I'm on book 5 of the J.N. Chaney series "Renegade Star". I have really enjoyed it. Just a lot of fun and a great adventure traveling through space.

"bookmarking"

Recent decent books that I liked:

"Beneath A Scarlet Sky," Mark Sullivan chronicles the life of Pino Lella, a 17-year-old boy who grew into a man during the last years of World War II.

The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August

Currently reading Quantum Time. It's the third (really the 4th) in a series by Douglas Phillips. Really good stuff dealing with the absolute weirdness of the quantum universe, multiple dimensions, aliens, etc..

Just re-read the Forever War recently and decided to pick up the sequel Forever Free. Different type of story than the original with some random bits at the end that apparently pissed some people off. Still has overall good reviews though.

I also recently read The Library at Mount Char. Not really fantasy or sci-fi, but somewhat related. Some label it as New Weird. Messed up at times, but I still enjoyed it overall.

I just finished the Broken Earth series by NK Jemisen on audiobook. Told from an interesting perspective about human-like beings who can control the ground/earth. They are feared and ostrasized by "normal" people but turn out to be the only ones who can save the world from "fifth seasons". Its a trilogy so not too long and fairly fast paced.

Kind of late in the day but if anyone reads Brian McClellan and his Powder Mage books, today is his birthday and he is giving away a novels from the series.

FINALLY.

Churned through the Mistborn trilogy. Not sure why it took me so long to get stuck in. Once I did though, I ended up devouring it. Finished all three in a few days.

I can recommend them.

Bump.

I recommend a series starting with Cephrael's Hand by Melissa McPhail. Only 5 of 7 books out so far but great series.

What other lesser known authors or series have you ladies and chaps come across?

Fan of David Welch. Most of his are availible on Amazon unlimited with Kindle. I buy them now to support. Chaos Quarter series is solid sf. Fireflyish, but not exaxtly. Like most all of his other stuff as well, only one so far that I didn't finish.

Recently took a nostalgic spin back through some of the Pern books. Classic solid stuff.

Raymond Feist has a new series out, 2 books so far. Solid as well.

Any new recs for space opera type series? Over the last couple years I've ready through Ender, Robot/Empire, Dune series, Silo, Teixcalaan series, Expanse and about to start the last Hyperion book. Before and during a lot of these I read Weir, Heinlein and Bradbury stand alone books.

Basically looking for another good series of sci fi books for the next couple months. Was leaning towards Red Rising, but open to other ideas.

If you want Space Opera try the Vorkisigan Saga.

I'm not sure if it qualifies as Space Opera, but I am a fan of The Hainish Cycle by Le Guin.

The Inheritance series by Paolini. It's easy reading but entertaining and there are 4-5 books. My son read them in elementary school. However, he was reading at a high school level. I listen to them because I wanted to know what it was that he was reading. Seemed very Lord of the Rings (there were elves, trolls, etc) but with dragon(s).

Right there with ya starting book 6 in Audio. On a separate note did this thread really go almost three years without a post? Are there more than one with the same subject because I feel like this topic comes up quite a bit? Or do the years just go that fast?

Hard to believe I started this thread 8 years ago!

I feel like I've read just about every recommendation out out there.

Can't wait for the new Dungeon Crawler Carl book, which has been my favorite series as of late.

Currently on book 3 of the Sun Eater series by Chris Ruocchio, I'm really liking it so far.

The Mars trilogy (Red Mars; Green Mars; Blue Mars) by Kim Stanley Robinson is pretty solid.

I'm a huge fan of Three-Body Problem trilogy

Isn't there one specific to Sanderson? It gets these refs too.

I didn't use that one since I view Fantasy and Sci-Fi pretty differently and this thread has more sci-fi stuff. I enjoy some fantasy stuff, but into the science/space aspect more than wizards/magic/dragon/etc stories.

I read both the Farseer Trilogy and Tawny Man Trilogy by Robin Hobbs over the last month. Talk about an emotional roller coaster. Fitz may be the most run through the mud main character I've ever seen in a book series. The dude had it rough. Even at the end of it all when he finally gets his happiness, it still felt bittersweet in a so many wasted years way.

Be sure to finish with the Fitz and the Fool series. It ain't over til it's over!
