Second-Third Period Thoughts (opposing fan's perspective):
Ouch; a tough and frustrating result for the Devils tonight.
After a strong two minute shift early in the second period when the Stars kept the Devils penned in their own end, I can't complain too much about how the Devils played after that, especially during the four minute penalty kill in the middle of the second, and in the third the Devils created about as many chances as you could hope for against a good defensive team, without sacrificing
too much when pinching their D.

If there was one play that encapsulated the game to me (and what frustrates me about the Devils) it was Duchene's goal in the third, scored on the shift following the Devils' first goal, and not just because of the timing.
While it wasn't "spectacular," it was just a good solid snipe from the slot, taken quickly off the feed from Benn before Allen could properly square up to it. It was the kind of shot in tight games that you need to win in the playoffs... and the kind of shot you'd expect from a dependable veteran scorer like Duchene.
The Devils, on the other hand, went 0-fer on somewhat comparable shots from the slot tonight; including attempts from Hughes, Mercer, and a few from Hamilton (off the top of my mind) either dying in DeSmith's pads, going wide of the net, or smashing right into bodies on the way there. To be fair, the Stars caused some of those missed shots by being in good position; they must have blocked at least 25 shots tonight.
Nevertheless, while Hughes' one-timers in the third are fun goals to score and make for nice highlights, we'd be a better team if we scored more goals (and timely goals at that) like the Benn-Duchene connection in the third. Our best players, are, IMO, better at creating their chances than at taking them. While I'm pretty sure the Devils will make the playoffs this season, my fear is that tonight's game is what our playoffs are going to look like.

Anyway, thanks for letting me hang out in your thread, and good luck the rest of the way (except for the Devils-Stars game in Dallas next month).
