I caught it last night and I really enjoyed it despite the mouth breathers laughing during critical parts and calling it bull ****. I guess we've become so desensitized to evil and horror that if its not torture porn, it's not scary.

I thought it a very scary movie and very well made.

Sigh. Once again, this isn't why a majority of viewers don't like it. The "If you didnt like it, you must be [negative stereotype]" argument is so tiring. I expect it on the politics board, but not here.

I thought this was one of the more disturbing movies I've seen. I wouldn't say I found it "scary" but that's not really the point - I found it a very uncomfortable experience. Not sure I could recommend this movie to most people.

**********spoilers*********

After the first witch bathed herself in the baby's blood, there was a shot of her back making what I guess were thrusting motions by a tree. What was going on there? I initially thought she was violating the corpse, but that seems like a line that even this movie wouldn't cross.

Oh yeah I kind of wondered what was going on there too.

********** WARNING SPOILER DISCUSSION BELOW **********

I interpreted it as Thomasina simply blaming the twins because they were blaming her. I got the impression that she never really liked them, and after Caleb died, she was basically just like "*****it" and was trying to save her own ass at that point. Then again, she genuinely did NOT want to be put in the animal pen with them, so it's hard to tell. But they all talked pretty casual with each other after that, just before the witch showed up, which is why I really do think Thomasina was just trying to convince her parents to save her own ass more than anything. And yeah, I figured the witch took them and killed them just like she killed the baby (I read in one review that the witch was using the baby fat to oil up her broom for flight - which is one of the most disturbing things I can imagine).

Finally - BP's voice will haunt me forever. Not showing him during that sequence was genius. That said, I couldn't quite tell what, exactly, put its arm around her when he kind of circled her in that scene. It sounded like leather when he moved, and I couldn't tell if he was still a goat in that moment or took on more demonic/Satan-type form.

There was a man standing behind her. You could see his black glove over her right shoulder and his face over her left shoulder. I asked my friend and she saw it too.

I find it interesting that people can say they don't find this movie scary and some think that in some way means they didn't "get" the film.

This was a movie that was a slow burn that relied a lot on atmosphere -- but this wasn't some heady film that many didn't get.

I don't even watch torture porn type stuff because I don't find it scary but I also have no desire to see it... but to even say this flick was on the level of The Conjuring in regards to scares... well I strongly disagree.I feel like what this movie individually did well was done better in other movies.

Saw it last night. Great movie. I kept thinking that this is what you would get if you mixed There Will Be Blood with witchcraft and the occult.

She covered the branch in the baby "remains" and uhh....well was sticking it in an intimate place. I think it had something to do with the witch's flight and broomstick.

Just got home from watching it. I didn't have too many problems either. I think people were annoyed by more so the dialogue heavy scenes or lots of stuff going on scenes...the dialogue was just one part of the story in those parts and I think that the on screen action and cinematography got all the points across in them. I didn't need to hear word for word what was being said in some instances.

My youngest believes in the Tooth Fairy. Word on the street is that she got hooked on crack. Which then lead to armed robbery and even murder.

I can genuinely say, I'm looking forward to this film in the future.

I saw it yesterday. It definitely is one of the better films I've seen in a while, regardless of genre. I enjoyed that scenes were allowed to develop without constant camera movement or abrupt angle changes. I also appreciated how almost all of the scenes were shot with only natural light or candle light.

Little late to the party but saw it last night and thought it was fantastic and have been thinking and processing it all morning. Just incredibly well done. Like TC I'm not a huge horror guy. The Witch wasn't scary to me but immensely creepy and unsettling.

Special thanks to Sapper and some other folks for the background, although not necessary to enjoy the Witch i think it enhanced my experience by walking in with the harshness of puritan beliefs and the cursedness of the wilderness in the back of my mind instead of trying to recall 5th grade history.

The accents were a little hard at first but I got the jist of it, looking forward to rewatching with subtitles. I thought all the kids were great (Caleb had a few moments that cringed and annoyed me but as one poster pointed out they were playing kids so a confused whiny 9 year old boy isn't far fetched and he definitely nailed his showcase scene)

That said I am still trying to decide if I can recommend this to anyone. It isn't a pretentiousness vs mouthbreather argument that this board always gets tangled up in for some reason. It's just such a particular beast in that it is very easily not enjoyable or interesting to even the most open minded and intelligent viewer. I had been trying to think of something to compare it with and i think HNIC nailed it saying it was There Will Be Blood like. You can't really recommend There Will Be Blood to people. They just kinda have to watch it for themselves and some will be in awe of it and some will feel it was a waste of time.

***Spoilers***
My interpretation is yes the twins and the girl were just blaming each other in the hysteria of the possession. However, the initial song the twins sing I think does mention something about Black Phillip being the king or ruler so maybe BP did at least influence the twins but I don't believe there was a covenant and that at the end more than likely the twins were also snatched up for flying broom oil.

Showing the witch at the beginning was brilliant IMO. Besides being creepy as Hell established the tone early that it wasn't gonna be a cop out maybe it was all in their heads ending or wasting the first two acts on is there or isn't there a witch.

So if I am reading the above descriptions correctly...in this movie, a witch sodomizes a dead baby with a tree branch? Or violates it in some way? When you add that to the fact that this movie was heavily endorsed and distributed by the Church of Satan, I think I'll pass. That's just too much, IMO. I could see how hipsters and liberals would love it though since it's so edgy and dark and in-your-face. To each his own.

I think that the witch just uses the fat from the baby to rub on her broom... I don't remember anything like you are describing.

Exactly. I don't know where he's getting some of that stuff. The witch kills a baby in order to use its fat for broom oil. That's it. Granted, that's not much better than what Guero was describing, but it's such a quick non-scene that I can't possibly imagine getting worked up about it.

Why would the Church if Satan (whatever that is) endorse this movie? If anything, it showed evil as a negative.

I don't know, I figured maybe because a Christian family is terrorized and murdered by agents of Satan in the movie?

1) Nobody gets sodomized
2) The shot is done in a very succinct way that leaves alot up to the viewer's interpretation. In a literal sense, nothing is explicitly shown or told in the movie that a baby was murdered and it's blood was used for broom oil. It's heavily implied, but not explicitly depicted.
3) Why are you still on this thread?

*An unbaptized baby. That's important to the ceremony. As a liberal hipster I know this first hand.

Kidding aside, as others have said there is no baby sodomy scene, but besides that you may be doing yourself a disservice. The Witch did a really great job of not mocking or looking down on the family's rigid Christian beliefs. It could've also easily made the patriarch a cliched fire and brimstone nutcase but instead he is a resolute devout man that adores his family and tries his best in the bleak situation. And finally, if anything I believe those with a more religious background as you appear to be would get an even better experience watching it. The themes and dread of damnation are more literal to you than it would to those without that background.

Of course I have no idea why I typed all that out when you probably have no intention of ever watching it.

I actually am very interested in seeing this movie, but this description from another poster "She covered the branch in the baby "remains" and uhh....well was sticking it in an intimate place.", combined with the film basically partnering with the Church of Satan, had me wondering whether I should see the movie, much less financially support it. I may pay for "Risen" and sneak into this one.

It's now become a running joke in our circle of friends. I dragged them all to The Witch telling them it's supposed to be one of the better horror movies of the last few years, and I'm lucky half of them didn't fall asleep.

Not a bad film by any meanings, very well filmed and acted... Just not scary, which is kind of important for a horror movie.

I saw this last night on ppv & enjoyed it... But it could have been better IMO. SPOILER ALERT!!

1. The fathers accent was extremely tough and I found myself struggling (as others have) to figure out what he said instead of absorbing the dialogue.

2. Some background to the Puritan belief system & their views on the wilderness could have been worked in to give more context. Maybe if the opening scene was a little more fleshed out.

3. More Black Phillip. How did they get him? More scenes of him with the twins. BP staring. BP wandering off into the woods. Etc. 5 more scattered minutes of screen time and he becomes much more menacing.

4. Maybe a little more "terror" from Thomasin at the end. A black goat that: 1. kills your father 2. talks back to you and 3. transformers into a man in front of your eyes - she doesn't freak out at all? A subtle scene and I liked it, but a little more emotion could have added to it. Maybe the idea was she was in shock and numb to it all.

5. Close ups of naked witches.

6. Maybe some interaction with other people besides family. They were not completely isolated.

JMO. Enjoyed the movie in general.
