I think I can explain the big difference in reviews. A lot of the complaints are valid complaints and ones I had as well. However, they are mostly nitpicky complaints. Fix the issues and the movie becomes top one or two Star Trek films. Don't fix them and the movie still stands as a very good film that is very enjoyable. I believe that the critics that hated it thought the issues were bigger than those that liked the movie.

Makes sense. I'm no Trek purist. In fact, I only saw Wrath of Khan for the first time earlier this year, and thought it was kind of horrible. I can see how it blew minds back in '82, but it just doesn't hold up well at all. Point being, whatever they've messed with canon-wise, I doubt I'll care or even notice.

There are other issues that don't have to do with it being a Star Trek movie at all such as the common thought of it being rushed. I agree completely, and think they could have added 30 minutes of just dialog scenes to fill plot holes and they movie would have improved. But, again, the movie was still enjoyable with the small plot holes.

There are some movies I feel the need to dissect and those that I think need to be enjoyed for what they are. In the end, all that matters is that I was entertained for a couple of hours.

I agree, MarkoRamius.

We thought it was OK.

My wife and I enjoyed it in 2D, but for us it didn't have the punch of the first movie featuring this younger cast.

There wasn't anything special or noteworthy or new or of enduring value, IMHO.

And except for being the next installment of a beloved franchise I've faithfully followed, I wouldn't have liked it as much as I did.

There is good character development, humor, honor, logic, gut feelings, loyalty, friendship, revenge and plenty of action, including both space battles and fist fights.

And because it is the latest offering from that franchise (with all the characters, characteristics, style and storyline so familiar), we were very well entertained and at times even moved, but certainly not overly impressed and definitely never wowed.

However, we did feel at home and involved

I think its well worth seeing by Star Trek fans and other viewers for completeness, continuity and exciting cinema, but it might disappoint the most ardent and/or adventurous of Trekkies with its sameness even while satisfying others who aren't looking for more.

Because, IMO, this flick pretty much "boldly" goes exactly and only where we've all watched the USS Enterprise and her crew go many times before.

It seems that the Stephen A. Smith commercial on ESPN would be a bit funnier once I've seen the movie.

Great movie, even if some of the plotholes were huggggge.

Benedict and surprisingly Chris Pine did wonderful jobs.

Needed more Scottie. And more space battles

Saw it in true imax as well. Goes full frame. Looks great

It was a decent popcorn flick. They did well with the humor and the developing relationships.

However, the story was lazy and predictable. Why start a new timeline if you are going to tell basically the same story?

Plus as a Star Trek purist I found it really annoying that they showed Kronos with the moon already exploded. That shouldn't happen for another 30 or so years even in the new time line.

I really enjoyed watching it. I liked the action, I liked the humor, I liked the characters. There were definitely parts of my brain that weren't engaged, but those that were, were happy.

Saw it last night. Yeah. I geeked out the whole time. Great throwback in there too. I really hope Shatner will suck up his pride and do a cameo in the third. I might ask him today if I see him.

I liked it. A little over the top.

Not sure I like bringing dead characters back.

I think Kahn deserves another movie. Not enough of his sheer evil to just be done with him.

Definitely more dialogue setting up each action scene would have been nice.. but it was already a long movie.

And did I miss the token red shirt guy die this time in a quasi hilarious manner?

Just returned from seeing it. I liked it far more than Iron Man 3, but probably not quite as much as the first Star Trek movie featuring this younger cast. That first one just felt so much more lively and fresh, it felt new. This one, not as much.

That's not to say that I found anything lacking in this cast. Just that the new-ness of it all has worn off I guess.

Loved Cumberbatch.

I had tried everything I could to avoid news on this movie. Even so, when Kirk was beating the crap out of Harrison on Kronos ... and it seemed he was punching a robot ... I knew WHO he really was right then and there.

I thought it was great, almost as much so as the first.

Spoilerish....

I did have a little problem following the relationship between Harrison and the admiral. At what point did they stop working together and why?

My guess to the above question is shortly before the movie started is when the rift occurred.

Most of the reviews I've seen have mentioned plot holes. There were definitely some, but overall I found the movie enjoyable. Cumberbatch definitely stole the show...he was incredible.
Simplebay
How long do you want to ignore this user?
my biggest gripe was:

why did (are we allowed to say it now?) go to Kronos? and this just so happened to be the exact place Marcus wanted the Enterprise to go? but yet they weren't working together. And Benedict's character was obviously not wanting the missles to be fired at him. And as far as Marcus knew, the Enterprise was going to fire them, so why the need to go out there after them at all?

That whole part was confusing to me.
Ganondorf

Simplebay's comment echoes my own after leaving the theater. It doesn't make sense.
Simplebay
How long do you want to ignore this user?
it honestly seemed like the writers were like:

1. we want a bombing in london, and you know who to run away
2. We want the enterprise stranded
3. we want the enterprise in peril to get back to earth and crash on earth, and a twist villain.

lets fill in the gaps. seems like the script wasn't written linearly for sure

that being said, 100x better than Iron Man 3. loved it nonetheless.

The way I see it, Khan knew Marcus wanted to start a war, and he knew roughly how Marcus wanted to start a war. So, pre-movie, he switched out all the long range missiles with his people. After the attack, he fled to kronos knowing that Marcus would send a ship with the special missiles after him as a perfect war-starting opportunity.

The came the gamble, he had to hope whatever captain it was would prefer to capture him than kill him. He knew with capture, he would be reunited with his crew in the missiles and be able to manipulate his way from there.
Simplebay

so he went to the neutral zone, a perfect place for them to test FIRE the missles, when he actually didn't want them to fire the missles at any costs.

in my opinion, knowing Starfleet regulations, they would've tested their missles on an (what they thought was uninhabited planet) rather than violate protocol by going into the nuetral zone.

and Khan didnt know who Kirk was or if he'd be the one sent after him, or that Kirk would be the type to violate Starfleet regulations and go into the nuetral zone rather than (accidentally) kill Khan's crew by firing the missles.

Kahn didn't go to the neutral zone, he went all the way through it to Kronos/Qo'noS, the Klingon Homeworld. The planet wasn't uninhabited, only the specific region that he fled to. Still it was a pretty big gamble that starfleet wouldn't fire the missiles.

It's unclear why he wanted to go to Kronos because its not very clear what he was planning to do when he got there. All we know is that he was previously working on anti-Klingon weapons and intelligence. Presumably, his expertise with the Klingons was a part of his plan. I don't think Kahn knew the Marcus intended to start the war he was preparing for until the Enterprise showed up with the missiles. Marcus didnt plan to start the war right then and there until Kahn presented him with the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. It was never a trap laid by Kahn, because Kahn assumed his crewmen were dead. The entire movie was a chess game between Kirk, Kahn, and Admiral Marcus with each adapting on the fly to each other's moves.

Just got back from seeing it in IMAX 3D. My group really enjoyed it and I think most of the negatives that people are mentioning on here and in reviews are really nitpicking. This isn't your old Star Trek universe.

I thoroughly enjoyed it for what it was, a summer action blockbuster set in JJ's reimagined Star Trek universe. Pine and Cumberbatch both delivered great performances to top off the excellent, and nearly non-stop, action sequences.

Side note for those asking, I really think the 3D added something, rather than distracting from the movie. This was a very good 3D conversion. I thought it was awesome in IMAX as well.

Interested in what TCTTS thought of it after seeing it as well.

I also think Ag$08 is dead on, although I do think Kahn did have some hopes of drawing out Marcus.

big Trekkie here... loved loved loved this film. i've already seen it twice. i understand the complaint about too much action, but that's almost a prerequisite for success as a summer blockbuster these days. if this gets more people interested in star trek as a whole, i'm all for it.

and i think the writers did a better job with the meaningful analogy to terrorism/9-11/drones than people are giving them credit for.

My only complaint is they didn't need to keep Kahn alive. They had 72 other genetically enhanced folks to siphon blood from.

I wish there would have been more of Cumberbatch raising hell and there was something about the way the climax between spock and Kahn ended that just felt a little flat to me.

Bill, that was the only plot hole that really bothered me. I guess you could explain it by saying they didn't have time to test and confirm that the blood from the others had the same abilities. Also would have made the last scene less dramatic.
BillOnCapitolHill
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Really oglaw? I felt Spock was super pissed about losing his only friend. The only line I wish they would have incorporated was " I'll chase him round the Moons of Nibia, and round the Antares Maelstrom, and round Perdition's flames before I give him up!" And Spock should have been the one to deliver it. Talk about character development...

That would have been a better line than yelling "Kaaaaahhhhnnnn!!"

Didn't McCoy say something earlier in the film about the cryo technology being beyond him?
BillOnCapitolHill
How long do you want to ignore this user?
He said he didn't know how to thaw them and keep them alive (then he magically can when he needs a cyro tank for Kirk, then he can again when he needs to pull Kirk out). But that is beside the point, the blood isn't necrotic you don't need to revive the sleeper to take blood out. Just get them lukewarm.

I'd like to point out that I called Marcus' organization in the other Star Trek thread just not Cumberbatch's character.

Saw it last night with my wife and another couple. We all loved it. May go again today with my boys and my Dad.

For context, I like the original series, have seen all of the original films multiple times (except for the Next Gen ones), and loved the reboot.
