After seeing the movie, my one disappointment is they left the best non-whatney line out of the movie.

" What? you don't like Mexican?"
I was disappointed we didn't get the Aquaman comment too. That line made me laugh the hardest when reading the book.
its right here...

will probably be in the extra features on the DVD

Hard to say on which one to read or watch first... Reason i say that is that there is always disappointment after reading a book and watching the movie. I would read the book just because i rather it spoil the movie than the movie spoil the book if that makes sense.

For those who have read the book and seen the movie which do you think it the best one to do first?

I have the book but will that take away from a badass movie?

For me personally, I've found that it's easier to read something first because it's a bigger time commitment. Plus it's just harder to get into reading it once I've already watched it. I also enjoy creating the scenes in my head, and then seeing how the filmmakers interpreted them as opposed to the way I did.
I think my approach was the best. After I first saw the trailer, I went and got the audiobook. It was perfect because I could still create the scenes in my head but with basic info already filled in. For example, Mark was Matt Damon the whole time I listened to the audiobook so I'm not going to be disappointed that Damon was cast as the lead in the movie. Seeing a brief glimpse of some visuals (the habitat, suits, rover, etc.) helped create the world in my head and then I filled in the rest.

I just wish the text back to Earth, after learning everything was public record, had been shown in the film.
It was kind of left as an inside joke/not to those who had read the book, hence only a few folks laughed at that scene when I saw the movie.

I would have loved the tirade of Watney and the scientist when he was talking about their mothers and then sisters... but i like mom jokes

We walked out of the movie 2:15 hours into it. Boring. "Mr Fix It on Mars" would have been a better title or maybe "This Old Martian House".

Edited:Minutes to hours....sorry

2:15 minutes? you mean in the middle of the harrowing escape from mars in the middle of the storm? that was boring? ok.

I expect 2:15 was 2 hours and 15 minutes. During the harrowing escape from Mars.

The run time is only 2 hours and 21 minutes. Does that include credits?

Also disappointed that KAPOOR was not an Indian actor, even though Chiwetel Ejiofor did a superb job.
I read somewhere (maybe a hitfix interview?) that they had an Indian actor cast, but he had to back out at the last minute because of a Bollywood contract issue.

Gravity was more tense / edge-of-your seat, but on a purely entertainment level, I enjoyed The Martian more. The humor was a big part of that for me.

i tend to agree. gravity was more of a thrill-ride, but i'm glad it was only 90 minutes or so long.

Gravity is a movie that is great the first time you see it (as long as it was on the big screen) but don't have a real strong desire to ever watch again.

Literally everybody knows you count the walkout time from the time of the first preview. Not when the actual movie starts! Come on man!

I found Watney's Aquaman question quite though provoking. I mean, it's a totally valid point. Whales are mammals, if he can control them he should be able to control other mammals, like people.

I think the comic books got this wrong on porpoise.

Really enjoyed it. I like that the movie didn't shy away from the science involved in his situation and presented it in an interesting way.

Went tonight. Great movie, packed house with applause at the end. Interstellar was more original, but The Martian was more entertaining. I had read the book, but still was on the edge of my seat.

For the parents out there (very minor spoiler)...
My 12 year old had read the book too, so I took her and at the last minute I took my almost-10 year old too (she is pretty mature and "common sense media" said it was ok for 11 year olds). The horror movie previews before the movie are pretty hairy, so have them stay outside or cover their eyes/ears for that part. The movie itself was perfectly fine for kids if you don't mind a couple f-bombs. Only part that was remotely disturbing to them was a scene where he had to staple his own wound shut towards the beginning, that kinda dragged on a bit too long. Otherwise, they were transfixed the whole movie and loved it.

I saw it tonight. Great movie. It drags a bit about 1:45 in, but picks up at the end. I was a little distracted by the hottest NASA crew ever. Good actors, but it seemed too glamorous or something.

No sheet about the previews. My 11 year old looked like he was going to pee himself.

Good flick overall.

I loved the Martian scenery and the MacGyver-like improvisation that helped him stay alive.

I hated Kristen Wiig (dislike her generally and find her distracting in non-comedic roles). I also didn't like the casting of Jeff Daniels. Also generally I felt like they were trying to hard to make it a "feel good" movie with the disco music and frequent lighter moments. Personally I wanted the movie to be a little more like Apollo 13 and a little less like Guardians of the Galaxy.

Disco stuff was straight out of the book, and I'd say it was way more Apollo 13 than Guardians of the Galaxy.

Concur, but if you can imagine a spectrum where one end is guardians and the other is a13, Martian is about 70% of the way towards a13. I wanted it more like 85%.
