Dark World isn't the worst film.
It is to me. Lamest/most vanilla villain in the entire MCU. Honestly, though, I feel like IM2, Incredible Hulk, and T:TDW could all be switched out for worst MCU movie. Only reason I put IM2 above them was because there are big chunks of that movie I actually really like. I love that world. Asgard, on the other hand, bores me to death. And Incredible Hulk wasn't so much bad as it was bland.

For me it's the entire stretch of him not doing iron man type things.

The "daddy issues" Stark dealt with in IM2 were a total snooze. Also, the subplot about his arc reactor poisoning him, then finding the cure in blueprints for his dad's StarkFest (or whatever it was called) was terrible.
The final fight with Whiplash was pretty forgettable, too. None of the action sequences really stuck with me.

I truly, unabashedly love Shane Black. Every single thing about him.

The Bana Hulk has nothing to do with the MCU.
They took the basic origin story from the Bana version, used their new actors and continued on. The flashbacks seen in the Norton version are basically re-created scenes from the Bana Hulk but with the new actors. Hell, William Hurt was even sporting a Sam Elliott mustache.
They're trusting that you've seen the Bana Hulk movie, so they can gloss over it and give a condensed version in a flashback.

They rely on viewers having background on the Hulk character, and there may even be some nods to the Bana version (him being in SA had more to do with the storyline of looking for a cure than nodding to the Bana version imo), but there is way more different than the same.
The intro to the Norton Hulk doesn't reference the Bana Hulk. Quite the opposite. Bana is blasted with radiation on accident. Norton does it on purpose. All of the intro stuff in the Norton version is nod to the TV show.
quote:I'm the complete opposite. I love IM2 and think IM3 was quite a stretch in some parts of the story. Not to mention Tony spent quite a bit of film time out of the suit in IM3 (a complaint some seem to have about IM2). I just remember feeling a bit meh after leaving the theater when I saw IM3.quote:

Bana's Hulk came out in 2003. MCU didn't get it's start until 2008 with Iron Man and then Incredible Hulk with Norton. I don't think the MCU had any intentions of connecting to the Ang Lee Hulk at all. Especially given the huge negative reaction the comic faithful had to that movie.

Guys, we're not just making sh*t up. Yes, the MCU officially began in 2008, but Marvel is on the record as saying that Norton's Hulk was developed - VERY, VERY LOOSELY - with Bana's Hulk in mind. Otherwise they would have just started over with Norton's Hulk.

Connections to the 2003 Hulk movie
Although there were originally plans for a sequel to the 2003 Hulk movie featuring the Gray Hulk, the dark tone and poor performance of that film inspired Marvel Studios to decide that the next Hulk film needed to be done differently. As a result, screenwriter Zak Penn wrote three drafts of a story which would serve as a follow-up to the 2003 movie, but drawing more from the TV show and comic books. He described it as akin to Batman Begins, where the movie is not out-of-continuity with the others in the series, but neither is it a direct sequel. In his words:
"The first movie is not about Bruce Banner dealing with the repercussions of being the Hulk, it's much more about him becoming the Hulk. He gets taken to a base and put under observation pretty quickly. This movie is about Bruce Banner on the run and what life is like. There's stuff that I didn't want to deal with that was in the first movie. You're not going to see anything about his father or his experiments or anything, because to me, as a fan, that was the part that I found most frustrating... When Penn's commitments as director on The Grand required him to leave the project, Marvel Studios was still not satisfied with the screenplay. Part of their contract with Hulk actor Edward Norton stipulated that he would be paid to re-write it. He was hired only 3 months before filming was due to start, and had one month to produce the final screenplay. His changes were focused on further distancing it from the 2003 film and creating more of a "starting over" tone. Other connections include:
- The story begins with Bruce living in South America, where the character was last seen at the end of Hulk.
- Lou Ferrigno appears as a security guard. He was also a security guard in Hulk.
quote:I do have to agree with you there. Mickey Rourke is the one thing I can't stand about the movie. Just watched it again recently and I'm sitting there thinking "there's no way this tatted up meat head is smart enough to do the kind of stuff Tony Stark does".
I'd say the worst part of IM2 was Mickey Rourke. Total miscast.
Sam Rockwell was great though.
