Watch this:

Anyone catch what he says there at the end about why he shut it with a cable? He thought it even kind of looked like a threat? And he brought it to school anyway?

Anybody else notice the plug sitting next to it in the picture? Looks like his clock is all of about 3 or 4 inches wide.

So this "briefcase" is actually more like a pencil case.

I think I found the "briefcase" that this budding terrorist used to create his hoax bomb

In twelfth grade [Wozniak] built an electronic metronomeone of those tick-tick-tick devices that keep time in music classand realized it sounded like a bomb. So he took the labels off some big batteries, taped them together, and put it in a school locker; he rigged it to start ticking faster when the locker opened. Later that day he got called to the principal's office. He thought it was because he had won, yet again, the school's top math prize. Instead he was confronted by the police. The principal had been summoned when the device was found, bravely ran onto the football field clutching it to his chest, and pulled the wires off. Woz tried and failed to suppress his laughter. He actually got sent to the juvenile detention center, where he spent the night. It was a memorable experience. He taught the other prisoners how to disconnect the wires leading to the ceiling fans and connect them to the bars so people got shocked when touching them.

I mean, I get these things aren't really threatening. What I don't get is why the kid himself saw it as a threat and brought it anyway? Did you listen to the interview of him I posted?

Here's what I think happened:

First, let's take the kids words for it: It looked at least like a threat. He saw that as soon as he made it. So he purportedly modified it by removing the lock. How securing it with a cable versus a lock makes it look less like a threat I don't know. But there you are. The kid himself saw it and thought it looked like a threat.

Second, he brings it to school. How often he did this with other inventions is unclear. But he's an inventor. Assuming he invents all the time, wouldn't it be odd if the first thing he brought to school looked like a threat?

Third, the first teacher he showed it to told him not to show it to anyone else. It's probably reasonable to assume there was some conversation as to why. We don't know it. But again...we know the kid thought it looked like a threat. So maybe that came up? Yeah, I know it looks like a bomb...but I brought it in...

Fourth, he must somehow have plugged it in later after being told this, because it went off in another class. There's that plug everyone keeps talking about. Now why, after seeing himself it looks like a threat and being told not to show anyone, did he do that?

I think what happened is that everyone knew they were dealing with something that was not a bomb, but was intended to be a hoax. So they didn't treat it like a bomb. They treated it like a hoax. Guess what happens to bomb hoaxers? Bad things.

And that's fine. But I think then that's your point in the media. Not: Islamophobia.

This kid is on the one hand admitting it looked like a threat, ie, bomb. Admitting he brought it to school. Admitting he was told to keep it out of sight...And yet, left it on or plugged it in.

Then there was a reaction.

I think a white kid would get that reaction for this. I think painting this as a reaction someone had because of brown skin, when the kid himself admits it looked threatening is stupid.

Mostly this is continued PR opportunity for folks in the mainstream (obama, facebook doofus, etc.).

I honestly don't think Jacques knows the meaning of the word "intent"

Maybe the kid recognized there was a risk involved, possible. And maybe he also wrongly assumed that no rational person in their right mind would think there was an actual threat. Well I guess he learned his lesson, never underestimate the potent combination of paranoia, bigotry, and ignorance pervasive in Texas

He said he thought it looked like a threat.
he identified a low probability risk, took a mitigating action, and proceeded as planned.

If he intended to make it look like a threat he would not have taken the aforementioned mitigating action.

Where do you get the low probability stuff from? And how does putting s cable on it mitigate it?

1. Nobody in their right mind would look at it and think it was a bomb. Therefore the probability of somebody not being in their right mind, and consequently thinking it was a bomb, is a low probability risk. He incorrectly assessed that risk, because he's young and did not fully realize the extent to which islamophobia has permeated Texas.

2. Whether you or I perceive his mitigation plan to be valid is irrelevant. He perceived it to be valid, which shows a clear indicator that his intent was to make it clear to people that it was not a bomb, but was a clock he was very proud of. His mitigation plan may have been bad, but that's just bad planning and not malicious intent.

the definition of a "hoax" is a malicious deception.

He demonstrated no malice, and he took steps to do what he thought would make sure people weren't deceived by his device, including telling everybody that it was a clock.

Furthermore, when he showed it to his teacher and it was brought to his attention that he had not properly mitigated the risk he surrendered it for the teacher's protection, instead of then crying foul play or discrimination. He again demonstrated that he was not trying to deceive anybody.

Only after he did all of these things, and the device was no longer in his position, no longer capable of deceiving anybody, did the situation escalate out of his control.
