Don't bother. If you see it for the first time as an adult, you'll think it's really stupid.
My wife, five years my junior, just told me it was great.

Return of the King may be the worst ending ever.
ending was FINE....it was the 20 minute epilogue that killed it.....
Quit complaining. Jackson could have easily turned that epilogue into a 4th film.

I've been a movie watcher since the late 1940s and these are some good endings I remember seeing.
Spoilers ahead!!!!
Love your list Fred even though Fargo is in North Dakota.
Best movie ending: "The Bridge on the River Kwai."
Spectacular explosion and train wreck as a climax. Plus, did Sir Alec Guinness (as the colonel) realize how mistaken his effort to so efficiently build the bridge was before he died, falling on the detonator......or not?
Most satisfying understated movie ending: "Fargo."
Prodigiously pregnant Marge, the police chief, shows she is smart, capable, brave and devoted to duty as she solves crime and faces violence in snowy South Dakota. Norm, her stay at home husband, cooks, keeps house and paints while she's on duty and she's always on call. After she completes working an involved and dangerous case, she waddles home late after a particularly eventful day and her husband's waiting up for her in bed. She gets in too. He mentions that his artwork has been chosen for a postage stamp and she is very proud. No discussion about the bad guys, the murders, the fraud, the arrests or those wh***s from the neighboring town. Using the broad Midwestern accent with which they speak. Simple, supportive and loving, Perfect. Ya.
Most surprising and iconic move ending: the original "Planet of the Apes" starring Charlton Heston.
After this whole movie takes place in a strange new world where apes talk and dominate over humans, the film ends with our manly hero riding horseback on a beach until he comes upon the ruin of the Statue of Liberty. Pretty good sci fi effects, story, exposition and finish for 1968.
Other memorable endings:
"Easy Rider."
"Seconds.''
"Rosemary's Baby."
"The African Queen."
"The Godfather."
"Night of the Living Dead, "original.
"The Wicker Man." original.
"Some Like It Hot."
"Chinatown."
"The Taking of Pelham One Two Three," original.
"Fight Club" with the Pixies' song.
"Shane."
"Invasion of the Body Snatchers," original.
"Sunset Boulevard."

Take it to the Boyhood thread. Ending was not a copout and I'm tired of people saying that.

I don't even have to name the movie, if you've seen it you'll recognize them right away...
