Very good.

Probably goes without saying, but if you enjoyed it, you need to check out the book. they follow the story closely, but the book just has higher highs and lower lows.

Thoughts on the ending for those who read the book...

SPOILERS

What did you think about them changing the ending and having Watney actually poke the hole in his suit and having Lewis go and rescue him? I actually liked the ending in the book better with Beck and Vogel doing the rescue. I thought it would have been better to see Beck go in and grab Watney and hold on to him and see Vogel have to very carefully pull back on the tether to not snap it off the MMU. I believe the book went into detail with how Vogel had to pull back with just the right force and at the right time to reduce their velocity and then be able to pull them back to Hermes. I thought having Lewis be the one that went after him and then losing him to be pretty cheesy...

I liked the book ending better, but Beck and Vogel may as well have been cut from the movie so I understand why they put Lewis there.
I think you're right about the way it down in the book.

Saw it this morning. I have not read the book (thinking of doing so now), so I had no pre-conceived notions. This was a movie that grabbed my attention and never let go. As the movie went on, I was thinking that I could not recall a similar Ridley Scott movie where he remembers that he actually has human characters in his movies (Alien, Blade Runner, and Prometheus capture the artistic and technical realities of his movies very well but often seem to back-burner the emotional content of his characters). I was actually surprised then when there was strong characterization that developed through the course of this movie.

Thought it was very good. Only thing off the top of my head that I would have changed is that I think I would have done away with the "talking out" the texts back and forth. Just felt like the last one he sent telling the captain to tell his parents he was a part of something bigger, etc... would have been better slowly reading it on screen.

Was awesome but didn't like the Hollywood ending they had to throw in there. Was way too far-fetched. Would have been just as dramatic if they had done it how it was done in the book. They took a great movie and soiled it with that one bit they just had to add just for shock value. Hollywood sucks.

*******Book spoiler.... I haven't read this thread in a while....

the rover trip to aris 4 was way too easy in the movie. I thought for sure the storm was going to come in to play. When Watney woke up because his suit lights kicked on, I thought for sure they were going that way. Still a great movie though.

Awesome film. Thought Damon was great, and such a relief to see that Ridley Scott can still make a complete movie.

I've read the book and the screenplay, and I was still on the edge of my seat, and had all of Mark's emotions resonate with me.

Speaking of the screenplay, that's the first one I've ever read. It's really cool to see 120 pages come to life in a blockbuster movie. Fascinating process.

I watched it last night & fell asleep twice in this movie. I do have to say that I was tired. It was ok overall. I left feeling like I've seen this movie before and there was nothing unique. For me it was a mix between Gravity, Apollo 13 and Cast Away.

This is going to be difficult to describe but I thought the acting was good but not great. I like the actors in the movie but there was just something off for me. Jeff Daniels was very similar to News Room Jeff Daniels. Kristin Wiig did a good job but I felt myself wanting to giggle at some of her facial expressions. I'm not a fan of comedians in serious roles because it's difficult for me to look past it. That's not fair but it's how I felt throughout the movie. Matt Damon was ok for me. My favorite was Nick Mohammed's character (if I'm thinking of the right person). They kept putting pressure on him to get things done and the body language of his stress level was spot on!

Overall it was a decent movie. I don't think I'll watch this again unless it's the only thing on and I'm relaxing on the couch.

*****Spoiler if you haven't seen it. I'll keep it vague but the scene of the supply drop off was too obvious. I'm pretty sure we all knew that was coming.*****

I read the book and watched the movie.

I wish Kristen Wiig's character had more lines in the movie, and unfortunately the PG-13 rating cut out a lot of her humor. Sean Bean was good, but unfortunately I read the book and was hoping for more of a cowboy in that role. Also disappointed that KAPOOR was not an Indian actor, even though Chiwetel Ejiofor did a superb job. Finally - while Donald Glover did admirably, they picked the wrong Community actor. Danny Pudi would have killed in that role!

In general, this movie was beautiful, and I wish I had seen it in 3D, but (and this could be because I read the book) it felt a bit rushed without enough development for the Earth based characters.

SPOILER

I would have preferred that Beck would have been the one to go out to save Watney, because reading the book I was convinced that Beck was going to die, and that suspense would have conveyed better in the film too had it not been the commander. Though, I did like that they had him Ironman in the movie, mostly because I took that he just really wanted to do it, rather than had to.

I watched this movie yesterday. While I like the story arc behind Interstellar better, I liked the ingenuity and survival aspect of The Martian better. It was a good movie... had some predictable parts but it wasn't as ridiculous as Gravity as far as unfortunate events happening back to back to back to the character.

Someone made a comment regarding Gravity and Interstellar that suggested they were better. As I said i haven't seen either of those two. I did however assume Gravity as being more along the lines of Armageddon as far as competely ridiculous things happening.

I liked Armageddom despite it having somewhat of a 'Pearl Harbor' cheesiness.

i would put gravity and the martian solidly in the category as far as seriousness and enjoyable-ness. i liked them both a lot. martian is a little more science fact based, in my opinion, but gravity wasn't a fantasy exercise, either.

interstellar is definitely farther along on the suspension of disbelief scale. but i really liked it as well.

For those who have read the book and seen the movie which do you think it the best one to do first?

I have the book but will that take away from a badass movie?

For me personally, I've found that it's easier to read something first because it's a bigger time commitment. Plus it's just harder to get into reading it once I've already watched it. I also enjoy creating the scenes in my head, and then seeing how the filmmakers interpreted them as opposed to the way I did.

After seeing the movie, my one disappointment is they left the best non-watney line out of the movie.

I always opt to read the book first.

I like to imagine the scene the author is describing with no preconceived ideas.

Then seeing the movie I get to enjoy another person's interpretation.

If I see a movie first, it is hard to picture anything else when reading the book.

I was disappointed we didn't get the Aquaman comment too. That line made me laugh the hardest when reading the book.
