Marvel is doing the production of the standalone Spiderman film(s), are they not?

This is going to be the most micro and over-managed movie in history. Talk about having too many cooks...

There were already rumors that the casting was taking so long because Sony didn't like Marvel's choice for the role. I get that Sony is hesitant and protective of their most valued property, but they just need to let Marvel do its thing.

I can just see the meetings now...

Sony Exec: We're not sure about this decision and direction you guys are going with this

I was in a meeting / off Twitter all morning, and when I got back on, had no idea Spider-Man had been cast until I read this thread. Usually, when huge news breaks, it's obviously talked about on Twitter for hours and hours after the fact, if not days. Even scrolling back a few hours, this news hardly registered. So weird how much of a wet fart this whole thing has been. I don't even see people complaining about the director. It's basically like no gives a sh*t.

People are tired of spiderman. Marvel has their work cut out for them with this one, perhaps more than any MCU movie to date.

It's not that surprising is it? Studios love to copy trends and the director of the biggest opening ever's only credit before was an indie comedy with Aubrey Plaza and it's not like the Russos had a particularly robust filmography before getting handed Cap2.

There was a good grantland article discussing this ripple effect and if we're seeing the end of the indie director incrementally taking on bigger projects before getting handed a franchise a la Nolan. Monsters got Gareth Edwards Godzilla, 500 days got Webb the last Spidey iteration, Chronicle led to Fantastic Four.

There's just way too many comic book movies going on right now, many much bigger than another Spider-Man reboot. I think the lack of ****-giving by most of America is a combination of comic fatigue, plus the fact that the last two Spider-Man movies were aggressively mediocre.

More than that I think it's Spidey-overload.

You're looking at the third reboot in 10 years...that's ridiculous, and I love Spidey.

Hard to have any opinion about Tom Holland. You can't really have a negative one because no one knows who he is, but it's definitely not going to cause people to get excited. Plus we've been hearing for months now that so and so was the front runner only to be nixed a day later. At this point it's pretty much, "ok whatever... just get to work on it"

So true. And admittedly, for sure, that first shot of Spidey with Tony Stark / Captain America will be a huge deal. Genuinely excited to see that.

That's exactly where I stand. Right now I'm actually more excited about every single other Marvel franchise that's on the slate (Black Pather, Captain Marvel, Dr. Strange) than I am about another Spidey movie - and Spidey was my favorite comic as a kid. But once I see Spidey alongside the Avengers, THEN I'll geek out.

I'll say this... when I think of Peter Parker, I think of a kid who looks almost exactly like Holland does in those videos. Give him some glasses and we're good to go. I just love that he looks like an actual teenager.

I have a question that may not have an easy answer. It's regarding character rights.

Thinking far into the future here... let's say RDJ retires from the role after Infinity War. Maybe they kill his character, maybe not.

What would it take to ensure that Marvel retains the rights to the Iron Man character? Would they need to reboot the franchise immediately? Would a few cameos of the suit be enough?

What's the minimum requirement, if there is such a thing, to ensure that Disney doesn't lose a character or something like that? Maybe I'm thinking of the whole thing wrong.

Exactly, the only reason the other studios have to keep making movies with their characters (X-men, Fantastic 4, etc) is because of their licensing agreement with Marvel. Marvel/Disney owns the characters.

and now that Disney is in control you can rest assured that the characters will never enter the public domain via copyright expiration

The only characters that Marvel doesn't own the rights to are ones that it licensed out to other studios when it was facing bankruptcy in the 90s (Spider-Man, X-Men, and Fantastic Four are the big ones off the top of my head).

Theoretically Marvel could lose the rights to some characters sometime around 2050 with current copyright law, but that'll probably be modified to protect Mickey Mouse by then.

Ah, excellent. So they have to keep pushing out X-Men and Fantastic Four movies, but the Disney Marvel films could take a 10 year hiatus and it wouldn't matter in terms of contracting.
