I know this is back to the basics, but I'm slightly concerned that it's a little... basic? If this movie has Hulk, Punisher, Scorpion, Tombstone, the Hand(?!), Tarantula and whoever Sadie Sink is playing, a lot of those villains will be about as substantial as the side villains in Fantastic Four. Which is to say, mostly cameos or part of a montage.

So maybe there's a power vacuum, Spidey has been fighting crime left right and center for 4 years, his personal life is a wreck, he might need some help, and someone from this trailer will emerge as the true Villain of the film, possibly by endangering MJ and/or Ned and he'll stop them and gain some new perspective.

Sounds kinda like Daredevil season 2, and maybe Spider-Man on PS4.

It's funny, I was very skeptical before NWH because I didn't need multiverse or have that much McGuire/Garfield nostalgia, but I felt they pulled it all together in a fresh and creative way. It sounded like a reach but ended up being a grand slam. I was excited for a fresh start to the new era of Spider-Man but it feels a little samey and safe.

I'm sure it'll be good in the end, and it does look more dynamic from a 2nd rewatch (not on a phone), but my hype is a little less than it was a week ago. And it's not the director of the first three, but the guy from Shang-Chi and Wonder Man, so it is a little less of a proven commodity than before.

Can someone refresh me on the deal Sony and Disney have regarding Spidey and other Marvel characters?

FOr the first 3 movies, DIsney had to put one major Marvel character into each of the Sony movies.

Homecoming - Stark
Far from Home - Mace Windu / Maria Hill
No Way Home - Dr Strange / Wong

This one - at least Banner, not sure if Hulk counts as a separate character.

Sony also has a committment to try and make the worst superhero movie ever every few years,

Hulk is interesting, because Universal still has distribution rights to his solo movies. Do they get any say on his use in Sony movies?
rhutton125

The only say anyone but Disney has in Hulk is solo film distribution. Writing and so on, totally up to Disney. That's why he can be in Avengers, She-Hulk, etc without any issue but solo Hulk films are basically in purgatory.

Sony has the rights to Spider-Man and basically anyone who originated in or came from Spider-Man comics. Their deal with Disney is usually something like X number of creatively-shared solo Spider-Man movies and Y number of team-up appearances.

The original deal, IIRC, was two solo films and three team-ups (Homecoming, Far From Home, Civl War, Infinity War and Endgame). That's when the deal wasn't renewed and it was looking like his time in the MCU was done. But they made a new deal, I think for two solo films and two team-up films, but I'm not as tuned into it as I once was. But that'd be No Way Home, Brand New Day and presumably Secret Wars and a team-up to be named later.

Thanks! I assume there's something in the agreement where Marvel helps Sony make the Spidey movies, because they're way better than other recent Sony efforts.

Marvel just announced dates, but not titles for FIVE movies after Doomsday/Secret Wars

  • May 5, 2028
  • July 28, 2028 (which was just shifted from February 18, 2028)
  • December 15, 2028
  • and now May 4, 2029
  • and July 13, 2029

Potential candidates...

- Blade
- Black Panther 3
- Doctor Strange 3
- Midnight Sons
- Shang-Chi 2
- Spider-Man 5
- Thor 5
- X-Men

... plus whatever other surprises.

That said, at this point we can safely assume that Black Panther 3 and X-Men will be two of the 2028 dates. The others are anyone's guess.

Forgot about that one. Then again, it massively underperformed, to the point where I wonder if there's even going to be a sequel.

My guesses are (not in release date order either)

Think these are definitely happening within those dates
Thor 5
X-men
Dr Strange 3

My wild cards are
3rd Avengers movie (forming a doom/secret wars trilogy)
Midnight Sons

if doomsday does really well then I think you can expect a FF sequel since it sounds like they'll be pivotal characters to it

Just FYI...

- Black Panther 3 is officially Ryan Coogler's next movie after he shoots his pilot for The X-Files reboot this summer. So BP3 will shoot in 2027 and release in 2028.

- X-Men is all but guaranteed for one of the 2028 spots as well. It already has a writer (and that writer is basically done with the script), a director, and the new team will almost assuredly be introduced in Avengers: Secret Wars.

That leaves one spot left for 2028, which could go to...

- Blade
- Doctor Strange 3
- Fantastic Four 2
- Midnight Sons
- Shang-Chi 2
- Thor 5

... or a surprise movie, while Spider-Man 5 almost assuredly wouldn't release until 2029 at the earliest.

However, because of the whole Dune: Part Three conundrum, I wouldn't be surprised if Avengers: Doomsday moves from December 2026 to, say, May 2027, thus pushing Avengers: Secret Wars from December 2027 to May 2028.

But who knows? Hopefully we hear more soon...

Also Disney/Marvel doesn't schedule the release dates for Spider-Man movies….Sony does.

Maybe they're doing reshoots for Doomsday based on the FF box office went. He could kill them off and then the OG Avengers / Xmen have to save the day, which then sets up the XMen movies.

I watched FF on Disney Plus a few months after it was released. Just didn't move the needle at all, especially the final fight.

I would be shocked if doomsday got pushed back. With all the advertising…especially 4 trailers that all ended with a countdown clock for their December release date, it would look really bad if it got pushed back because of dune 3.

Also we did just have zootopia 2 and avatar 3 release in December and they both did quite well with zootopia 2 actually outperforming avatar 3 (didn't have that one on my bingo card)

So I think doomsday will stay put
TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Zootopia 2 released on November 13, 2025.

Avatar: Fire and Ash released over a month later on December 19, 2025.

The difference here is that Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday are BOTH currently scheduled to release on December 18, 2026. That, and their audiences overlap more than Zootopia and Avatar's.

The biggest issue, though, is that Dune: Part Three has exclusively locked in IMAX theaters for THREE WEEKS. Meaning Avengers: Doomsday can't be shown in IMAX until January 7th, which is box office suicide considering how important IMAX ticket sales are for blockbusters now.

Disney clearly thought Warner Bros would flinch, but Marvel isn't the big dog they once were, and Warner Bros not only didn't budge, they beat Disney to IMAX screens.

That said, I admittedly don't know where Avengers: Doomsday would move. Looking more closely at the schedule, The Legend of Zelda has already claimed Marvel's traditional first-weekend-of-May slot in 2027, while Disney currently has Star Wars: Starfighter slated for the end of May/Memorial Day weekend. So May 2027 is likely out, while July 2027 is already full as well, and Marvel doesn't typically release their biggest movies outside of those May/July/December windows.

So, yeah... who knows.

It's just looking more and more like Disney/Marvel completely **** the bed on this one.

The El Captain Theatre was 11/13 but wide release in the ISA was 11/26…but still was a November release regardless….Man Zootopia 2 had a hell if a run….felt like it came out in December cause this sucker is still in theaters even though it's now on Disney + ….nearly 4 months.

But also didn't realize IMAX was such a big deal…how can one movie claim all the IMAX theaters in the US for a period of time? I thought it would be up to the theaters to decide what films to show on what screens.

Did Disney royally screw the pooch here with not getting any IMAX screens for this? Yikes

The funniest part is Dune had the date first. Disney thought they could come in and steal it.

Blew up in their face.
CharleyKerfeld
How long do you want to ignore this user?
All they are both doing is screwing over the movie theaters.. With everything so pricy, a ton of people are going to pick one or the other and wait for the other to come out on streaming. I'm splurging to take my kids to see PHM today on the Imax and it's $95 before we even eat some candy.

It might be a brilliant strategy with the IMAX move by WB, but it seems like it's going to come at the cost of its own box office. Whole families watch the Avengers because kids love the superheroes. I don't think a lot of people are taking their whole family to see Dune.
YouBet

Of that list, I hope it's Midnight Sons.

People who want to watch Dune will still watch it, even if not on opening weekend. They both have a long runway with the holidays.

The Dune movies demand to be seen in theaters (and IMAX) even more so than any Avengers movies.

Agreed. I think this is mutually exclusive. Families will still go to a Marvel movie and then Mom and Dad or Dad will still go see Dune.

Realistically, what is the total worldwide gross $$$ expectation for Avengers: Doomsday from you resident F13 box office experts? And I clarify worldwide because the international box office has made up the majority of total revenue for most of the MCU films. Sooo, how still invested is the world in the MCU and comic book movies?

Obviously it'll eclipse Fantastic Four, but personally I'm not sure it'll come close to the $1.5-2.0 billion range of the MCU heavy hitters from the past. For example, my son and I were way into every MCU movie in phases 1-3, but now? Whether we see Doomsday in the theater will depend on our schedules and the reviews.

RDJ's involvement will drive the bus for the Doomsday BO. Other than the bomb "Dolittle" movie which came out 2 months before COVID, he's been in 2 films since Endgame: The 5 second cameo in FF and winning an Oscar in Oppenheimer.

Mixing the return of him and Cap, plus literally every fan favorite from the last 25 years, and i would be amazed if either Deadpool / Wolverine / both don't stumble into it as well, it's hard to imagine it doing less than R-rated Deadpool & Wolverine that made $1.3 billion. I'd say $1.5 billion minimum

It really depends on the international markets, our films have been dropping in China and I believe even in other international markets.

But I think there is still a world that both Spiderman and Doomsday could hit 2B

Spiderman has been quiet for 5 years, and people do like Tom Holland and Zendaya. The trailer views alone is stunning, the kids yearn for the Spider-mines. 780M views in 24 hours, doubling Deadpool Wolverine 24 hour views as the previous record holder

I mention Spiderman because that can set a great ground work for interest in the MCU again and Doomsday. And frankly the MCU has been on a quiet but successful recovery. Thunderbolts is widely considered a great MCU film, Fantastic Four is considered the most successful adaption that we have had. I believe Daredevil has been doing well and could end up having a great 2nd season. Wonderman was highly viewed for Disney, topping their charts and is widely considered a critical success.

You are getting RDJ and Chris Evans back as well and that is some of that secret sauce.

I believe 2026 is going to be a great year for the movie theater business between 2 MCU juggernauts, Project Hail Mary, Odyssey, and Dune 3. Even smaller projects like Supergirl.
