I am almost as excited about taking my 10 year old to this as I am Star Wars.

10?

He will be 11 by then, but Yeah?

Did you read the book? Probably a little mature for a 10 or 11 year old.

Yes. I read the book. What is too mature for him?

The cussing is what I was thinking of. Not judging, just double checking that UK was aware. By combining The Martian and Star Wars in the post it made me curious ...that is all. The first two lines of the book are enough to make me not take my kids. :-)

My kids are the same age and I take them to see stuff that is a little "iffy" as well, but not more than PG-13.

The movie wil be PG-13 and his mom cusses more on a daily basis.

Foul language to me is not a big deal. The whole theme of a man solving his problems, using his brain to survive, and the team rallying to save him is a very good theme for any child.

Frankly I hope every 10 year old in the country sees it. A few f bombs are a small price to pay for teaching kids about the joy of McGuyvering solutions when things stop working.

I guess I didn't realize it was only PG-13.

You and Jenn make good points. Hopefully the movie will stay true to a lot of that.

Rewatching the trailer, it still aggravates me on how much they've given away!

To what movie are you referring? Apollo 13?

Besides, I don't really give a damn if an idea is new as long as it's a well-made film.

Please tell me you're not referring to Mission to Mars and/or Red Planet.

Unless this movie starts with 'I am f$&&ed, I am so f'd' I am going to consider the two completely unrelated.

Sounds legit

I just finished the book last night. These viral videos are great. Scott did a good job with them leading to Prometheus too, despite the shortcomings of the film itself.

Kristin Wiig as Annie is perfect! She was probably my favorite secondary character, and I'm sure Wiig will pull her off well.

For some reason I doubted Matt Damon as Watney, until I saw these viral videos. I forgot about some of his guest appearance stuff that should have made me believe he could pull it off (like in House of Lies or Jimmy Kimmel stuff).

I've been avoiding anything at all related to this film until finishing the book (and still avoiding official trailers), but man they assembled a ridiculous cast! I get to see another film with Michael Pena in it this year?! Can't wait until he delivers one of the lines from the book. A little disappointed that Chiwetel Ejiofor is Venkat. He's a great actor, but the audio book narration did a great job making him a believable Indian character, that I felt like I had met before.

Man that cast is great though. Sean Bean as Mitch, Jeff Daniels as Teddy, Glover as Rich, Chastain as Lewis, and on.

Robinson Crusoe on Mars is actually a pretty good movie for being 50 years old. I saw it when I was young and impressionable and have fond memories of it.

I have to know - does Mona the monkey survive?
OldArmy71

Now remember that I have not seen this movie in 50 years.

The monkey is useful to the surviving astronaut because she finds water in a cave. Also, there is very little oxygen on the surface, but Mona finds what I remember as a sort of plant with little buds on it that contain oxygen, so he can travel around the surface as long as he carries some of these with him. (That's the way I remember it.)

The aliens--by far the least interesting part of the movie--come into play because the astronaut hears explosions. When he investigates, he discovers that aliens have enslaved some folks who look human to work in an open-pit mine. One of them escapes, with his help, and he becomes Friday.

Mona the monkey survives, but I'm not sure how it ends. I recall that there is a satellite that the astronaut keeps trying to contact when it passes overhead--this happens a number of times in the movie--but I can't remember if he is finally able to communicate with it and with earth, and if they are rescued.

Wow, again that trailer gives away so much. If you haven't read the book, don't watch the trailer unless you want to see what I consider to be some pretty big plot points.
