If you make Spider-Man black, then by definition, you are changing the character.

No, you're not. You're changing the COLOR of the character. "Character" - in the narrative/cinematic sense - refers to personality traits. In other words, "character" is what makes a person tick. In the case of Peter Parker, his "whiteness" isn't a definitive characteristic of his personality. Not in any way, shape, or form. For some characters, sure, the fact that they are black or white absolutely defines who they are as a person and how the world sees them. But not in the case of Peter Parker. Having him be a skinny black kid in high school does not change - in any way - anything about his personality. He can literally be the exact same character, just with a different skin color.

Besides, insisting he be white for NO OTHER REASON than he's always been white, and you want him to remain that way, IS a somewhat offensive stance to take. To prefer a white Peter Parker, just because you want him to be white, by its very definition, means you DON'T want to watch a darker-colored Peter Parker on screen. It means, by your own admission, you'll get less enjoyment from watching a darker-colored human being on the screen than you would from a white Parker. And that's messed up. Plain and simple. I know it's coming from a place non-racist innocence - I totally get that - but you can't argue that it's sound reasoning. Saying, "I just want to see the white Peter parker I grew up with" - ESPECIALLY after you've already seen that version TWICE before - whether you mean for it to be or not, is a form of discrimination. If, traditionally, Uncle Ben was in the KKK, or Parker was somehow defined by his whiteness in high school - then sure, changing him to be black would be stupid. But Peter Parker's skin color does not affect the way he operates as a character. That is an inarguable fact.
No, I'm using character in the sense of "a person in a novel, play, or movie." The character of Peter Parker aas portrayed in the comic books is a white guy, and to change his skin color makes him a different character...a black guy.

I'm a white guy. If you portray me in a movie with Will Smith, that ain't me because I'm white and he's not.

I'm still not getting how that's racist.

  • keep Parker white
  • kill him off in "Infinity Wars: Part 1"
  • Sony makes new origin movie with Morales
  • Morales is in "Infinity Wars: Part 2"

- Have Donald Glover play Parker
- Have Ansel Elgort play Morales
- ???
- Profit
Then have Steven Yeun play Blade.

Tom Rothman is the WORST. I'd rather be hacked every six months than let him run my studio. Sony's in trouble.

We've already seen two iterations of Spiderman and neither have done the scientist aspect justice. They briefly hit on some of these in 2004 & 2012 movies, but it wasn't the central to his character. Now, a bunch of politically correct neer-do-wells want to double down on the mistake and make Peter Parker black which will inherently insert minority related themes and distract from the scientist aspect.

go onnnnnnn........

Neil deGrasse Tyson is a great example.

Discussions of his work with the Hubble Telescope, Moon Mars & Beyond and other scientific achievements get convoluted with claims that he was kicked out of UT due to his skin color or how he's obligated to promote science for the black community.

I don't really have a stake in this argument, but I have been reading a bit about the character Black Panther lately. Mostly because he will be appearing in Captain America 3, and then in his own movie in 2018. He's most well-known for being the first black superhero in major comics.

If there was a shortage of black characters in the MCU, I could see a reason for changing Spider-Man's ethnicity. But as of Captain America 3, there will be Nick Fury, Cpt. James Rhodes, Falcon (who we can assume to be prominent again), and the ethnicity-is-100%-tied-to-his-character Black Panther. And in the other studio, the black Johnny Storm.

So it's not entirely like we're hurting for black heroes, which is surprising because 3 years ago we only had Rhodes, and Samuel L. Jackson in a few cameos (until Avengers). Maybe none of them have the franchise potential that Spider Man has, but again, there IS a solo Black Panther film set for 2018.

Maybe a stronger case could be made for a need for more diverse heroes than white and black.

Like, say a Hispanic.....?

Too bad there isn't a Hispanic (or Black-Spanic) character that could be brought forth....oh, wait, there is!

At least the gays have Robin.

*By the way, you're leaving out Storm, from X-Men.

Blade is a marvel comic book character which first appeared in the early 70s. The later movies were based on that character,

Yeah I know. I don't know what Big Rob is talking about with him being a different character.

Also, 70's Blade is funky:

I was responding to the guy who obviously didn't know the movie, "Blade", was about a comic book character, judging by his reaction to the GIF from the movie. He said "Ahh, thought it was some different comic book character that y'all were talking about.".

Yes, we were talking about Blade, who is another/different comic book character.

Steven Yeun would make an awesome Blade....or would it be "Brade"?

Here we go. Best news ever: Drew Goddard will write and direct the solo Spider-man movie. And, like I said, it won't be an origin story in anyway. Instead, it will apparently have Spidey going up against Iron Man in attempt to join the Avengers. This could be super-cool...

I was actually talking to someone yesterday about how it sucks for Goddard if he left Daredevil to join a Sinister Six project that might not happen. Now he can be a part of the MCU AND have the Sinister Six involved (big for him because it was his dream project right?)

Regardless, love the news!

Is this the first time they have stated (rumored?) that MCU characters will appear in the Spidey solo flicks? I know that obviously they would exist in the same universe now, I just dont remember having heard that Marvel Studios characters would guest star in Spider-man movies as well.

Could RDJ surpass Depp for the most money earned for a single character?

RDJ could ask for $50 mill for that movie and probably get it.

Yeah, it was mentioned when news first broke. They've said any current MCU character could appear in the solo Spidey film(s). That said, everyone assumed it'd be somewhat secondary characters, or someone like Nick Fury or Bruce Banner. No one ever thought it'd actually be Stark / Iron Man.
