Thinking back, what other commercially viable rap came out in '94?

Yikes, unintentional thread hijack.

Reading back I find this list particularly interesting:
quote:
Best delivery:
1. Ice Cube
2. DMX
3. Notorious B.I.G.
4. LL Cool J (1984-1992)
5. Kool Keith

I want to add Snoop or maybe Chuck D but I dont know where'd they go.

Not a thread hijack. Anytime you're throwing out a superlative, it helps to have comparative measures. Ready to Die came out in 1994 and was an instant classic. Lauded critically and went multi-platinum. To me, to be the best rapper ever, you have to have tasted some form of commercial success and only a few rappers have the actual chart numbers to match their skill level.

Fair enough. I didnt realize Ready to Die was a '94 album (it's a '95 in my mind).

You have to consider popularity and talent but also (more importantly?) influence and total catalog. My only knock against Biggie, for instance, is that to be the best rapper ever, one really needs to have a catalog of more than 2 albums totaling 25-30 total tracks. (Nirvana has a similar problem when discussing best all time rock bands.)

Illmatic is a great album, but it got a major boost when Jay dissed Nas but gave it props in "Takeover." That's a huge reason it was re-released.

Either way, saying Nas should be in the conversation is pretty laughable.

On the subject of BIG, I've recently come to the conclusion that Juicy is the greatest hip hop song ever, edging out Nuthin But A G Thang.

Man, Juicy is great, but that production is so whack. Soooo whack.

It's got to be the best rags to riches rap ever, though. "We used to fuss when the landlord dissed us. No heat, wonder why Christmas missed us. Birthdays was the worst days; now we sip champagne when we thirsty."

The production, the mix of the instruments. This is totally independent of BIGs performance on it and his lyrics.. those are amazing and definitely worth noting as the reason this is a top hip hop song.

Compared to other hip hop at the time, even other tracks on the album, the instruments sound 'whack'. the drum kit sounds weak and thin, the bass guitar has no real depth - the mix just isn't 'full'. It could just be a personal taste I suppose.

I got you. Personally I think it just adds to the song. In a way, it gives it character. It is a perfect song. It just all works together.

It's funny that in the movie Notorious they depicted Biggie as being against recording on that track. He almost never recorded the greatest rap song of all time.

I listened to about three quarters of the music on this thread today so I could better appreciate the artists. What I figured out is that the Beastie Boys had more talent than any of these jokers.
