No chance for Hidden Fortress?

It's not my favorite by a long shot - if R2D2 and C3PO annoy you, wait till you meet the originals. But it does have a very cool Yaru fight (yaru being a 12 foot spear) that I'd compare with the sword fight in Rob Roy, inasmuch as it's pretty long and you get the feel that these guys know that one will likely be dead pretty soon, and that's not all that cool.

And though it doesn't get as much play in the comparison game, it even has a very cool chase scene (in which, it's probably just as well to let it go, it's much to far out of range - not for long).

Another oft-overlooked Lucas connection is the scene in Yojimbo where Mifune first proves his worth (the insulting the mule scene in Leone's Fistfull of Dollars).

One of the gangsters shows Sanjuro his prison tatoo - "Do you know what this means?" and "I'll hang if they ever catch me." That would be a bit of a stretch to connect to the "I've got the death sentence on four systems" line if it weren't for the fact that in both pictures, very soon thereafter, the braggarts arm ended up lying on the ground unattached.

Maybe, but I didn't discover this thread until it had nearly hit 80 posts. I could have worked with DG's response but left it alone. Your thoughts?

Was that to you sre me, not sure. Maybe should of been on more of a typical circle jerk type thread instead of an inane back and forth.

I thought it didn't matter who the reply was to, if it was immediately after mine I could use it? I have to check manual.

I think it depends on number of posters on thread, could be wrong.

Just a reminder that there are no Kurosawa movies this weekend. You'll all have to make do with Flying Nun episodes on TVLand.

Yeah, that works out for me since I'm busy all weekend anyway. But, I still plan on seeing Throne of Blood on 4/11.

I'm thinking about going all three days 11-13.

I definitely want to see Throne and Yojimbo, but I'm also starting to get interested in The Bad Sleep Well.

Three days, three Japanese movies.

That's a lot of Mifune.

Yup.

No Kurosawa this weekend.

I watched Three Colors: Blue though.

It was foreign and good and stuff.

So I do get to see Yojimbo, sweet. In honor of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior I shall go see Yojimbo on Easter Sunday.

If you choose not to bring anything Kurosawa related to this thread, I'm going to have to ask you to leave.

The Voyager Criterion Collection laser disc of Hidden Fortress replicates the exquisite black and white photography achieved by Kurosawa and cinematographer Kazuo Yamasaki. It is interesting to note that although Kurosawa has used a variety of cinematographers over the many decades of his career, the images are always stamped with the Kurosawa look, emphasizing powerful screen compositions. The subtle range of grays is accurate. Each detail, obsessively captured by the director, is duplicated clearly on the laser disc pressing. Focus is consistently sharp. Source material for Hidden Fortress is in pristine condition. The image is presented in approximately a 2:1 aspect ratio while the film was shot in 2.35 Tohoscope. While few images are compromised significantly by the cropping, there are a number of instances where major characters on the extremes of the screen are partially cut off, resulting in a violation of Kurosawa's perfectionist composition. White English titles appear in the bottom black band of the letterboxed image.

Don't go thinking a quick cut and paste is going to make everything OK.

You've been warned.

My whole life has been a series of cut and pastes.

That makes sense, think about it. [/odd stare]
