Depends.

Someone from the internet/app that I haven't met in person before? Coffee, beer, go for a walk - something that takes less than 30 minutes. That way, if they ugly or weird, I can get out of there quick.

I still don't buy that there are functioning adult women who go into a date with the mindset, "This guy sucks, but I want a free meal." I think it's more likely that they discovered that the guy sucked during the course of the meal, and consoled themselves with the fact that they at least got a free meal out of it.
You must not know my older half-sister

Or my younger step-sister.

Or some of my daughter's single friends.

It definitely happens.
My half-sister in her 40's would go on lots of first dates with guys over 70 as she knew sex was off the table, they had $, and they couldn't hear so she didn't have to talk much. She was very pretty so she had no problem finding old guy suckers to drop several hundred on a meal with fine French wine. Now she's older and her looks and figure are gone so she's got no guys interested. As such she's on massive antidepressants, benzos, alcohol, etc and nastier than a yellow jacket nest. She's always on the verge of bankruptcy. Luckily I haven't seen or spoken to her in a long while.

So how do you explain the fodder at work where she says to her coworkers at least I will get a free meal out of it. ??

I believe this is probably what happens. I took a woman to dinner once that seemed to be going well enough, though I could tell she wasn't really into it. Pad for the dinner, walked her to her car, but man she couldn't walk to it fast enough. Was thinking to myself, damn what'd I do? Definitely didn't respond to my follow up text. It's all good.

Sorry about that Jocelyn, wherever you may be

Sounds like you haven't met a girl in her 20's lately. They will 100% go out to dinner with a guy they don't like, just so they can "stunt on the gram" and pretend like they frequent fancy restaurants all the time.

I get this a lot, or at least I did when I went on more dates. It's kinda like when you take a stray out to the middle of nowhere and hope they can't find their way back. Fortunately I play along so she feels she got what she wanted out of it and I've never gotten that lost.

There are really only three viable options for a first date:
1. Demolition derby
2. Couple's police ride-along
3. Panning for gold

I am sure you have way more experience dating women than all the men on this board. Therefore you must be right.

Lol.

I think it's hilarious that you are telling guys that they didn't actually experience what they experienced.

I went on a blind date once in high school. She rushed through it and I didn't pick up the signal. When I asked her out again she told me she didn't date fat and ugly people.

It was great.

The ladies love me, what can I say.

And there's a percentage of women that just want a free meal which is a turn off for me.

I've not once known a woman to admit to doing that.

Here is your key word.

But guys can tell. When you show up and are making an effort and she is on her phone, doesn't engage, and orders the most expensive thing on the menu it's pretty obvious what's going on.

EDIT* See the anecdote below.

Haven't had a first date in 24+ years, so take it for what it's worth. But if I took a girl to dinner and she was on her phone, not engaged, and ordered the most expensive thing on the menu, I would discretely pay for my own meal and leave abruptly once I was done.

The best date is a wedding out of town that you drive to, allowing hours and hours of face time and a free meal

Shockingly it actually worked for me but was risky as hell

This just reminded me that I went on a first date to a wedding. Was 1.5 hours away so not too far.

The venue was her idea. She is the sister of a gal I had known for awhile.

The sister set it up.

Turns out she had been in a sorority at Baylor and wanted to have a guy on her arm because all her sorority sisters would be there with their dudes.

I was used as eye candy.

Oh, she was lovely.

But it became apparent over the course of the day why she didn't have a current dude to be her escort to the wedding.

Not interested.

Weirdest thing was I was starving after the wedding, reception, and then after-party at the bride's parents house. The food was not that great.

When that was all done I asked if she would like to get some real food and she said yes.

We went to Houston's on Kirby. Nice date spot. Not too fancy. Not too casual. Lots of stuff for everyone on the menu.

She wouldn't eat. She's not a vegetarian so I'm not sure what her deal was but she said she would just have a drink while I ate.

So I ate. Maybe she didn't want to look like she ate too much during a day or something? It was odd.

Here to offer a female perspective:

If you don't know each other at all, a quick coffee date is excellent. It gives you both an "out" if the date sucks.

If you maybe know each other through a friend or have been chatting prior, a brewery or wine bar. Plenty of room to extend the date if it's going well but also easy enough to have a drink or two and be done without it being awkward.

Activities are great as long as she knows in advance so she can dress accordingly. Putt putt golf, indoor rock climbing, watching a football game at a bar if you share a love for the same team, wine tasting, one of those things where you pedal around and drink at the same time with a group of people, bowling, a bar with arcade games, tons of options!

But I guess take my answer with a grain of salt because I haven't been on a first date since 2016.
