Really interesting tweet from Edgar Wright this afternoon regarding the story/casting:

Blech. Do not like at all. The guy is 70 years old, this completely rules out the possibility of seeing Hank as Goliath/Giant-man/Yellowjacket/etc.

I've definitely written my fair share of nerdy stuff on this board, but some of you need to take a step back from the ledge and have some perspective.

They're actually MAKING an Ant-Man movie.

With Paul Rudd and Michael freaking Douglas. Directed by EDGAR WRIGHT. How can anyone possibly be disappointed by this news? I'm not some Michael Douglas cheerleader or anything, but what has he done to deserve a thumbs down? Why not celebrate the fact that his casting likely means this is a pretty great script? In much the same way Redford committed to the rumored-to-be-amazing Captain America: Winter Soldier.

I have no idea what Goliath/Giant-man/Yellowjacket is, but it sounds ridiculous. Flashbacks to Silver Age Ant-Man, though? That sounds awesome. Like SP, I know nothing about Ant-Man, so maybe I'm just talking out of my ass here. Either way, based on that amazingly-cool Comic Con reel, and the talent involved so far, I just don't see the point of b*tching about some of the crazier-sounding elements that may not be included.

All this does is get me even more fired up for the insanity that is summer 2015.

Awesome news. This sounds like a fresh angle on a Superhero story, and with the talent attached could be cool.

Will there be a young Hank Pym portrayed as well for flashbacks? Are they going to retcon in an Ant-Man that existed in the 70s-80s?

And didn't everyone want to see a Batman where Bruce Wayne is old and tutors a new Batman or Nightwing?

Sounds like Marvel is thinking a few steps ahead of DC again.

It'd be awesome if they got Bale to play this kind of role in BvS or the subsequent Bat-fleck movie.

I hope Bale doesn't go anywhere near that (which he won't).

I've always felt that, with Edgar Wright on board to write/direct, that this was intended from the start to the closest thing to a comedy Marvel would get.

Rudd just reaffirmed that thought to me. This will be a quirky film, for sure.

Ha, all this Marvel/DC posturing is getting pretty hilarious...

- This past Friday, Warner Bros./DC moves Superman/Batman from July 17, 2015 to May 6, 2016. May 6 being the very same day Marvel has an unannounced movie currently scheduled (likely set to be Dr. Strange).

- In pace of Batman/Superman, WB slides Pan (their big-budget Peter Pan reboot) in the old S/B July 17 spot.

- Now, Marvel has just announced they're moving Ant-Man from July 31, 2015 to... July 17, 2015, the very same date WB set for Pan just a few days ago.

Ultimately, I'm betting none of these movies end up going head-to-head, though. Pan will likely move to July 31, while the rumored Dr. Strange will likely seek another summer 2016 date. Still, it's pretty funny watching these studios go at it like this...

Also, Bill Pope is set as the cinematographer. He shot all three Matrix movies, the original three Spider-Man movies, plus Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and The World's End. So, if anything, this movie will at least look cool as hell.

Awesome, love her. And she was insanely hot in Desolation of Smaug. Was great to see her again, and glad her profile keeps rising.

Now get Pegg and Frost involved in some form or fashion.

What makes her even hotter for whatever reason is that she had a kid with & married a production assistant on Lost. PAs are like the lowest guys on the totem pole on any given set. Gives a small glimmer of hope to the rest of us...

She also stopped acting after Lost because of her child and only came back after Peter Jackson personally got a hold of her Husband to send along the message he wanted her. Gotta respect that. At least at that point her child was older.

To the Micheal Pena point, he isn't just funny, I think he is also a pretty decent dramatic actor. He does a good job of bringing an appropriate amount of levity to serious roles, imo.

End of Watch being a good example. I also liked him on The Shield.

Whoa, Edgar Wright is off the project per Borys Kit at Variety.

Holy smokes: Edgar Wright just left ANT-MAN.

@Borys_Kit 20m
Wright left "due to differences in their vision of the film" says Marvel.

@Borys_Kit 20m
"The decision to move on is amicable and does not impact the release date on July 17, 2015. A new director will be announced shortly."

Damn it, that SUCKS.

Wright was the major reason I was looking forward to this. Lots of movie-folk on Twitter seem to think "creative differences" in this instance most likely means Marvel wanted to keep with the safe, homogenous mold of most of their films, while Wright obviously wanted to be Wright and do something a little more daring, a little more stylized.

What's fishy is that Wright has been developing this movie since 2006... and they're just now having creative differences? Something doesn't add up. The movie is fully cast and was literally about start shooting (though some have been wondering why it wasn't already shooting... now we know).

One theory is that Wright may have been offered a Star Wars spinoff (which would be AMAZING), but the timing doesn't feel right. The next spinoff won't hit 'til 2018, and Wright could have easily done Ant-Man first for 2015, and then followed up with Star Wars immediately after, and still had plenty of time. Not to mention, they're both Disney. No way Disney would pull him off one of their own projects this late.

I wonder if Ant-Man even makes that summer 2015 release now? No doubt they'll slide another director in immediately, but it's going to be super-tight. Kind of weird to see wheels come of the well-oiled Marvel machine like this, so late in the game.
