Newly Restored Uncut 35mm Print with New Subtitles!

A desperate 16th century village hires seven samurai to protect it from marauders in this crown jewel of Japanese cinema. No other film seamlessly weaves philosophy and entertainment, delicate human emotions and relentless action. Breathtaking, agile and overflowing with a delightfully self-mocking sense of humor, Seven Samurai is Akira Kurosawa's most well known film and inspired the U.S. remake The Magnificent Seven. Toshiro Mifune and Takashi Shimura star. Official Web Site

That's cool. I wasn't super "up" on seeing a 207 minute movie on a Monday night, anyway.

Okay, I had a pic here of Mr. Burns doing the "Excellent, Smithers," but the site doesn't allow remote hosting. Oh well.

Stuff from the movie.

Dude should have known, it wasn't a tie.

Remember that shot in The Phantom Menace where the droid armies tanks come over the hill? It's not a coincidence.

Screen captures off dvd's always seem to distort. They come out 720x480, when they should be 640x480. I don't know why.

DG, aquatint yourself w/ the works of John Ford and then consider that statement.

John Ford came onto the set of one of Kurosawa's movies with a bunch of Army officials during the occupation. He asked an assistant if he could meet the director. Kurosawa, just told that an American wanted to meet him, demurred, as he was too busy. A few days later he found out that he had snubbed his hero - he was sore regretful.

They didn't meet in person for another 10 years or so and Ford gave him a hat, similar to his own. Kurosawa, from that point on, was almost always seen in that hat or one very similar.

And it's not just enemies over a hill - it's enemies over the hill and pan down towards the heroes. Michael Jeck told me it was the first use of that shot, and I believe him.

Kurosawa's older brother was a very successful movie theater MC during the silent era. They would talk along with the film - good ones were pretty well known celebrities. But talkies came along and his career died, so he committed suicide.

I watched The Searchers on TBS a couple of weeks ago, and noticed another classic Lucas rip off. Martin dropping off the big boulder overlooking Scar's village - to try and rescue Natalie Woods was copied verbatim in the Anakin rescuing mom from the Sandpeople shot.

so he took it from Ford, I don't know about the pan down but all the Indians on the ridge shot was in Stagecoach circa '39

But they just stood there, like in all of those Mighty Mouse cartoons.

Kurosawa's was a much more dynamic shot.
