Yep, that is a great series. I'm hopeful that the Thorn of Emberlain will finally get released this year.

Posted this another thread but it should go here. I started Too Like the Lightening by Ada Palmer and I'm 50/50 on it so far. Actually put it down and I'm reading Heir to the Empire instead. Not sure I like the writing style of the former. It's overly complex from a style perspective IMO. Anyway else read it?

I think I've posted on a previous recommendation thread, but I'm really interested in Generation Ship books. Does anyone have a good recommendation? I'm thinking of starting with Kim Stanley Robinson's Aurora.

Hmm. I guess not in the same arc, but I read 2312 by KSR and abandoned it. It was bad. I did like his Mars series back in day.

I realize this has little to do with your post.

All 3 Words of Radiance books by Brandon Sanderson (start with Way of Kings) are only $2.99 in ebook format until Nov 5th.

Apologies if this has been mentioned but The Elric Saga by Michael Moorcock is my favorite series. It introduces the anti-hero, Multiverse and Champion Eternal through his other heroes in other series such as The Chronicles of Corum and Erekose.

If Tolkein was British fairy tale then Moorcock was dark Norse mythos.

Kel Kade's King's Dark Tidings series has been entertaining. His writing definitely improves from the first book to the fourth.

about 2 hours into the 16 hour audiobook of Aurora,, seems well written, but, not much action yet, more just talking about life onboard so far

Sweet..Just ordered it. I've read the first 2, but hadn't gotten around to buying the 3rd. Glad I waited.

don't pick up aurora if you're looking for a generation ship book. too rambling and preachy, is an 'anti-scifi' novel

spoilers
SPOILERS

the characters in the book make it to the distant star, give up at the first sign of trouble and half decide to stay, half decide to come back to earth. never hear anymore from the folks that stay. alot of the second half of the book is the ship's computer talking to itself. ends with main character whining about space travel and being a beach bum

end spoilers

really, can't recommend aurora, not good, not what was advertised and expected

What are the books?

I see Way of Kings, what are the other two? Did you mean to say Stormlight Archive, and Words of Radiance and Oathbringer as 2 and 3?

Edit: I actually got Way of Kings on my Kindle a few years back, never got around to it! And I did more research and see that Stormlight and Words of Radiance are indeed #2 and #3. I was confused because the different prices on Amazon... Books 1 and 3 are $2.99, but 2 is $9.99.

Seeing as this thread is a couple years old, what is recommended for first time Sanderson reading? (I read WoT and really liked his work with the last few books there)

I finished The Name of the Wind by Rothfuss, and I have no idea why it's gotten such acclaim. First quarter of the book is alright, but after that it goes off the rails. Flat characters, meandering storylines, and poor dialogue. It needed a good editor to cull all the dead weight.

I would not recommend people spend their time on it.

If you liked WoT, and enjoy larger epic fantasy, then I would suggest going straight into the Stormlight Archive series. It is, in my opinion, the best high fantasy series currently going.

You could also start with Mistborn, which is outstanding as well. You'll be reading those for awhile, as there are two series within the same universe.

Or really jump into the Cosmere and read Elantris, War Breaker, the Emperor's Soul, and the Arcanum Unbounded. All of which are also in the universe.

Start with the first Mistborn series (The Final Empire, Well of Ascension, Hero of Ages). If you're wanting just a one-off book (or at least a book that doesnt have a sequel yet), try Warbreaker.

I'm currently reading Mistborn off and on. It's just ok. It sounds like Sanderson really didn't hit his stride until he finished WoT and the Stormlight Archive.

I'm a stickler for chronology so I started with his earlier works and they are average. Looking forward to getting past Mistborn so I can move on but starting the third one doesn't excite me. Just feel like I need to finish it.

I'm leaning towards just jumping in on the Stormlight Archives with Way of Kings.

After seeing a lot of talk on the Witcher thread, I picked up the series, starting with the short story anthologies. So far it's really good.

I never played the game, but a bunch of my buddies rave about it. Plus, I'm sure I'll watch the Netflix series when it comes out, so I need to be able to say "the book was much better"

Holy crap! Another money grab series of ten planned books and only 3 are out to date. GRRM is jealous.

At least Sanderson isn't fat and old. He puts out books like a machine.

Yep, it's not a money grab when you put out like he does. Only 3 books in and i still feel like we've only scratched the surface of the world he's built on Roshar.

Looks like he does one of these every 3 years.
So, next one will be out in 2020?

I'll stick to my belief that a complete story which can't be told in 5 or less books isn't worth telling.

Yes, I'll even say this applies to ASOAIF.

I took 2 classes from Dr Palmer while she was teaching at A&M, and she was by far the best professor I ever had. She's an incredible teacher and an undeniable genius - expert on medieval literature, Florentine history, the Renaissance, etc., especially how people interacted with books like Lucretius in medieval times. When I saw she had a book series coming out I was super excited, because she was my advisor on my senior research project on Asimov and I just knew whatever she wrote had to be great. So once the book was published, I found a copy on the shelf at the bookstore, read the first couple pages, thought "LOL, of COURSE this is the kind of crazy thing Ada wrote!", and then put it back and haven't read it.

Irony: I bought Way of Kings today because I remembered it was highly recommended here. However I forgot I was turned off by it because it would be starting another series less that's than halfway written. Oh well, I'll see how it goes after a Hobbit/LOTR re-read.

Three Body Problem (series composed of Three Body Problem [2015 Hugo Award winner], Dark Forest, and Death's End) by Cixin Liu

Terrific series by a Chinese writer. I won't go into the plot, but it's not what I expected from a Chinese Sci-Fi, and the second book manages to be even better. I'm still reading the third book (about 2/3 through) so I'm saving judgment on it, but so far each book has had its own unique and fascinating theme that evolve out of the story so well.
I just finished read the first book. It was so freaking good! Just started the second.
