I'm a big X-Men fan, and absolutely loved X1 and X2. X3 was maybe my first massive movie letdown. Matrix Reloaded was bad, but not as disappointing as X-3.

I loved Days of Future Past, but I thought Apocalypse was a pretty big fail all around. It's a mildly entertaining movie, but adheres to the early-2000s formula in a big way. Turning fan-favorites into generic bodyguards (Archangel, Psylocke), everyone uses their powers at the same time to shoot lasers at the villain, an unnecessarily large cast of characters who don't get enough screen time, rampant destruction with no repercussions (I'm pretty sure Magneto destroyed Australia but he walks away scot-free), etc. This was the year where BvS and Civil War dealt with repercussions of superhero battles, btw, and Apocalypse just bulldozed through like it's nothing. Also, half-assed Jennifer Lawrence performance.

It's just a little sad, in a way. The X-Men cartoon had sprawling sagas and story arcs. You got to know the main cast well, but you also had episodes that brought in fan-favorites like Nightcrawler, Colossus, Iceman. Then in 2000, X-Men was at the forefront of the first superhero movie boom, and you got to see these characters brought to life on the big screen... even if your favorite characters never got enough focus (Cyclops) or weren't very accurate to the source material (Rogue).

But now, they're so far behind the times. They had a soft reboot halfway through, as well, so I'm not even used to seeing Sophie Turner as Jean Grey. The rest of the Marvel universe has a plan, but these guys are just kind of playing out the string, going through the same motions and waiting to be cancelled and rebooted into a better-planned universe a few years down the road. So I'm just ready to get it over with.

well said.

I dislike the JLaw show, partly because I hate when the actor becomes more important than the actor (Mystique should be blue, Cap should wear a cowl, Natasha should have red hair, etc).

While McAvoy & Fassbender have been enjoyable, the movies ignore the source material too much and the movies are enjoyable but average.

So ready for the MCU to take over.

I don't know how to break this to you, but... these movies haven't been good for a while now. They don't make a lick of sense, all continuity has been thrown out the window, and the characters haven't really aged in like 30 years in-universe. I'm sooooo glad this is the last one. It's like having to endure a bland version of Batman & Robin, knowing that Batman Begins is just around the corner (when Marvel takes over - and yes, I realize the metaphor is getting lost in the studio criss-cross).

You didn't think X-Men first class or Days of Future Past were good?
I loved First Class. Days of Future Past was good, but a definite step down for me. Apocalypse felt like old xmen movies that became weak.

Looking at IMDB, I notice First Class has a different director and Singer did the others.

Didn't the Apocalypse post credit scene show that Mr Sinister would be the villain in the next film?

That's because it was Matthew Vaughan that did First Class.

Hinted at it. He was going to be the villain for The New Mutants, played by Jon Hamm, but something didn't work out. I wonder if we ever get to see that movie.

They sort of fulfilled that in Logan, right? The clone of Logan, and of course X23, being presumably created with the DNA taken in Apocalypse?

Brett Ratner did X-3.

I always thought Singer made the good ones, 'til Apocalypse came out. Not a huge fan of First Class.

Pretty much doesn't matter anymore as Singer is now toxic.

That is not a bad trailer at all! I don't like the post-title clip being a spooky action-y sequence, but other than that, it's better than the U.S. version.

That said, I still don't have any connection to any of these characters (except Xavier and Magneto). Most of them have only shown up once, which makes this essentially just a sequel to Apocalypse (nobody's favorite) instead of the 10th movie in a franchise. So I see Storm and go "oh yeah, Storm was in that last one" instead of any kind of recognition or excitement.

That applies to Beast, too, and this is his 4th appearance with this actor (5th overall). Just nothin'.

This is the first X-Men film since Wolverine Origins that I'm straight up not planning on seeing, but we'll see if reviews sway me at all.

Soooooooo.........Jean Grey only turns into Dark Phoenix because of some extra-terrestrial entity/floating space cloud that flows through her in space?

Yeah, no.

And I still can't get over that the writers just don't give a sh*t at all about the passage of time in these movies. Seriously, none of the characters except Jean and Scott have aged in any of these movies that began in the 1960's.

They. Just. Don't. Care.

I'm not super well versed in it, but I think that comes from the source material.

Source material. Phoenix is a cosmic entity that many thought would be the key possibility to uniting X-men and the MCU. Doubt it happens but they do have that option.

You are correct. Uncanny X-Men 101 is the start of the Phoenix Saga/Dark Phoenix over about 30 something issues of the comic. Here is the synopsis from wiki:

Quote:

During an emergency mission in space, the X-Men find their shuttle damaged. Jean pilots the shuttle back to Earth, but is exposed to fatal levels of radiation. Dying, but determined to save Cyclops and her friends, Jean calls out for help and is answered by the cosmic entity, the Phoenix Force ...

"The Dark Phoenix Saga part of the plot": During "The Dark Phoenix Saga", Phoenix becomes overwhelmed and corrupted by her first taste of evil and transforms into a force of total destruction, called "Dark Phoenix", consuming a star, inadvertently killing the inhabitants of the star's planetary system, and jeopardizing the entire universe. However, Jean's personality manages to take control and Phoenix commits suicide to ensure the universe's safety
The Dark Phoenix Saga also has "Tie-ins to other Marvel characters": notably the Kree and the Skrull, which are the basis of the Captain Marvel movie being released this weekend. Will be interesting if there is any crossover or mentions that point over to Dark Phoenix now that Disney is taking control of Fox

From what I can tell from this trailer and a couple of early interviews, this one is playing much closer to the source material. In the previous movies, the producers had said they didn't think the audience would buy in to the outer space parts so they radically rewrote things for X2/X3. Lots of hard core fans were disappointed if not downright pissed because this is one of the most popular plots of the series.

That's right. I forgot the "explanation" for her return in "X Factor" #1. Some cosmic entity visits her as she's piloting the doomed shuttle to Earth and offers to save the rest of the X-Men if she will give herself to it. The entity takes Jean's form and becomes Phoenix while her body was in a cocoon at the bottom of the New York Harbor in the wreckage. She wakes up about 10 years later and her, Scott, Beast and Angel become X Factor.

I forgot about that plot line.

Imdb says that is Jessica Chastain but not who she is playing. Imdb also says Daniel Cudmore is in the movie so hopefully he will be reprising Colossus.

I bet this is what eventually happens. Maybe they go super limited release in theaters. Maybe push it to the general timeframe of Halloween to try and push it as a body horror movie?

The New Mutants is being pushed back again for the 4th time to April 3, 2020 now. It will still see a theatrical release and will end the Fox's X-Men series.
