Getting out of TV sounds good, but with X-Men around the corner, it's kind of a shame. I've always thought that with Disney+, the movies could stay focused on the existential threats like Magneto and Apocalypse, but you'd have an avenue for smaller-scale stories like Gambit & Rogue or things like that.

Agree. I also would accept a couple of "TV" movies to supplement the theater movies a year. Just smaller stories with the main characters or lesser characters.

They could still do that while avoiding the "tv show homework" situation they created.

on the flipside, if the shows were all actually very good they wouldnt feel like homework

They have a hell of a lot of work to do to undo how bad Rogue was in the original Xmen movies. I dont want a show about that character.

Now give the director of the Spider Noir show a chance at a Gambit show and Im in. I envision lots of back alley fight scenes and grungy shady set pieces.

Rogue rules, don't worry about Anna Paquin. They just need to give her the strength her character has, for starters.

If the rumors of Cailee Spaeny are true then we should be in good hands

I still can't get over the perfect casting of Samara as Emma

Casting is one thing, and I have no complaints so far on the casting and rumors so far. But execution is another thing. IMO the verdict is still out on Feige's vision for the X-men.

I still maintain that making Jean Grey an evil killer in Brand New Day is a major misstep and not a good way to start off this new version of the X-men. I really, really, really don't want Marvel to make these new X-men the angsty, morally ambiguous, "the world is against me so I'm justified doing bad things" cliche. Make them actual heroes. In the recent past the Marvel comics leaned too heavily on the humans-hate-mutants angle. That's been done to death in both the comics and movies. Get back to making them just simple heroes fighting threats.

I wish they would go this route. Sadly, I predict they won't.

Thats not really the X-Men story tho. They are hated/hunted by humans and their decision to still protect and help is what makes them heroes. Thats the major conflict for the characters. I think making that struggle fresh is going to be the key to making X-Men good. IDK how they are going to do that, but this character intro is at least an interesting piece.

showing Jean have a dark side already, before dealing with Pheonix Force stuff (if they go that way) is interesting to me

Lol, I think you and I are destined to always have opposing viewpoints!

I agree that making Jean layered, even without the Phoenix Force aspect, is interesting and good storytelling. But she literally killed at least one person, and likely killed numerous others (at least seriously injured them). Even if the end result was that Spidey saved them, the point was that Jean Grey was willing to kill them. That's not dark, that's malicious. Villainous. And we can't just blow it off simply because we know that in the comics she's a hero. Hell, I have no problem with Damage Control arresting her sister - when we saw Jean and Sarah together in the park they were mind controlling random innocent people's minds just for the fun of it! If that's real life, then hell yeah, I'm cheering on the government rounding them up! But in this movie I'm supposed to feel sorry for them? Nope, sorry.

And the human v. mutant conflict will always be present but doesn't have to be the sole focus point of every X-men movie. That's all I'm saying.

I think its intentional that the audience is to feel conflicted about her. She was villainous and showed a careless disregard for life for sure. So did Peter at one point in the movie, which allowed him to have empathy for her situation. Whether the audience can/does is the interesting wrinkle and could make for better storytelling with the human/mutant conflict in the X-Men movies. Thats all I'm saying.

And my other point, without the human/mutant conflict being the central theme of X-Men, what other stories are there to tell. Its the backbone of the X-Men. I'm not sure what else you think they are going to do with those characters.

Well, there's the actual Dark Phoenix storyline they could do. Or the storyline where original team was captured by the island of Karkoa and Prof X had to recruit new members like Storm, Nightcrawler, and Colossus. Or just one of the many stories of them versus Magneto. You're correct that being outcasts from humans will always be the backbone, I'm simply saying we've seen that be the outright focus or a strong focal point for plenty of the X-men movies to date.

There's plenty else Marvel can do with them beyond the basic obvious mutant vs. human trope. Unfortunately, thanks to Hollywood that seems to be the only thing your average person knows about the X-men.

Right, there are other stories, but they are all kind of dependent on the human v mutant background. The whole reason they are at odds with Magneto is because of that. They have to set up those stakes to move forward with those characters. I get that its been done before, so maybe you are just annoyed they are remaking the X-Men in the MCU at all and would prefer they use other characters?
FL_Ag1998

Hmmm.....no, I'm fine with the X-men being reintroduced. Although they should stay away from Wolverine for a long while. And I guess what I'm saying is they need to do a storyline like Apocalypse (the human v mutant aspect was just the foundation of Apocalypse, but the storyline was X-men vs him), rather than a Days of Future Past storyline where the whole story is Humans vs X-men. Have Prof X bring the initial X-men group together to fight some worldwide threat that's facing humans and mutants alike.

So, to clarify my stance, the major conflict shouldn't be humans vs mutants.

As an intro I almost feel like you have to center somewhat around the human vs mutant conflict, it's foundational to them as characters.

Mutants are different/scary/bad, and we're afraid of them. But the heroes of the group are going to save us anyway while others take an anti-human approach and some fall into more gray areas.

I hear ya, and no doubt that's what we'll get. If they just get the actual character personalities correct, as opposed to what they've done with Jean Grey, then I won't complain.

Gail Simone actually writes X-men comics, and even she listed the following as "rules" she has when writing Uncanny X-men. See rule No. 8....

https://www.msn.com/en-us/tv/news/x-men-writer-officially-reveals-how-marvel-can-redeem-its-fan-favorite-team/ar-AA28v24B

Quote:

"1) Tell different stories than are being told elsewhere

2) Be entertaining. It's the best cast in comics, let them be cool and fun and badass.

3) Don't focus on the same eight villains. Bring new stuff.

4) Give them a setting of their own that is new and feels consequential.

5) When possible, tour the best dark corners of the MU.

6) Bring some new POV characters, people who could see Wolverine for the first time and we can feel their wonder.

7) Where possible, push the sexiness of the sexiest superheroes ever.

8)As much as possible, avoid the 'they are hated and feared more than ever!' trope.

9) Don't be afraid to break hearts.

10) Honor the classics, don't imitate them forever.

11) Remember you are writing UNCANNY X-MEN and that is about the funnest gig in all Marvel comics.

12) Repeat rule #2 every day.

13) See rule #12."

She says it better than I did in my posts.

So a thought just occurred to me for the MCU post-Doomsday/Secret Wars. The big question is what bad guy/direction do they go? Welllll...

They're introducing the X-men and correct me if I'm wrong but I think there is at least rumors they're going to cast Magik. We know Ghost Rider is a thing now in the MCU. And they introduced Mephisto in that horrible Ironheart show. They've done the space villain threat. The time villain threat. And now the Dr. Doom multiverse threat.

Are these signs they're going the dark arts/demons/hell route as the overall next direction?

SPOILERS for those who haven't seen the movie yet, but give this video a watch. The character needs an arc, and I'd argue the arc is more effective starting where it did, in this movie, than had it started in otherwise more neutral territory. Personally, I like that Marvel isn't playing it safe with these characters...

That guy's point is an obvious one like Saxsoon said, but he's not wrong, and that's certainly one way to view what's happened so far with Jean. If Fiege's goal is to create an MCU where humans (and the movie viewers?) are more than justified in hating all mutants and thinking they should all be locked up, then certainly, make one of the most popular and founding "good guy" mutants an actual bad guy. Because that's what they did by having Jean's actions being legitimate evil, as opposed to just slightly "bending the law but harmless to innocent civilians".

Or like I said, if they really want to introduce mutants in this universe by giving the humans a legit reason to fear them and hunt them, why not start by introducing an actual bad mutant? Hell, introduce several bad ones, then in your actual X-man movie you introduce the good ones who now have an uphill battle to fight against not only the bad mutants but the bad impression humans now havd of mutants.

I just hope Fiege knows they've already pissed off a lot, if not all, of the actual comic book fans. And that's not me speaking for the comic book fanbase, that's the reactions I'm seeing online.

But this is just the very, very beginning of these new X-men. I'm reminded not to get ahead of myself, a la the Odyssey's Page/Achilles casting rumor.

The Maximoff twins were actual bad guys, killed thousands of people, destroyed a whole country and almost the planet. And they were invited to be full fledged avengers.

Let's not set the bar for good behavior too high here

Lol, you have a good point. And what Wanda did in her tv show then the Dr. Strange movie is ridiculous for a supposed "hero". Plus the MCU gave us that stupid girl that played the bad guy in the Falcon and Winter Soldier tv show, and at the end we were supposed to feel sorry for her and excuse everything she did. The MCU has a problem with expecting the viewer to just overlook some really bad behavior in certain characters simply because we're told those characters are actually good guys deep down and their bad behavior is justified due to some deep-seated trauma. Its poor writing. The comics have had some really bad storylines, like Hydra Cap, and the MCU seems to lean into dumb decisions like that rather than avoid them.
