But Wright was an atypical hire for Marvel in that he doesn't shoot a lot of coverage, which leaves the studio fewer editorial options. If they didn't like what Wright had shot (which would be strange because he's been attached to the project since 2006), they'd have difficulty recutting his footage (which could lead to extensive reshoots). This is total speculation, but don't be surprised if Wright's replacement comes from TV and/or is generally known for serving the studio's interests.

Little known fact, but Marvel basically takes over their film(s) in editorial, which has pissed off a bunch of their directors. Wright wasn't going to let that happen, it sounds like.

It definitely seems strange considering what a pet project this was for Wright. Sucks as I was really intrigued to see what he was going to do with it, definitely seems odd that there'd be creative differences at this point in the process though.

I'm not surprised at all that Marvel has that much control over their films, after all has any other studio had ever single one of their movies exist in the same overall universe? That requires a lot of overall control. If directors are not willing to work with that, then that is their problem. Marvel has had nothing but success with their films and their MCU is continuing full steam ahead.

That being said, one director leaving one project, especially one like Wright, which while I'm disappointed, I can't say I'm that surprised. I'm sure Marvel will find a worthwhile director who will make Ant-Man a strong Marvel film.

Dang, would have loved to see Wright's take on Ant-Man.

Still, in Feige we trust.

Agreed, for the most part. My only real issue is that most of the Marvel movies are fairly flat-looking and bland, speaking strictly from cinematography point of view. Again, I totally get why they go for the lowest common denominator (for lack of a better term) in terms of look, but still, it would have been nice to have some actual style.

You should watch them in 3D if that's your complaint

Really bummed about this news, also sad for Wright. He's been set to do this for a while and I was psyched he was doing it. Marvel has a pretty distinct vision and what he wants must not be aligning with theirs. I've been happy with most of their films, hopefully they choose a decent replacement.

And I should clarify... the Marvel movies always look cool, in terms of colors and set design, etc. I'm only talking about shooting style. It's all pretty uninspired and generically shot, for the most part.

Stuff going around the inter webs:

quote:
The word from people on the crew is Wright got booted for being REALLY behind schedule and being ineffective at righting the ship and getting it back on track. Production has been bleeding money for a month and Marvel got fed up with him and they lost their confidence in his ability to manage a production of this size.

Yeah, but that's kind of my point. I'm just saying it would have been nice to see a more dramatically-lit, kinetically-shot Marvel movie.

But if what Nonregdrummer09 just posted is true, sounds like there were much bigger issues going on.

May I ask what this means? I read this to mean "shaky-cam" style but I'm sure that's not what you mean.

I hope not. The shaky-cam fad is the #1 most annoying and pathetic thing hollywood is currently running with.

Thinking back to CA 2 I know that's not what you mean because it was all shaky cam and was the worst thing about that movie.

Not shaky-cam. And I'm not even talking action, specifically. Just the cinematography in general. Wright's movies have a rich, well-lit look. Most Marvel movies do not. They don't look bad, but they could look way better.

As for the action, Wright just has a cool way of moving the camera during fight scenes. It's not shaky-cam at all. There's just a certain kind of energy that I can't really describe.

If that version of events is true, then just ugggh...very disappointing. I loved Scott Pilgrim and was very much looking forward to Wright's take on a Marvel franchise film. I get Marvel's stance of making sure their comic world is accurately portrayed and seamless from film to film. But too much homogeneity and you risk them becoming generic, throwaway movies. (many would probably argue most of these films already are)

Paul Rudd is a really great talent, but don't lessen his impact or expect his charisma to carry all the expectations of this film by making the directing/cinematography/writing/etc. generic.

The actors don't have the option to walk? Of course they do, Marvel can't force Paul Rudd to act.

I'm sure Marvel will be able to replace Wright with someone solid.

is just an outrageous thing to say from someone who is not usually given to overblowing a situation. Step back from the ledge, Devin.

^ There's more to it than just the Wright/Ant-Man thing. About to post a state-of-the-Marve-union thread, basically explaining why he said that.

You mean a movie that is insanely popular among kids, has grossed more merchandising dollars for Disney than probably all other Pixar movies combined and has spawned three sequels/spinoffs?

Yeah, I'm sure Disney is shaking right now....

Here's the thing about Cars: adults didn't like it, but kids (you know, the target market for the films) absolutely LOVE it.

And, as already stated above, it's not like Pixar didn't rebound right away. Did Pixar peak with Cars?

OK, I searched the three threads we have for this, and the main board, but won't be surprised if I missed this being reported already.

Three directors are being looked at for the director position of Ant-Man

TCTTS, looking forward to your opinion both to the quality of these directors and the validity of the rumor as always (and to mocking me if I'm Germaning this one).
