My position generally dictates that I dress one step above the typical management dress code at my client. This typically means a sport coat at a minimum and is generally a suit with no tie. For an occasional meeting or at any banking client, I will wear a tie.

When I was at Nike, that meant jeans and a t-shirt since their exes often wear running shorts and things like that to meetings. Something about that just felt wrongI enjoy a suit.

Nothing wrong with wearing a suit. It shows respect and makes you look professional.

I assure you that when I travel for business, I am treated very differently by the airline, the waitstaff in the airport bar/restaurant, the rental car folks, etc. than I am if I am casual.

Chicken Ranch is right. When the rest of the world dresses down, folks in the service industry who have to dress professionally treat patrons better who dress likewise. Consciously or subconsciously, I've seen it occur way too much to be anecdotal.

They aren't treating those patrons better because "oh you have to wear a suit? so do I do!".

People in business suits get treated better by airline staff, waiters and rental car staff because there is the appearance/chance of a big business backing them. The thought enters their head "if I piss this guy off, I could be pissing off Bank of America or Exxon or some corporate client that has enough sway to really **** my job status".

In finance and suits are totally location dependant. I find anything DC and north you need a suit on the east coast. I guess I am a "client" in NYC. South of Mason Dixon you can get away with a sports coat out east. The further west the more casual. I had a head risk guy ($200B+ in assets) and he wore Mickey Mouse shirts every day, sandals and socks on casual days. He lived in SF.

According to the Allstate commercials mayhem wears a suit. You'd think it'd make it easier to spot mayhem coming, but that hasn't been my experience.

Mhayden, Your point is correct as well. I didn't mean it as "either/ or", moreso backing up ChickenRanch's point to the poster before me. I have a rack of very comfortable custom suits, some of which I feel need to be replaced. I lament the tough decision of whether or not I should do so. I ALWAYS get treated better/ receive more immediate and positive communication when I'm suited up. And if dressing down is simply an irreversible generational thing, I lament the sophistication and style elements the younger guys are giving up.

BTW, if your company had $200 Billion in assets tied up with a risk manager in SF, you made a client call and he greeted you wearing a Mickey Mouse shirt and sandals,..I would hope you'd have the instincts to be highly concerned.

No I'd only be concerned if he didn't perform.

Like most people, I don't give a rat's ass what someone wears. If one wants to get treated better by service people, be polite and courteous. That works 10X better than wearing a business suit.

I'm with a major defense contractor. Suits are the norm whenever we're visiting or hosting customers, exceptions being technical working meetings or field work.

Nope. Nothing looks better on a man than a nice tailored suit. And if you aren't a sweaty lolfat, it's as comfortable as anything else in your closit.

I work for a private family. Everyone in our office, from the CEO to the file clerks, wear suits and ties.

In the "old days", you had to put your coat on any time you left your office, even just to make copies. It's a bit more relaxed now, and we only wear them when we have meetings.

there is only one company I work with that makes everyone wear suits still. They think it is about perception, but the only thing I perceive is they don't pay their employees enough and everyone in the meeting went to the buy 1 get 5 free special at Jos A Bank together and bought same size regardless of build.

Family offices are still the #1 perp of this nowadays. Law firms have loosened up a bit (I'm talking big dogs like LockeLorde) as have some commercial banks.

Family offices have stayed true because those old farts with Scrooge McDuck piles of cash don't give a fk what anyone wants. It's their money and they make the rules.
