We have a couple of people on our office who literally SCREAM every time they sneeze. I know I can control how loud I sneeze - can't other people? Do they just not give a **** about people around them or are they looking for attention?

I don't understand why people say "in" on their own thread. I know you're in, you started the thread.

Sneezing is amazing and I will not hold back.

Have a staff member who I always say "never gets cheated on a sneeze." It's both annoying and funny. But no, I don't understand the lack of modulation in certain settings.

An open letter to all of you scream sneezers:

Why do you feel compelled to scream? Screaming has nothing to do with sneezing. If you were in a room with a sleeping baby, would you act like an inconsiderate dolt and wake up the baby so you could scream? If you were in a movie theatre/ symphony/ play/ church service and felt the urge during a quiet moment, would you restrain the urge to scream?

Yes? Ok, so now we've established that this is something you CAN control, you just sometimes choose not to. So that makes you inconsiderate.

In short:

screaming =/= sneezing

They are two separate, distinct functions, one voluntary the other involuntary.

Sneezes are a relatively violent expulsion of air so of course it will make noise. I think people are getting that confused with the people who outright yell the onomatopoeia when they sneeze.

I was never a loud sneezer. Then I had my eso****us repaired when I was 36 and since I sneeze extremely loud. If I try to quell the sneeze it hurts my throat. My family hates me when I sneeze in the car.

I cannot help but sneeze incredibly loud. It is not a bodily function I can control. That is all.

I don't scream, but I don't hold back at all. I gotta let that **** out!

I honestly can't help it. If I try to hold back it seriously hurts and can do major damage. I dislocated a vertabre once trying to not be so loud. Ive blown blood vessels in my eyes. I also use my mouth to divert 60-80% of the air coming out if my nose so I don't shoot a super sonic snot rocket out. If I go 100% nose I'll get a nose bleed because there is so much air coming out so fast. So why don't you just STFU, deal with 3 seconds of noise, and be glad you don't have the same issues.

I have allergies and a bad back. I'm not holding anything back.

Ironically, I find myself annoyed by the people that hold back sneezes. To me it's much more attention getting than just letting your body do what it needs to do. I also don't understand how it's possible if you truly needed to sneeze. As others have said, there's no holding back the force behind a sneeze without risking injury.

But SCREAMING vocally during a sneeze is not necessary. Ever..

I think it depends on the person. For guys, holding/quieting sneezes can be exceedingly painful; as if someone was trying to shove a fire extinguisher up your throat and out your nose kind of painful.

I do agree with the poster that said the "Ah" part should never be louder than the actual sneeze.
