Maybe one of these decades the wife will let me buy a Blu-Ray.
I would hope not. Blu-Ray is on its way out. Everything will be digital in the not too distant future.

Digital doesn't deliver a lot that the physical disc provides, especially in terms of sound. The file on an actual disc is what... 10 times larger than a compressed digital download? Physical discs will be around a while.
New movies on digital are in 4K now, there's not a ton of reasons left to stick to physical media, potentially sound but most people don't have really discerning taste there (or just don't have great systems). Not to mention you can get the films a month before the blu-ray release.

I used to have a huge blu-ray collection and I've slowly phased it out in favor of digital. So much easier to manage and I can watch from anywhere with a few clicks.

Did you transfer your old titles to digital on a media server?

Personally if I buy a movie - which is maybe 4-5 times a year nowadays - I buy the BR+DVD+Digital.

Then I play the BR at home, use the Digital while travelling and sell the DVD for $5 knocking down my net cost.

My other thing for FREE moves is - almost all of my relatives have no clue what Digital means so when I visit their houses I scour their movie collection and take all the Digital movie inserts (I usually ask).

I also give my parents gifts of BR/Digital combos all the time - they love discs - and I steal put to good use, the digital inserts.

I have a blu-ray player that I've used approximately 3 times.

At this point, if special features aren't available in a digital format (itunes, amazon, etc.) I just watch the them on YouTube.

And this from a guy who was really "in" to owning the physical media up until about 3 years ago.

Maybe this is a separate thread idea, but I've been considering making everything digital as well. I have a ton of dvds and blu rays, and I know you can burn dvds through handbrake, but is there a cloud or something where I can store all of itThe dvd rips from handbrake, the digital copies form my blue ray, and any future digital only realeas?

4K Blu-ray is still superior to 4K streaming. Until the technology can allow me to have every movie I own available in 4K Blu-ray quality via streaming, I'm not switching. My general rule is that I stream via iTunes movies I haven't yet seen, but if it's a movie I like and have seen, I buy/watch it on 4K Blu-ray. The picture and sound are absolutely stunning. And just FYI, 4K Blu-rays all come with the regular Blu-ray versions as well, and the players themselves aren't too expensive either. I got a top of the line Sony 4K player for around $180.

Been wondering the same as well. I have over 100 Blu-rays burned to an exterior hard drive (mainly for easy access / research / screenwriting purposes), but I'd love to be able to store all of them in a cloud. I've messed around with Plex quite a bit, which is great, but even though the movies are accessible anywhere, they still have to live on a hard drive somewhere that's never turned off.

Isn't the cloud just a bunch of hard drives somewhere that never turn off?

Almost everything I had came with an iTunes copy so didn't need to. Have held onto a handful of blu-rays that didn't.

It is, but most people aren't really going to notice the difference. And when it comes to convenience and storage it's not even close.

And I think I've had 3 blu-ray players, I totally don't knock anyone who wants to stay with a traditional media library. Were I single I would have

I'm guessing that all of y'all who are saying that digital is better and we should get rid of 4K/Blu-ray don't have some type of home theater setup in their living room or a dedicated room with surround sound and the whole nine yards?

Digital is not going to provide the audio necessary to run a true surround sound system. Not to mention that if you start streaming all 4K content over the Internet, your bandwidth will need to be increased if your provider even offers it, and you're going to quickly hit your bandwidth limit for the month.

I have a media room with the whole 9 yards, projector, etc. It's nice, but I still really enjoy laying bad watching a smaller TV with no surround sound. There are certain movies that make a difference, but in general, the difference (sound quality between digital vs bluray) is not enough to me.

Watching Star Wars Rebels. What does it say when a cartoon can pull more emotion in 30 mins than TLJ did in however long it was?

Don't think anyone has claimed it's better, just that it offers a lot of benefits.

And I do stream 4k all the time and don't have any bandwidth issues, but I also pay for a great connection because I know I stream and download a lot of content.

This thread reminded me that one of my top 3 entertainment moments ever was seeing the Charge of the Rohirrim in a fully tricked out theater room at Bjorn's AV. That was awesome, and it's why I want a theater in my next house.

Can you rip 4K Blu-ray yet? I've got about a 100 movies on my Plex box as well and I absolutely love it.

I'm sure you can, I'm just afraid they'd be too big. A regular Blu-ray is already 25-35Gb. So I'm guessing a 4K Blu-ray rip would be around 100Gb or so.

Dang, I'm still on 1080p and regular Blu-ray everywhere. Never even seen a movie in 4k. Our main living room TV is 4k, but it's not hooked to a receiver or 4k player just because of the setup we have. I've watched some 4k youtube promotional videos streamed on it but that's it.

Lolpoor.

Edit:. I will add that I've had this tv for a few years and didn't even realize there was 4k content on YouTube until a few months ago and actually kind of forgot the tv was even 4k ready.

I was surfing around on the apps and saw some some 4k content. Started watching it and was mindblown. Started yelling at my wife across house to get in here and see this.

Lolpoor and dumb.
