Seriously? How on earth can you think that's expensive?

I pay $12 on average for a matinee movie in LA. And that's fairly cheap. Granted, it's LA, but most decent meals, almost anywhere, cost $8. A two-hour experience that many, many people poured months of hard work into isn't worth $8?

Anything under $10 is a deal these days.

LA is a whole different experience all together too, I'd gladly pay extra if I could watch everything at the Arclight. Visited another that was similar and really nice too, The Grand something maybe?

Was it The Grove?

And yeah, I understand that the LA movie-going experience is different, but I just don't see how $8 is considered expensive for two-hour entertainment, regardless of what it is.

Maybe, similar in-theater setup to Arclight and nice bar/lounge upstairs? Was visiting at the time so don't remember specific location, I won't be living out there for a few years yet

And I agree, 8 bucks to me isn't too bad here in Houston. Caught a matinee at few weeks ago that I was I think 6.50 and was thinking how cheap it was.

I don't think Cinemark was charging us any less than $6 for a matinee in CS before Premiere showed up in '06.

Angelika is much smaller= bigger margins necessary to be able to bring in arthouse movies nobody else has.

The Landmark and The Bridge are the only other two theaters I can think of that have bars. I don't think the Grove does, but I haven't been there in a while.

After a quick search I think it was The Landmark, need to ask my friend and see.

Cool place in any case.

Cinemark didn't have matinee or student pricing before Premier, it was just a flat $6

Once Premier was built, they changed up their pricing to match competition

Box Office Mojo lists the 2010 average price at $7.95.

Star Village in Lake Worth is uber cheap. I think we pay 7 bucks for non-matinee and they have digital projection. Hands down my favorite theater in the DFW area.

I just paid $20 for a ticket to Tron in Imax 3D...now that's ridiculous. You have to sit like right in the middle for the 3D to even work right. Here's to being a dewsche and showing up an hour early.

Wow, I paid $17 for the best IMAX 3D theater in LA (The Bridge) and also have reserved seating (tomorrow). Where did you pay $20?

I'm still shocked that most theaters in the country don't have reserved seating. Not to keep harping on the LA thing, but it's hard to find a theater in this city that doesn't have it. I can't remember the last time I stood in line for a movie or didn't have great seats. It has to cost next to nothing to number each seat and upgrade your website with seat selection. There is absolutely no down side to doing this and it's insanely convenient.

$20? Mine was $17.50 and that was with a $2.00 service charge. Great movie BTW. The critics are pretty dead on about it. Except that I liked it more than they did.

Hi TCTTS. Btw. I'm done with Megan Fox. You can have her back. I'm ready for some Olivia Wilde.
TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?
When did I claim Megan Fox?

And just to rub it in, I coordinated a photo shoot for GQ with Olivia Wilde back in 2006. I can neither confirm nor deny that I was standing next to her as she was (more or less) topless. And I may or may not have caught various glimpses while in the vicinity of her (maybe) topless figure. Seriously, though, she was super-cool and fun to work with. And helping her dry off after a pool shoot wasn't too bad either.

Gotta agree, though while the website costs would be fairly minimal I can see how it would get pretty expensive to upgrade lobbies and booths with new hardware for the big chains.

In any case, yeah, as an avid moviegoer that was one of my favorite things about LA. Loved not having to worry about finding a spot, save seats, etc., and it was nice being with more respectful audiences in general as well.

I forgot about the in-theater hardware/software. That would definitely cost a bit more. And yeah, LA theater crowds are great. Especially at The ArcLight and Landmark. Quiet and respectful, but also clap and cheer at all the right moments. The ArcLight doesn't even allow people in the theater five minutes after the movie has started, regardless of whether or not you have a ticket. Love that.

I've seen people leave and come back in the middle of a movie, but I really have no idea how they enforce the rule. Though, they do make it a point of reminding you on the phone and in the lobby.

If all of that means $20 tickets, then you can keep it.

I've never understood the complaining about the cost of movies. Considering the multitude of entertainment options, $8 is a freaking bargain.

I certainly can see a reason for complaining about the cost of movies. They are something that is a choice. I could care less how many hours a bunch of extreme libs put in to make a movie. They then turn around and fund our current president!

I am very selective about the moves I watch and only go in the afternoon on Tuesdays when the tickets ar $6 and the popcorn is $1 and I bring my own coke.

The idea that it can cost me $50 to take my grandkids to see a cartoon at the movie is insane!

Just paid $7.50 at Rave in Fort Worth.

The Fighter is a very good movie.

For the price they charge on the popcorn, I think Angelika must be dusting the popcorn with the dried E of an endangered species.

I hate old people. I hate old people who bring politics into EVERYTHING even more.

You would thing that the convervative would appreciate capitalism and that the market determines the price of a movie ticket. Maybe Congress should step in and put a maximum on ticket prices so that everyone can afford to go to the movies? Who would be the lib if you thought that?

Obama didn't have anything to do with the price of tickets to Toy Story 3D, ya old fart. This coming from a pretty strong conservative...

I don't have a problem paying $10+ to go to a really nice theatre to see a movie I really want to see. There is a premium attached to seeing things early (particularly limited releases like the OP was referring to) in a nice setting. If it's a problem for you, everything is going to make it's way to the $1 Redbox eventually, or you can usually find a dirty cheaper ghetto theatre. It's up to each person to decide if they care enough about seeing something early to pay the market-determined premium.

THIS. Name another legitimate two-hour entertainment option that's anywhere close to $8.

And oldvalleyrat, there's so much wrong with your way of thinking, I don't even know where to start. The fact that you think all the professionals who puts in six straight months of 15+ hour days per film are "a bunch of extreme libs" is laughable. The film industry is not just actors, producers, and directors. They're the vast minority. And if movies ARE a choice, why are you complaining about the price? The fact that they're a choice means that no one is forcing you to pay to see them. Further, if you're so selective, that counters your point even more. If I hardly ever went to sporting events, I wouldn't complain about paying $90 for a ticket when I did go. Now, if I went three times a week at that price, that'd be a different story. I don't care if you're a bum off the street, the $7 you spend on Tuesdays at the movies is a drop in the hat compared to the bargain you'd be getting even at $10 for two hours of entertainment.

They can charge $8 because obviously enough people are willing to pay $8

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah, that's the going rate.

I hate that the statistic used to judge how popular a movie was on opening weekend (or any weekend) is the gross revenue.

Tell me how many tickets were sold!

I'd much rather hear "10 million people watched this movie" than "$100 million opening weekend!"

Unless you're going to put an inflation tracker next to it, that # is positively worthless.
20ag07
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Not completely. Increased entertainment options and increased in-home viewing experiences work opposite inflation. Plenty of people opt to catch it in their home theaters that were non-existant years ago rather than dealing with leaving the house and dealing with increasingly inconsiderate theatre audiences. Tickets sold doesn't tell the whole story. It's a different world now.

Obviously PR machines are going to trumpet whatever they can- but who is buying that/cares? BoxOfficeMojo tracks the inflation-adjusted stats for the few truly curious.

You should be more worried about the time you spent on that steaming pile of crap of a movie instead of the money. Next time stay home and watch Cool as Ice.
