like her weird visions and portrayals. She does some great satire in Oryx and Crake, even more of a rip on our cultural habits and customs than in THT.

If you want to hate it because a bunch of idiot libs with no creativity glommed onto it to push a political agenda, fine. But the book is better that ALL of the idiots using it now for political tinder.

Atwood is kind of weird. I like her literary weirdness.

But realize the dumb-asses parading around in red dresses and white hats never had an original idea in their lives, let alone one that could be plundered 30+ years later for some whimpy alarmist political victim grand-standing..

Read the book. Decide for yourself.

Rant over.

Carry on.

I'm enjoying the show. It's terrifying, especially in light of the fact that, in many parts of the world, it's not far from reality.

Pretty much this. Once Halloween gets here and we're treated to a bunch of sexy handmaid costumes, the whole thing will get co-opted from the radlibs and it will go away.

I may or may not have searched for porn related to Handmaid's. Couldn't find any yet; I think the porn industry is missing a big chance here.

I think the problem with this novel is that it doesn't show any meaningful trends that could possibly lead to that future dystopian state. Because it's not believable, it doesn't serve as a very good critique on modern society. It may be well written, but it can hardly be compared with books like 1984 or even shows like Black Mirror. I'll have to watch the show. Maybe it's just for entertainment like the Hunger Games?

It did sort of foreshadow things starting to get bad, before the **** really started to go down. And she mentions a lot about how she didn't realize it at the time, but looking back she should have known, etc.

I'm watching now based on the Emmy and am essentially with Count. Admittedly I'm only one episode in, but there are a whole bunch of things I just don't get:

Why do the Handmaids/surrogates live with the family?

Wouldn't procreation be more effective if the Handmaids were kept in constant hospital care with their cycle monitored for peak fertility?

Why do the Martha's hate the Handmaids? Both are oppressed and they don't get raped.

What US religious model that could possibly take over holds out beliefs like this?

They are infertile usually and will never get to have sex, have children, etc.
Once they get remotely old, they are sent away to the Colonies. If a Handmaid has a child for the couple, her life becomes easier and she cannot be sent away. She has done her Godly duty. The Marthas never have that chance.

Of all the religions out there with ability to "take over" America, I can see Islam being the most likely to cause a dystopian change in society like this.

Didn't say it would. Just said it could.

Agree. I find Season 2 a bit tedious so far.

Like the scene of her cutting her ear. Gruesome. Plus she's in what appears to be an abandoned car shop with tools everywhere, plus her boyfriend who is an Eye and might know how to take them off, but her first reaction is just to cut her ear. ugh!

Hated the end of episode 3. I am so ready for her to escape and be out of there and get that approach going.

The Season 2: Ep. 5 - child bride ceremony had some serious creep factor to it. I half expected to see June's daughter underneath one of the veils.

I'm into episode 8 of season 1. Read the book and love the series.

It would be awesome if people could just watch the show for its entertainment value.

Yeah... I enjoyed the first season quite a bit.

Absurd premise of this thing notwithstanding, the part about season 2 that's pissing me off, fertile women (as was thoroughly explained in season 1) are essentially Gilead's most valuable commodity. And yet, throughout season 2, we've been repeatedly fed the narrative that these women are completely expendable. It's a complete contradiction.

Bump for Season 3

Watched the first 2 episodes. They definitely wrote themselves into a corner with the finale of Season 2 and so far it shows in Season 3.

I still enjoy the show but it has lost a lot of the subtlety of Season 1 where things just were and now it's very much in your face in an effort to make sure you catch what the writers are trying to show you.

Bump for Season 3 Finale

Overall I thought this was a weak season. Thirteen episodes and six of them felt like throwaways. What happened to Nick? I know he is supposed to be in Chicago but did they write him out of the show?

Finale: If Gilead was considering going to war over the return one baby, what will they do for 50+ kids?
Jim01

Agreed. Half the season could have been cut and NOTHING would have been missed or changed.

Even the finale I used the "Jump Forward 10 Seconds" button a lot. Like them walking through the woods for 2 minutes set to moody music. Come on. This show meanders around too much.

It needs one final season and no more. Wrap it up.

I concur

lets not forget the episode where she was on her knees at the hospital the WHOLE DAMN EPISODE. You talk about skipping 10 seconds as much as possible.

The last two episodes were decent but there were plenty of lulls throughout the season. Its like they were just happy to get renewed and want to drag it out as much as possible for views/ratings.

Couple of finale moments that got me in different ways:
1) When June got the guard to give the all clear, thanked him, and then ended him (hell yea!)
2) When they land and the little girl June had pointed the gun out finds her dad (got a little dusty)

I tried to read it and watch it but it never really captivated me. I liked a lot of older dystopian novels, but this one reads like a totalitarian wet dream with too many fakes but could be realistic things.

We're about 8 episodes into season 3 and this season is driving me nuts. Every five minutes is a close up of Peggy's face looking sad/mad with a monologue in the background followed by some kind of clashing music that should be ironic.

I think they feel like some of the shots are much more shocking and jarring than they really are based on how long they stay on one shot. They made the Washington Monument a cross, got it. Move on.

Bump for Season 4 Teaser Trailer.

I'm not sure what the point of having an unmanned mounted .50 cal is but I'm glad will be seeing more of an actual resistance.

This show has gotten worse with each season. So far season 5 is about Serena vs June. Basically it's developed into a less interesting version of Rhodes vs Axelrod from Billions.

I think I'm gonna have to bail on the rest of this one.
