Bob Dylan- Hurricane
Wooderson made me want to slow walk through a room with that playing in the background.

And honorable mention to:
The Black Crowes- Wiser Times

Whole Lotta Love - Possibly the most famous rock and roll riff of all time.

I get that you worship the ground Led Zeppelin walks on, but its a stretch to even say its in the top 5.

Badass marimba work.

Thick as a Brick- Jethro Tull

Not really. I get that not everyone is a fan, but my statement is pretty close to true from an objective standpoint. But I'll let you sell me on 5 rock and roll riffs that you think are better known.

Easy: satisfaction, Smoke in the Water, Purple Haze, Sunshine of Your Love, Johnny B Goode, Iron Man, Shook me all night long, Enter Sandman, Sweet Child O Mine, and yes, even Smells Like Teen Spirit would be more recognizable.

Pretty good list. But only the top 5 are in the same league. The rest are not even close except with people under 40, I'd say.

Your post is more of a stretch than my original one.

When you're talking about most famous, age group shouldn't matter. If you went up to random people from all ages and races and played the riff from Smells Like Teen Spirit and Whole Lotta Love, I bet Teen Spirit would be more recognizable.

Wu Tang - Method Man. Best hip hop skit ever

Johnny Cash - The Man Comes Around

Cool ending as well.

I could go for another thread about guitar riffs, but to keep this on topic...

"Jesse's Girl", Rick Springfield.

I realize that we music snobs hate that song, but the intro gets most crowds jazzed.

Same with "Blister in the Sun" by Violent Femmes.

Also, the guitar riff may be the song intro in some cases.

I can't think of any bad song intros. Just bad songs that have beginnings.

Chicago - 25 or 6 to 4

I submit Boston's 4th album "Walk On", in its entirety, to prove that there are indeed bad intros to otherwise good songs. And you should know that I say this as a diehard Boston fan who actually likes that album a lot. But there's not a decent one on any song on that album.

First song that came to mind. I also love the bass at the beginning of "No More Tears" - Ozzy

I'd argue that the main riff for "Bad to the Bone" by George Thorogood is more famous than "Whole Lotta Love".

this is a great thread! I agree with nearly everyone on this list. I was trying to think of what to add and then I just saw someone added Hot For Teacher (Van Halen). I would personally add My Friend of Misery by Metallica (for best song intro).

I don't think anyone's mentioned Hells Bells yet. That there is a damn good intro.

I thought about Hells Bells but something about that song never sat right with me. The rest of the song just doesn't match the badassness of the intro and the chorus is a little flat.

But we're just talking intros here. "Sirius" by Alan Parsons Project has an awesome intro that is instantly recognizable, but I don't think anyone really liked the rest of the song all that much.

Great thread. Some of my favorite openings:
Anna Molly
Don't much care for the rest of the song but The Stone has a cool intro.
Money for Nothing
The Trooper

And my favorite outro: Bark at the Moon

That would be "Eye in the Sky", one of APP's biggest hits. "Sirius" is the intro. Very popular at one time for pro sports team intros when it came out.

APP has great intro's. Can "I Robot", although almost 6 minutes long, be considered an intro to "I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You"?

another The Who one - Won't Get Fooled Again
Pink Floyd - Money (that 7/8 bass line is greatness)
Hickory High

Thinking of songs that I enjoy where the first thing that I think about is the intro....

LZ - When the Levee Breaks
Wings - Band On The Run
Metallica - Astronomy (Blue Oyster Cult cover)
Dave Matthews Band - Ants Marching
Arcade Fire - Wake Up
My Morning Jacket - Circuital
The Naked and Famous - Young Blood
Paul Simon - Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes

A lot more have already been mentioned on the thread.

This may be silly, but I can't think of a song intro that solicited a sharper spike in emotion than Stone Cold's intro back in the day.

This and Schism by Tool. Starts at 5:18.
