The screenshots, or just my general nastiness?

I cropped the screenshots to show a 1.66:1 matte (what the theater manager told me they were using). I definitely remember the head being chopped off for a good bit of the wood cutting scene, at least until he sat down to watch.

Overall, It wasn't horrible - but it wasn't good either.

Lunch was really good (sesame encrusted tuna on some sort of masa thing from Red Onion), and the bird movie trailer looked really cool.

And pickles, no.

The Three Stooges concept, and most of the gags, were lifted almost entirely from the early works of Eisenstein.

I think pickles is thinking of the fact that The Magnificent Seven was based on Seven Samurai and somehow he is confusing Yule Brenner w/ Curly and/or Curly Joe.

no, think about it for a minute, i'll get you started...

both have numbers in their titles: the three stooges, the seven samurai.

the similarities are endless, one more conversation starter...the super bad ass swordsman guy, you know the one who wants to practice all the time, he kinda reminds me of Larry except for the hair

The image above clearly ends all speculation. The Eisensteinian proto-Larry holding up the figurative Shemp, as the "Moe" (the Czarist soldiers) march down the steps menacingly.

what about the idiots in the hidden fortress, and the general(moe)?

That was actually more of Kurosawa paying homage to the Screech Learns to Drive episode of Saved by the Bell.

What ever became of Cubby?

Just a brief comment, my copy of Throne of Blood arrived a couple of days ago. It has two sets of subtitles, one by Linda Hoagland, which was the version we saw in the theater and was commissioned for the theatrical re-relase. The other version was by Donald Ritchie, who's written a buttload of Kurosawa books, and it was created specifically for the DVD.

A quick comparison reveals:

Hoagland's version is more formal sounding: I long to see the joyous face of our great lord! which has a sort of Shakepearian tone to it. Ritchies is more modern and natural: Let's hurry, the lord is waiting!

I only compared a couple of shots, but I assume it continues.

DVD also has a commentary by Michael Jeck. Again, skipping ahead, I watched the finale with the commentary on, and he got pretty excited about all of the 100% real arrows (save one) being really shot (save one) into and around Mifune. Mifune, years later, on being congratulated for acting so frightened assured the congratulator that there was no acting in that scene, he was terrified.

It seems like those two translations a quite a bit different. I mean wouldn't the Japanese word for face have to be said. I liked the very formal Shakespearean dialogue. Indeed

The Ritchie version didn't even call it Spider's Web Castle, referring instead to "the forest Castle".

I'd dismiss it for the more formal reading except for the fact that Donald Ritchie probably knew Kurosawa as well as anybody (he worked with Kurosawa when he translated his autobiography), and he was even on the set several times during the filming of Throne. He probably has as much qualification to say what tone Kurosawa was trying to convey as anyone.

But so far, I like the more formal tranlation as well.

Paramount theater here in Austin will be showing Seven Samurai this summer, I will have to catch it. Afterwards, can I join the club?

I bought Ritchie's book on Kurosawa, and started reading it. I've read most of the part on Ikiru.

I got Hidden Fortress, Rashomon, Sanjuro, and Ran on DVD for Christmas! I plan to pick up Ikiru when it comes out later this month.

Cold in Canada, perhaps. We're all very comfortable down here in Texas, Dr. Jones. All very comfortable, indeed.
