Pornhub banned traffic from utah in response to a utah law requiring people logging on to pornhub verify their age with ID.

This is the way.

So what you're really saying is that VPN usage is currently spiking in Utah?

This is a real tragedy, as Pornhub is the only source for online porn on the interwebs.

Or so I've heard.

I think it's more that they know their users want to be as anonymous as possible. Which is understandable. It's also not their job to parent your children.

Agree on all points.

I am interested in if the bill sought to regulate just pornhub, or if all the mainstream sites are facing similar issues and pornhub is just the most notable. I dont care enough to actually look, mind you.

Children cannot buy alcohol, cigarettes, drive, go into bars after certain hours, go to strip clubs (unless it's drag), or do lots of things that adults can do and ARE REQUIRED TO SHOW ID TO PARTICIPATE IN THOSE ACTIVITIES.

Why is requiring showing an ID to access porn bad?

Two things can be true at once.

It will hurt their bottom line to go out of their way to stop children from accessing their site, which is a terrible argument.

It will hurt their bottom line because adults will not send their ID to be attached to something shameful, which seems like a pretty good argument.

I would have more sympathy for the company if they didnt brazenly host underage videos and refuse to take them down absent court orders. Reprehensible people. Millstones for all of them.

There is a difference between quickly showing your physical ID to a guy at the door and sharing digital ID information across the internet.

Haven't any number of these "protect kids from porn" laws already been struck down by the courts? Is this law somehow different?

You have to show ID to use a service that is for "adults only". Why does it matter if it's in person, or online? Is online somehow less secure? You use your CC online all the time. You hand your CC to a waiter/waitress all the time and they walk off with it to run it.

I am far more guarded sharing ID online than I am a credit card. If someone runs up fake charges it's very easy to have them reversed or challenged.

I'm not sure I even understand what you're saying, but the odds of a kid getting shot in school are like 1 in 15,000,000. The odds of a minor kid being psychologically affected in an adverse way from watching porn are like 1 in 2. It's way more prevalent and way more dangerous than school shootings.

Danger is a function of probability, and danger is not limited to just being killed or physically harmed. How many more minor children have been harmed by watching porn than have been killed from going to school? That is the proper inquiry. The answer is in the tens of millions, conservatively.
