A recent thread elsewhere got me to thinking - what jobs still require one to wear a business suit on a daily basis?
I guess trial lawyers have to wear a suit - and undertakers. But even at my Fortune 500 company, our top executives rarely, if ever, wear a business suit to work. I was in a meeting last week with one of our executive VPs and he was wearing a polo shirt and khakis just like me. Are there still companies around that require management to dress up in suits? As a point of reference, per our corporate disclosure statements, this executive VP has a mid-range 7 figure income, so wearing a suit has nothing to do with compensation.
I am amazed when I hear of someone owning 8-10 custom suits. I think to myself "damn that's upwards of $10,000 in clothing that I would never wear. WTF? Do they just like dressing up or do they think it will get them ahead? Why?"
I own one suit now that I bought from Haggar Outlet for about $100. I have it for funerals and weddings - otherwise I never wear it. I have one sports coat my wife said I needed that I've yet to wear. I am a senior staff engineer on the highest profile aerospace program in the world and never, ever wear a tie to work, not to mention a suit - even when I'm giving briefings to our customers.
