I saw a meme today that said "someone mentioned that something happened 30 years ago and I thought about 1974. Then I realized they meant 1994 and now I need a moment".

My step-dad was ecstatic when he turned 40. He was a power lifter and got to move into the Masters class against the old guys while he was on the younger end of that category.

We started watching Guardians Volume 3 tonight. Turned it off about 45 minutes in. Wife absolutely hated it.

I have to admit it's not great but I'll finish on my own later.

My primary mission at this point is to convince her to watch Deadpool because she's pretty much done with Marvel at this point.

I realize this is mostly a joke, but just to be 100% clear, they never filmed any scenes/version with any of the Spider-Men actors...

  • For some reason, at one point early in its development, the movie was going to take place in the Andrew Garfield / The Amazing Spider-Man universe. Why? I have no idea.
  • However, that iteration was scrapped, and Tom Holland's Spider-Man was ultimately chosen as the Spider-Man who would kind of sort be in the peripheral of the movie (but would never make an appearance). In other words, it would technically take place in the MCU, and that's the version of the movie that was filmed.
  • In that version, Adam Scott was/is rumored to play a young Uncle Ben (who would of course be married to a young Aunt May, played by Marisa Tomei 18 years later in-universe, though we almost assuredly wouldn't see her character). Adam Scott's character was/is a paramedic alongside Dakota Johnson's character, who also plays a paramedic.
  • For whatever reason, the filmmakers decided to set the movie in the 1990s - and filmed the movie as taking place in the 1990s. Wherein, as was rumored, by movie's end we would see baby Peter Parker in some kind of cameo. However, he would also likely be connected to Dakota Johnson's mom in some way, who, infamously, "was in the Amazon researching spiders right before she died." In other words, they were going to try and give Tom Holland's Spider-Man some kind of ridiculous lore/backstory, having to do with spiders that connected to Dakota Johnson's character's mom.
  • It wasn't until after the movie was shot, however, that Sony/the filmmakers realized that the timelines didn't add up, seeing as Tom Holland's Peter Parker wasn't born until 2001 in-universe. So, apparently, Sony then not only insisted that all references/hints/clues to Tom Holland's baby Peter Parker be cut, but without a baby Peter Parker there was no longer a point in making it a period piece. So they recut the movie - and apparently did some (very) minimal reshoots as well - to be set in some generic, undeterminable time period sometime between the '90s and now. Watch the trailer and you'll notice that the cars are all from the '90s, as are some of the clothing styles, but apparently this won't be addressed in the movie in any concrete way.
  • As to whether Adam Scott is still playing Uncle Ben, we'll have to wait and see.

How much of this is 100% accurate, I'm not sure, but it all comes from Jeff Sneider, who's one of the most reputable film journalists/scoopers out there, and someone I can vouch for personally. It would also explain why the actors initially thought they were joining the MCU - because, in fact, at one point they were. It wasn't until recently that that apparently changed.

So, yeah. Either way it's a complete sh*t show, and more proof that Disney is forever praying to the Marvel gods that Sony doesn't burn this whole thing down.

You just did all of Pitch Meetings work for them.

It was less the animal cruelty and more the body horror that got to me. 'Nam style flashbacks to Syd's room in Toy Story

Cause it was a dumb line that came out of nowhere in the trailer and the Internet overall has a pretty good sense of humor

Yeah, how dare people make fun of bad media.

I guess I read both those quoted tweets as ridiculing people who thought the line was dumb.

I agree that the line sucks, and that the memes were hilarious. It's just interesting how such a relatively big meme didn't even pierce the bubble of someone who's not as online as the rest of us, never mind it being the person who said the line in the first place.

I don't get any of it. I don't even see, TC, why it's a bad line in the first place. Seems like a pretty straightforward storyline. And the only thing I've seen of it is on this thread where it's popped up a couple of times.

And yeah, the interviewer did her no favors with his "explanation".

Whoever said that the internet isn't real life nailed it, but sooooo many people are not able to understand that. Social media has ruined so many peoples perception of reality.

Lots of things can be true.

The internet is not real life. My friends and I laughed our asses off at the "researching spiders" memes but I wouldn't introduce it to anyone who's not already aware of it.

The interviewer did a bad job explaining it, it's hard to 1) properly explain a viral moment like that 2) look an actress in the face and say "It's funny because it's a bad piece of dialogue awkwardly cut into a bad trailer for what looks like a bad movie."

And that's really all it is. It's funny to the internet because it's a clunky piece of expository dialogue in a trailer full of poorly written lines.

The reporter / media co putting that awkwardness online is all you need to know about people wanting clicks and willing to look like morons to get them.

This. The trailer had nothing to do with spiders until that totally ham-fisted line.

"He was in the Amazon with my mom when she was researching spiders just before she died," is just an incredibly awkward sentence. It's like someone decided they needed to convey the ideas, "He was in the Amazon," "He was with her mom," "Her mom was researching spiders," and, "Her mom died," and just put all those together with 0 editing or even different thought. "He was researching spiders in the Amazon with my mom just before she died," would have been much better. Even two sentences like, "He was with my mom in the Amazon just before she died. She was studying spiders," would have been infinitely better.

And in a trailer full of awkwardness, that really stuck out. Like someone else said, it's just a bad line in a bad trailer for a movie that looks pretty bad. It's really hard for an interviewer to ask an actress, "Hey, what did you think about that line going viral because it was so bad?" He's got to ask her about it without insulting her, and there's just no good way to do that.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I dont think that in the realm of viral memes that this one was particularly huge.. but also, I think if I were her, I'd act oblivious too.

What is the best option there? She admit that its bad and bag on her own movie?
TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Yeah, she could very well be acting/playing dumb there. Then again, she's notoriously aloof in the real life, so it's hard to say. Still, I can't imagine that her publicists/mangers/agents didn't at least brief her on it, if not make her aware of it when it was blowing up. Reps send that kind of stuff to their clients all the time.
